Case Study: A look at General Motors
• With a partner, read pages 296-97 (GM Canada case study) and
answer the following questions:
• 1. How has the automotive industry affected economics and
unemployment in Canada?
• 2. How does GM use the business practice of outsourcing?
• 3. How has this altered employment patterns in both developed
and developing countries?
• 4. How do multinational corporations like GM drive globalization?
Investigate the Disappearing Canadian
Manufacturing Sector
• Each group will investigate one of the following companies:
• Heinz in Leamington, ON,
• Kellogg in London, ON,
• Navistar in Chatham, ON,
• Caterpillar in London, ON,
• Ford in Oakville, ON.
• Search online to find out:
• Where did the company move its jobs?
• What are the advantages/disadvantages?
• What additional questions did you explore?
• Find evidence to report back to the class.
Reflective Journal/Time capsule
• Now that you have seen different aspects of globalization (e.g.
multinational corporations, Shipbreaking, trade in hbp, effect on
Canadian manufacturing, theoretical perspectives, etc.) write a journal
critically analyzing what you have learned and connecting it to your own
life.
• How has learning about globalization changed the way you see the
world?
• How do you think globalization will affect you, your family and Canadian
society in the future?
(I will photocopy these and give them back to you tomorrow.)
