Case Study: A look at General Motors • With a partner, read pages 296-97 (GM Canada case study) and answer the following questions: • 1. How has the automotive industry affected economics and unemployment in Canada? • 2. How does GM use the business practice of outsourcing? • 3. How has this altered employment patterns in both developed and developing countries? • 4. How do multinational corporations like GM drive globalization? Investigate the Disappearing Canadian Manufacturing Sector • Each group will investigate one of the following companies: • Heinz in Leamington, ON, • Kellogg in London, ON, • Navistar in Chatham, ON, • Caterpillar in London, ON, • Ford in Oakville, ON. • Search online to find out: • Where did the company move its jobs? • What are the advantages/disadvantages? • What additional questions did you explore? • Find evidence to report back to the class. Reflective Journal/Time capsule • Now that you have seen different aspects of globalization (e.g. multinational corporations, Shipbreaking, trade in hbp, effect on Canadian manufacturing, theoretical perspectives, etc.) write a journal critically analyzing what you have learned and connecting it to your own life. • How has learning about globalization changed the way you see the world? • How do you think globalization will affect you, your family and Canadian society in the future? (I will photocopy these and give them back to you tomorrow.)
