The Tappahannock Commission reports that that Tappahannock Presbyterian Church was
chartered on Sunday, October 14, 2012, at the Tappahannock Seventh Day Adventist
Church. The service went well and the church is officially chartered. Having
accomplished the chartering, the Commission requests the Presbytery to dissolve it as

ST. GILES ADMINISTRATIVE COMMISSION
The St. Giles Administrative Commission met with the Session in mid-December. We
reviewed together where we are at in the dismissal process and the steps needing to occur
if they desire to continue forward in the process. It was agreed to hold a congregational
meeting on January 27th for the purpose of conducting a straw poll to determine whether
the congregation desires to continue in the process of seeking dismissal. The Session will
present its position and the Administrative Commission will present the positions of the
PCUSA before the straw poll vote is taken. The Administrative Commission continues
its work of reviewing membership records, financial records and other details needed to
begin crafting a settlement agreement to be approved by the congregation and the
Presbytery.

CHRIST CHURCH ADMINISTRATIVE COMMISSION
The Administrative Commission [AC] for Christ Presbyterian Church [CPC] continues
working with the CPC session on the several considerations and issues that are needed to
continue the dismissal request. The first congregational meeting for a “straw vote” re:
dismissal to a specific denomination is scheduled for mid-February and the AC and
Stated Clerk will be attending and participating. The AC continues its efforts at due
diligence as our journey with the CPC session and members continues.
F.
SPOTSYLVANIA ADMINISTRATIVE COMMISSION
The Spotsylvania Administrative Commission is currently in the process of certifying the
membership records of the Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church in preparation for a
congregational meeting scheduled on Sunday, March 10. The Administrative
Commission is also preparing information for an Educational Event to be held on
Wednesday, February 27. The purpose of the Educational Event is to present the position
of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to the congregation of the Spotsylvania Presbyterian
Church. The focus of the work of the Spotsylvania Administrative Commission at this
phase of the dismissal process is to determine if there is a viable congregation and
continue with the dismissal guidelines.
G.
THIRD CHURCH ADMINISTRATIVE COMMISSION
The Administrative Commission working with Third Presbyterian Church’s request to be
dismissed from the PC(USA) met with the congregation in September 2012 at which the
congregation voted to leave the PC(USA). In the intervening months, the AC has met
with Third’s Dismissal Committee which is authorized by the session to work on the
terms of dismissal with the AC. The six pastors and the congregation have been received
by the Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (ECO) pending dismissal from the
PC(USA). An appraisal of the property is currently being done.
V.

Mission and Service Team
The Mission and Service Team and the Purpose Groups placed in our care—Disaster Response
Team, Eastminster, First Things First, Friends of Forman College, Haiti, Hunger, New Church
Development, Piedmont Mission, Presbyterian Women, Public Policy, and World Mission are
excited about the arrival of 2013 and its potential for new missions and new venues of service.
We want you to be excited too, especially about a couple of milestone events. First, the
permanent missionary to Haiti sponsored by the POJ is closer to fruition. Each individual
congregation will be asked to help us finish this effort. If you’ve heard a call to get involved in
this ministry please contact the Haiti or World Mission Purpose Group.
The Mission and Service Team’s intent is to work to make it possible for individual
congregations to have the option to pool and share their efforts and resources for optimum
effect—which is getting more of our people involved in the work before us. Imagine the
possibilities of having the capability to connect to a network of sister congregations and find
perfectly good, but idle, CE curriculum that you can borrow instead of purchasing … imagine
being able to respond to your congregation’s needs beyond your budget without busting your
budget … imagine having access to a proven resource collective consisting of inter- and intrachurch activities—opportunities for mission for every aspect of our multi-generational
congregations ... imagine being able to call upon a corps of theologians, lay-theologians, and inhouse Biblical subject matter experts that are chomping at the bit to share their skill and
knowledge as on-demand speakers and class facilitators … and that is just a glimpse at the
potential of a networked POJ … I believe, together we can create a tide that will float all
congregational-boats.
Your sessions will soon receive a letter from THE MAST inviting you to participate in this grand
experiment by providing a primary point of contact.
This year marks a new opportunity to become an intimate part of the mission work Christ
commissioned all of his followers to do.

Uniting for Mission in Haiti
After the devastating earthquake in Haiti, a group in this presbytery met to explore how the
presbytery could respond. A bold new venture emerged. The Presbytery of the James would
make possible the position for a new mission co-worker who would serve in Haiti, one of the
most impoverished countries in the Western Hemisphere. Those from the presbytery who went to

We rejoice that God calls all of us to faithfulness and devotion following Jesus.
We rejoice that God bestows gifts and calls some to particular ministries of service, justice,
and transformation.
We give thanks for Cindy Corell and for our partnership with her in ministry.
We celebrate our connectional church and the ties that bind us to serve together.
In an exciting initiative, the Presbytery of the James is joining with Presbyterian World Mission
to create and fund a new position in Haiti. This position, a Joining Hands Facilitator, will work
directly with our brothers and sisters in Haiti, and will be filled by Cindy Corell. Around the
world, Joining Hands networks strive to alleviate suffering through community education,
advocacy, and alternative economic initiatives, undergirding these efforts with deep spiritual
grounding as a witness to Jesus Christ. Cindy will also work with churches here to provide
opportunities and connections for us. She is available to speak during February, March, and part
of April.
This new venture provides a common mission for the Presbytery of the James as we unite in
supporting Cindy and her work in Haiti. An initial grant from the Office Park funds provides half
of the cost of Cindy’s initial three years, but we in the presbytery need to provide the other half
or $124,500. It is a big challenge!
The support of churches and individuals is vital. There are many ways to support Cindy’s work.
Add the support of Cindy Corell as a mission co-worker (E200482) to your mission budget.
Target undesignated mission money for her salary support. Take a special offering at a
designated time of year (e.g. Christmas Eve, a Sunday closest to the January earthquake, a
witness season offering in February or March), or take an offering every 5th Sunday. Become
more informed on Haiti and Cindy’s work. Commit to pray for Cindy and to read her monthly
mission letters. It will take all of us, but together we can make a difference in Haiti and in the
Presbytery of the James with a mission that unites us.

gave the retreat experience an overall average of 1.3.
The purpose group reviewed the evaluations in detail and discussed changes that would enhance
future retreat experiences. The group made initial plans for the 2013 retreat. In addition to
considering the application of Christian principles to daily life, participants enjoy the opportunity
to share personal faith journeys. Another topic to be considered for the 2013 retreat will be the
positive and negative factors that should be considered when living in a communal retirement
setting.
The purpose group extends its appreciation to the keynote presenter, The Rev. W. Ray Inscoe
and other presenters including The Rev. Gordon Lindsey and his wife Virginia, the Rev. Tom
Waltz and the Rev. Cheryl Sumner.
On the western side of the Presbytery, Pat Valentine reports that the POJ-Shenandoah Older
Adult Conference Committee is actively meeting and is looking ahead to a 2013 spring
conference at Massanetta Springs following successful conferences in 2011 and 2012.
The CAPS purpose group originally began as District One in the POJ. Now twenty years later, it
still meets to learn, pray, and encourage one another in various areas of the life of the church,
including worship, missions, and education. To support this endeavor, CAPS meets monthly at

Special Saturday gathering with Martha Moore-Keish
Associate Professor of Theology
Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA
“Living Faithfully in a World of Religious Pluralism”
Christians live today in a world that is increasingly marked by religious pluralism. In this special
Saturday gathering of CAPS, we explored the ways that Christianity has addressed this question
in the past, and explore some new ways that Christians are trying to answer this question today.
November 21, 12:30-2:00
Lunch with David Forney
“A Calm in the Tempest: Developing Resilience in Religious Leaders”
In this November luncheon, we gathered to talk about the current research in resilience–
particularly the asset-adversity model–as it applies it to the practice of religious leadership. We
talked about some of the acute adversities clergy face today and then considered four assets that
have been found to promote resilience. The intention of this work is to
increase the level of resilience in clergy so that they can be more imaginative, creative, and
energetic about their call to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
On October 31, 2012 graduates of the POJ Small Church Summer Intern Program led chapel at
Union Presbyterian Seminary. Each student shared a brief scripture reading and reflection that
lifted up some aspect of small church ministry that had been important to them in their summer
On experience. The liturgy was designed with the small church in mind, from hymn selection to
the Children’s Message. Also included was A Litany on Small Church Ministry written by Lisa
Salita which is printed below.

A Litany on Small Church Ministry (Lisa Salita)
There are many kinds of small churches: those in sparsely populated or rural areas, churches in
urban neighborhoods that have changed over the years, churches that have always been small,
churches that were bigger a generation ago, and new churches.
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but
the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of
them in everyone.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-6)
There are small churches that need revitalization and encouragement and help in finding a new
vision, and there are small churches that know who they are, who they serve, and who they are
called to be.
“I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to
completion by the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)
For many small churches, finances are very limited. It’s a struggle. But with purpose,
imagination, and the power and direction of the Holy Spirit, a small congregation can do great
things.
“For to his end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is
the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.” (1 Timothy 4:10)
The small church is like a family—joys, concerns, illnesses, and needs are known and tended to.
Members know and take care of each other. Meals are delivered, and garden harvest are shared.
“Love one another with mutual affection. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere
in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints. Live in harmony with one another. (Romans
12:10, 13, 14, 16)
The pastor of a small church wears many hats—preacher, pastor, teacher, typist, plumber. The
tasks are many and varied, but the calling is a gift for one who appreciates the church’s unique
identity with its strengths and weaknesses, and who finds ‘this is truly my home, these people are
my family.’ For those who have been called to ministry in small churches, and for those who
may be discerning a call—

I’m “Chaz” Blasdell (pronounced Blaze.. like the Holy Spirit) I am a Spirit led pastor with a
burning desire to bring Christ to all people with joy, enthusiasm, and energy. My drive is to
reach out to the younger generations and families who desperately need God’s love brought to
them in their lives and context. I am seeking a congregation with an emphasis and desire for
spiritual growth, outreach to the unchurched, and local missions. My strongest gifts are in
preaching with enthusiasm, dynamic worship, and educational experiences for all ages. I

accomplish this through the use of multi-media resources, gifted and dedicated volunteers, and a
mind that constantly seeks new and creative ways to communicate Christ’s love.
I live and serve by Paul’s charge to the Galatians - “You were called to freedom brothers, only
do not use that freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but to serve one another in love. For the
whole law can be summed up in one statement, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Gal.5:13–14)
I long for a family of faith with whom I can continue my own spiritual growth, seek God’s
will for humankind, and work with other inspired believers to bring God’s kingdom to earth.

Please describe your present call and accomplishments:
 I have served God alongside men & women from diverse faith backgrounds & experiences.
 I most recently served two yoked churches in declining rural communities that are struggling
with shrinking memberships and budgets.
 I aggressively sought to guide these churches through strong personal involvement in the
greater community, creating a worship atmosphere inviting to the next generation while
making the older members still feel vitally involved, and initiating a website.
 I have worked with and administered very large groups, managing support staff and the
recruitment & training of volunteer Lay Leaders.
 I’ve preached up to 4 times a day; while providing strong Biblical education for all ages on
topics like spirituality, marriage & family, stress, anger, and suicide.
 My ministry has provided me with numerous opportunities to evangelize the unchurched.
 There is a huge place in my heart for youth and families, with whom I first felt God’s call on
my life.
 In my diverse experiences I’ve counseled on issues from extreme personal crisis to
depression & loss
 I have managed large institutional budgets, as well as tackled the challenges of limited
resources.
 I develop relationships quickly, and I am ecumenical in fostering unity among churches.
I believe God is calling me to use my gifts to enrich worship, creatively expand & deepen
spiritual development & religious education, and shepherd His people to new levels of faith in a
world desperately seeking guidance.

I do not work alone, but serve Christ as part of His body of faithful servants. I would describe
myself as an empowerer, one who prefers a participative team style of leadership in which I
guide and teach others to use their gifts and take on leadership roles. I see myself as a spiritual
guide and resource working within a family with whom I share ministry. The most effective
leader strives to bring out the best of the talents and gifts of those with whom they work. One
then bases decisions on the input of the body. Each member of the body should feel that they are
personally responsible for the direction the ministry takes, thus they will feel they are a valuable
and needed asset, and will work all the harder to serve their church and community.
What are the key theological issues currently facing the church and society, and how do
they shape your ministry?

This requires Christians to demonstrate holiness in their own lives, based firmly on Biblical

For this reason I strive to teach others how to live and exemplify Christ-centered lives.
The churches greatest challenge is to make worship and faith RELEVANT to those who need
it most while preserving our traditions. At this we must not fail!
Toward this end, I constantly explore new and creative ways to bring the presence of God into
people’s lives, and reconnect them to the Biblical foundations of faith.
One of the direst problems facing society is the decline in the family. Our society is fast
becoming one in which family and religious values are neglected. The church, as the family of
God, must instill a renewed dedication to the family and Christian family values. I work to
insure that churches offer not only strong Christian Education and youth programs, but also
provide resources and support for parents to foster a spiritual environment in their homes.

STATEMENT OF PERSONAL FAITH
I believe in the one Lord and God who expresses Himself in the Holy Trinity. God is the
creator and sustainer of creation who makes us in His own image. Jesus Christ is God’s ultimate
self expression incarnate in human form; fully God and fully man, a gift unto creation that we
might know Him and be reconciled to Him through the His sacrifice on the cross. The Holy
Spirit is the expression of God’s transforming and unifying power who transforms our hearts
and minds, guides us in God’s will, and unites our souls to God just as He unites God as Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit.
God reveals Himself to creation through the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible. The
Bible is the infallible Word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit, given to humanity that we might
know His will for our lives. The New Testament contains God’s special revelation of Himself in
the person, teachings, and sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ.
The fallen nature of human selfishness, covetousness, and greed have separated us from the
paradise of physical and spiritual communion with God. It is only through the reconciling
sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit and not the efforts of
human works that God reconciles us to Himself. To this end God established and ordained the
Holy Sacraments of Baptism and The Lord’s Supper.
In Baptism, through the symbolism of the sprinkling of water, we receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit who washes away our sin and sanctifies us in the sight of God.
Through the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, we present ourselves to God, and proclaim is
gift of salvation to the world. Though the symbolism of the bread and cup, we bind our
brokenness to Christ’s broken body and resurrection, and accept our role as disciples in the new
covenant in His blood.
We are the body of Christ; the church. We come together as a community rooted in both the
Scriptures and the tradition of the confessions while constantly seeking to reform ourselves in the
image of God. Through Divine worship, Christian education and service, we proclaim the grace
of God to the world, support one another in righteousness, and work together through the Holy
Spirit toward the reconciliation of the world to God.

The past 5 years have taught me there is no perfect church or organization; yet, a church
that knows this about themselves excites me because it knows that it has room to grow and seek
ways to be more faithful. This church I seek is open and welcoming to all people. This church
does not shy away from difficult issues or challenges. This church is not afraid to take risks.
This church is never satisfied with its ministry. This church has a desire to be hands and feet of
Jesus Christ to the poor, the lowly, the neglected, and the faithless regardless of how imperfect
they may be. This church is excited about evangelism and church growth.
As a former youth minister, I always considered youth ministry being like a smaller
version of a church. Every area of ministry is contained in youth ministry. So I feel I have some
experience in all aspects of pastoral ministry—although I know there is always room for personal
growth. I’ve learned to minister through people, not programs. I have participated and lead in
ministry where resources have been extremely limited or non-existent. This has led me to lean
on faith, creativity, and on the gifts and skills of others to move the ministry forward. I would
say teaching is my strongest pastoral gift. I love to teach and love the holy moments that come
with teaching. I also believe that my pastoral leadership should reflect openness and diversity so
that no voices (even voices that I disagree with) are silenced.
Being a camp director, I believe I have a wider understanding of how business works,
and the particular struggles that non-profit organizations face. I’ve also learned much about
managing staff, marketing, customer service, and relationship building with supporting
organizations; all of which I think can translate into helpful gifts for church service that I didn’t
necessarily have in my previous call.
Please describe your present call and accomplishments:
I came to camp ministry because it’s an area of ministry that needs to be supported and
grow in our denomination. My call to ministry came from multiple impressionable experiences
in camp ministry. I came to this ministry because I felt I could bring new energy and change the
minds within the presbytery that have been skeptical about camp ministry because of the
financial costs and previous history of camping in this presbytery. As I began my work, I saw the
need for some common sense business practices and creating long term plans for sustainability.
With the pulpit supply I have done and the tone I have set about how camp ought to be in other
Presbytery events, I have felt that congregations are beginning to take notice again to this
important ministry. We were attracting new groups to camp, and building new excitement to the
summer camps. We certainly have had to learn to do more with less and find ways to use what
we do have to our advantage. We were seeing good steps taken, but we knew that time was not
on our side. Unfortunately, the camp’s financial situation was fully revealed to me only after my
first six months on the job. I am now seeking a new call because this wonderful camp will not
be able to sustain itself without the revenue streams it has relied upon since its inception.
Though my time here at camp has been short, I also reflect and give thanks for the
ministry I led in my previous call as an associate pastor for youth where I served for a month less
than four years and what we accomplished:
Organizing and hosting a Presbytery-wide youth worship service. No other church in the
presbytery had ever taken on an event like this. We were able to bring in over 300 youth over a

150-mile radius, pulling together recreation, worship, youth leadership, and the organization of

Completing the YMLI Certificate Program. I had finished my M.Div. already and many
colleagues and seminary professors thought I was wasting my time. (I disagree!)
Writing curriculum for the denomination and being part of the leadership team for Pathways was
an honor and a privilege.
Teaching Confirmation and reinventing our church’s approach to it.
Creating diverse ministry experiences with little to no budget. (This along with the camp issues
is the closest I’ve felt to being one of the Twelve – being sent out with absolutely nothing.)
Stepping up in a larger pastoral role for our congregation and staff when our Head of Staff
abruptly resigned due to controversial accusations about him.
Set up an outreach ministry to middle school students that opened right across the street from the
church less than a year before I departed.
Being involved in the lives of youth and their families in joyful and holy ways.
Being recognized as someone’s pastor is a humbling and daunting role to play. Whatever
accomplishments I’ve had is due to being in this call and seeing how it has shaped me into being
a better pastor.
On a personal side, feeling called by God to preside at my father’s memorial. I was grateful to
God for giving me the strength and ability.
Please describe your leadership style:
My goal as a leader is primarily to be faithful to Jesus Christ–doing all I can to ensure
that we look to Christ for wisdom, guidance, and His leadership as we serve. How I do that
starts with how I carry myself as a pastor. I believe one’s character and integrity are keys to any
leadership style. I’ve had experience in taking the lead, working collaboratively with a group,
and empowering others to lead. All three styles are important and necessary for ministry in the
church, yet no one style ought to dominate. I am confident I can lead any of these ways when
appropriate. Also, being an associate pastor, I know how to be supportive and to complement
the leadership of the head of staff and other colleagues in ministry.
Years ago, back in my pastoral internship, I was having lunch with a church member who
happened to be a pastoral counselor. (I mention his profession because I was confident he knew
what he is talking about.) He said to me, “Jeremy, what I love about you most is that when you
enter a room you command respect.” I wasn’t sure what he meant at first, but the more I
reflected on it I believe he was saying that when I lead, I have the ability to set the right tone for
how things will go from there. I believe he meant that my leadership commands respect not just
for myself, but for all I am called to lead. I hope he meant my character and integrity reflected
confidence, comfort, enthusiasm, and trust when I lead. I have never forgotten his words and I
have always tried to carry them with me as I lead in ministry.
What are the key theological issues currently facing the church and society, and how do
they shape your ministry?
Idolatry. Our culture is full things and people that want to take the place of our God. We
struggle with what to value most and where our time, energy, and resources are devoted. Many

seek a God that serves “me” first and God that must fit around “my” schedule. However, the
Christian’s call requires us to make the Triune God the one and only God. To lean on and place
our complete trust in Jesus Christ is the only way we can truly live as God intended.
Importance of the Church. Our society and younger generations are seeing the Church as little to
no value in growing a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Being “church” is deeply
theological because it connects us to Christ himself and through Holy Spirit we are driven to
service. The Church is the closest we come to the kingdom of God here on Earth, even though
it’s full of sinners and it often makes mistakes. Many have forgotten that Christ left us the
Church until He returns; therefore, we must continue to show forth the necessity of the Church
and show its relevance and impact in this world for generations to come.
Embracing the movement of the Spirit in the life of the Church as we face difficult issues. Being
Presbyterian means that no one but Christ makes the decision for the direction of the Church.
Our call as Presbyterians is to gather together in community and in Christ’s name to discern the
will of God. Our denomination is feeling the effects of congregations and individuals who don’t
agree with how we are led by Christ as a denomination. We must remember that whatever
direction our denomination goes in dealing with difficult issues that we are always guided by the
Holy Spirit. Many lack the confidence and trust in the way we discern the movement of the
Spirit yet we all must seek to be more embracing of the Spirit’s movement in the direction and
shape of our denomination.
I see these three issues as being some of the most prevalent issues that will shape my
ministry because they affect the Church as a whole. They impact our present and our future.
They impact every age. They impact the individual believer and the community of believers.
They impact how we minister to the world in need. No one is immune from these issues, not
even the pastor. They impact us all because everywhere we go idolatry, the Church, and the
embracing of Holy Spirit will be at the forefront in our movement towards faithfulness.
Statement of Faith
I believe in the Triune God, and out of love, created all that was, is, and will be. I believe
this God not only creates but also continually cares for and nurtures all that is created and made a
covenant to always be our God. In God’s creation, God created human beings in God’s image. A
creation unlike any other, set apart for a unique relationship between the created and the Creator.
This relationship called for human beings to walk in God’s light and live as God ordains to love
and care for all that God has created and to worship and enjoy God forever. However, human
beings missed the mark of this special relationship and turned away from their Creator through
what we call sin and has trapped us, incapable us to redeem ourselves. Yet God did not give up
on us. Out of love, the Triune God became “God with us.”
As God revealed to me through the Scriptures, I believe Jesus Christ is God Incarnate.
The son of God who is human, just like me, yet fully divine being God. This is the same one of
whom the prophets spoke would come to save the world from their sin. Jesus preached the good
news of God and of our salvation through Him. Through His proclamation and actions uprooted
claims and actions of the religious elite and showed that God is a God of all people, not simply
the righteous and higher classed. Jesus taught our God surpasses our understandings and through
love, grace, justice, and mercy rules the universe and can redeem this broken creation only
though God’s Son. Because of this proclamation and the way He lived His life, Jesus was
unjustly sent to die. Jesus was beaten, mocked and was crucified, yet he was without blame and

without sin. So Jesus met the cross, not for himself, but for the sins of all humankind. Jesus died,
so that God’s broken people might live—so that a creation may be saved and redeemed. Then,
something amazing happened. Jesus rose from the dead. HE IS RISEN! And through this
resurrection I come to believe and acknowledge that I cannot save myself, but that I do have a
God who will go to any length, even death on a cross, for me and those whom God has chosen.
Through Jesus, God kept his covenant with us—a gift of grace, that which will never be earned
or merited, but freely given out of God’s love for us.
I believe God is Holy Spirit. God’s Spirit is that which moves in our midst and has being
in our midst, even as Christ has ascended to the Father. Holy Spirit guides God’s people to fulfill
God’s purposes, draws us to repentance and obedience, enlightens us to hear and respond to
God’s Word. The Spirit inspired the writings of Scripture so that we can trust them as God’s true
Word for the world. Through Holy Spirit, God calls us to be the Church. The Church, led by
Jesus Christ, brings God’s people together to proclaim the Word and be the extension of God’s
grace by continuing the ministry of Jesus. Through the Church, signs and gifts of grace are
extended God’s people: baptism, where God’s people are incorporated into the Church and set
apart for a life before God and the Lord’s Table, where God’s people are reminded of Christ’s
saving death and through bread and wine are extended gifts of grace again and again to show
God’s covenant shall never be broken. The Church carries forth the Gospel to the world, being
an extension of God’s covenant, loving, caring, and serving the world with the hopeful promise
of Christ’s return, and again He shall come! We are called to lives worshipfully through all that
we do, through all that we say, and through all that we are, pointing to Jesus Christ, worshiping
with gratitude and thanksgiving to the one who gives us life, life eternal, life with God, forever.
Thanks be to God.

Chosen as a Member of the Pastor-Theologian Study Group for the PCUSA Office of Theology
and Worship, 2000 – 2002, discussing Issues Facing the PCUSA.
Staff Member, General Assembly Meeting Arrangements, 1985 – 1993, serving as a volunteer
and Assembly Assistant during the tenure of Dr. James Andrews as Stated Clerk of the PCUSA,
working each assembly, as well as time during the year in helping the GA Office Staff with
planning and on site visits.
General Assembly Committee Assistant, 1994, for the GA Standing Committee on Evangelism.
Church Characteristics Desired:
Called by grace, I seek to continue my service as Senior Minister of a local congregation, living
out my calling and vocation as a Minister of Word and Sacrament. I desire to serve where
Worship is the focus of church life, modeling the Catechism’s call to worship God and enjoy
Him forever. I want to teach our theological and intellectual traditions to relate & integrate faith
in our hearts and heads; a church where the mental, emotional, social, and cultural realities of the
21st century are taken seriously. I desire a partnership with folks that like a sense of humor,
Biblical preaching & teaching, common sense & theological acumen, and plain, good old
Southern hospitality, compassion, and friendship. I seek a place where we can live out our faith
with passion together.
I want to combine the talents from my wide experience as Consultant, Professor, Senior
Minister, and Interim in the life of a congregation. My unique depth, breadth, and length of
experience enable me to lead worship, care for people, and partner with any size or type
congregation in its ministry, as a colleague and friend in faith in Jesus Christ.
I hope to live out Ephesians 4:12, preparing the saints for ministry to build up the Body of Christ,
nurturing a lay-led church, where the pastor is a partner and stakeholder, not the center of the life
of the church or its ministry. I do not want to be worshipped or put on a pedestal, but be a partner
and participant with those in the community of faith.
Accomplishments in present call:
I have focused on working with the Session, leaders, and members of the congregations served to
help them to reclaim their self-image, do honest self-assessment, and form a positive identity as a
faithful, vibrant church. These partnerships in ministry led to growth and stability in the varied
congregations served.
*I urged the congregations and staff members to move forward, and led the church to be
mission-driven, lay-led, and renewal-focused
*facilitated Sessions to claim their role and responsibilities in our Presbyterian system, educating
both Deacons and Elders through a process of Officer Training
*taught and nurtured both staff and members to communicate better, with clarity, candor, and
honesty, about the issues faced in their common life, fostering a more collegial environment,
focused on what God was calling the church to do in the future
*developed and implemented enlarged, focused Stewardship and Capital campaigns, which
raised more pledges and actual dollars than in past years, paying off a building debt of $600K in
2nd PC and paid of a $270K Building Debt while the interim at FPCJC

Leadership Style:
I am a coach. I lead by the team concept. I encourage, question, delegate, motivate, recruit,
evaluate, and inspire as all work and are strengthened. I am a Teaching Elder. I see all as
colleagues/partners in ministry. I build networks, linking us together in the process of
discernment and ministry, adapting to the realities of our fast-paced world of change.
I covet times of shared success, rejoicing in the gifts all have to offer. I want peers who lead by
example and excellence. Having talented, committed people and allowing them to do their best is
real stewardship.
Relationships grow by dialogue, debate, conflict, love, and empathy as we work and play
together. Humor is crucial; work can be fun and enjoyed! We gather for times of planning,
analysis, and scheduling based in personal relationships, laughter shared, Scripture studied, and
prayers offered. I affirm all staff, whether custodian, day care teacher, or DCE. Each is vital to
ministry, deserving respect and affirmation, for all are members of the priesthood of believers.
So are all elders, deacons, and members as we work together in Christ’s name!
I seek input from colleagues in decisions; collegial, but not afraid to lead and make decisions. I
moderate the Session as a partner in ministry with my peers. I am willing to take a stand on
issues of faith, practice, and polity when the need arises. In all aspects of ministry, honesty,
integrity, and prayer guide me for the sake of the Gospel.
Key Theological Issues:
We live in a post-9/11 world, terrorism and fear are ever before us, war is ongoing, economic
challenges overwhelming, and many have lost hope. This is a challenge for preaching, teaching,
and sharing the Gospel we have never faced. In an era of increasing technology/media and
immediate gratification, how can we maintain the integrity of the 2000 year old Gospel
message, one always relevant, yet speak in a manner that is culturally, intellectually, and
morally relevant so that people can hear and understand the Gospel message with clarity?
This is the key theological issue in the Church today.
Our context and witness must be informed by the media available for use, the wisdom of our
tradition, and the realities of the historic Biblical witness, speaking the truth in love, from within
the framework of our faith and the Reformed tradition without apology, while speaking with
humility, grace, and compassion.
I believe we have a sentinel task and commitment in the PCUSA to work to reclaim the civility
and honor that should be maintained in public and private discourse about significant issues
facing us in the church and the world. In congregations, governing bodies, blogs, and other
media, the tenor and tone of our language used in speaking with one another does not reflect the
proper respect and dignity that is seen in our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray we can work together to
end this trend and reclaim a new quality of grace and peace in our conversations with one
another.

The strength and vitality of my personal confession of faith rests in my claiming the historic
affirmations of the Church as found in its creeds and confessions. I am an heir to the apostolic
faith, the Reformed tradition, and the classic Presbyterian confessional heritage.
I believe in God the Father Almighty, the Maker of Heaven and earth. God is made known to us
in the three persons of the Trinity, as Father, as Son, and as Holy Spirit.
I believe in Jesus Christ, the Son conceived by God through the Holy Spirit. Jesus was born of
the Virgin Mary, lived, was crucified, died, and buried, descending into hell, death, and
destruction, suffering total separation from God on our behalf for the remission of our sins. On
the third day, God raised Jesus from the dead. The resurrection is a real event in time, space, and
history, not a tool of magic, myth, or metaphor. Jesus Christ is the Risen Lord, reigning in
power at the right hand of God; and, he shall come again to judge both the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who at Pentecost called forth the Church
in power to give witness to Jesus Christ; in the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church, which is
made visible by the witness of confessing Christians everywhere. The Church is called forth in
mission, giving witness to the grace, mercy, and love of God as seen in Jesus Christ.
I believe in justification by grace through faith alone, grounded in the Reformation and
Protestant traditions of Luther, Calvin, and so many others. I am a sinner saved not by my works,
worth, or deeds, but by the grace and love of God. I am a broken Presbyterian pastor, who
ministers to broken people, with broken dreams, in a broken church, in a broken denomination,
in a broken world, seeking to be touched, transformed, and taught by the Word of Truth and
Hope, knowing we are lost without the sovereign love and grace of God.
I believe and accept the Holy Scriptures as the only unique and authoritative witness to Jesus
Christ in the Church universal, God's Word to me personally as a Christian, and the Word of God
still speaking in and to the Church and the world. The Scriptures are our rule and guide in all
matters of the faith. By the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in and through human beings, the Old
and New Testaments were written, gathered, and exist today to tell the story of God's grace, love,
and our only hope. I believe Scripture is the Word of God, inspired in its original writing, still
inspired by the Holy Spirit in its reading, preaching, and hearing today, becoming the living,
breathing, Word of God anew for us today.
I believe, with John Calvin, that the Church exists where the Word is preached and heard, where
the Sacraments are rightly administered and received, and where Church discipline is properly
exercised as a means of mercy and grace. We are called to live in obedience to God, to exhibit
love of God and of neighbor, and to show Christ's gracious presence to the world by being the
body of Christ in unity and a visible witness of Christ to all humanity.
I believe Baptism is a sacrament signifying our entrance and engrafting into the body of Christ;
that regardless of its manner, mode, or one's age when it is administered, it is a rite of the church
that should be administered only once in a Christian's life. The Lord's Supper is a meal of grace
given to remind us of our Lord's constant provision for us and should not be eaten unworthily or
without preparation. Through the celebration of this feast, we continually proclaim the Lord's
death until he comes again. May God guide and strengthen us as we seek to honor our Lord and
the traditions of the faith given to the saints.

Church Characteristics Desired:
I am called to serve a congregation willing to take risks for God in order to be a dynamic and
authentic body of Christ. I seek a congregation that practices Christian hospitality, reaching out
and welcoming all to the family of God. Members seek to deepen their faith and take prayer
seriously. They sincerely care for each other, agree to disagree, laugh and celebrate together.
I have a gift and passion for proclaiming the Gospel. I weave biblical truths and daily life into
thought-provoking and uplifting messages that draw listeners closer to God and open them to the
Lord’s comfort, guidance, and call to serve. I have designed and led traditional and
contemporary worship services, as well as spiritual retreats.
Drawing on my experience as a university instructor, I encourage adults to deepen their faith and
knowledge through discussion, inquiry, and reflection. I taught courses that culminated in
designing special worship services.
I have served as administrator and consultant to non-profit and social service organizations. I am
adept in financial management and stewardship.
I bring unique gifts and experience to pastoral care and visitation ministry. I personally
experienced the challenge of care giving and the power of faith in the face of progressive
disability. Three years ago, my 59 year old husband died from complications of Alzheimer’s
disease. I tread lightly in personal lives for it is holy ground; a place where we experience God in
profound ways.
Accomplishments in present call:
I am currently serving as Pastor at Shadow Hills Presbyterian Church. (shadowhillschurch.com)
The Shadow Hills congregation is small but strong with about one hundred in worship on
Sundays. Shadow Hills members are creative, energetic, and committed to proclaiming the
Gospel through word and deed. During my tenure, two members have been ordained to pastoral
ministry and one is currently attending seminary. Two members are commissioned lay pastors.
Shadow Hills Presbyterian Church is the community church. The annual “Mission Possible”
weekend sends over one hundred servants into our community. We partner with the local United
Methodist Church, Bailey Center, providing food and clothing to our needy neighbors. Our
commissioned Community Liaison coordinates our involvement in a full range of community
events and neighborhood boards. We were awarded a Community Beautification Grant by the
City of Los Angeles, two First Five Development Grants from the State of California and
Mission Stimulus Funds from our synod. We host LAFD Community Emergency Response
Team trainings and are working to become a staging center in the event of a major earthquake or
wildfire. The annual “Blessing of the Animals” reinforces our equestrian community’s self
image as a little piece of country at the edge of the big city. The weekly “Pets Are Welcome
Service” (PAWS) offers an informal opportunity to praise God with our animal friends.

Leadership Style:
Congregational ministry is a communal activity. It is the people and events in the life of the
church that continually shape our vision and plans. Therefore I strive, through my preaching and
leadership development, to keep our focus on catching a glimpse of God’s dream for our
congregation. This is reinforced as our session and deacon meetings are conducted in a worship
format.
My strongest image of leadership is that of service. Guided by this image, my ministry tends to
be very relational. My leadership skills include active listening and prayerful discernment. I
devote considerable time and energy to train and support lay servant-leaders. My goal is that
these lay leaders will empower everyone – children, teens, adults, seniors, even shut-ins – to use
their unique gifts in Christ’s service.
I have been successful at drawing people into active ministry teams by articulating God’s call
and linking gifts and passion to the needs of the congregation, community, and world. I am
skilled at facilitating strategic planning and my contagious enthusiasm provides energy and
confidence that Christ’s mission can be realized through us.
One of my favorite expressions is “all ministry is an experiment.” Therefore, I encourage others
to attempt the extraordinary, acknowledging that ministry is fine-tuned over time and that God
empowers us to serve in ways we never imagined.
Key Theological Issues:
An important issue facing our church is how we can faithfully spread the Gospel in a fearful and
hurting world. In our postmodern society, many people see little value in church involvement.
Christians are sometimes viewed as judgmental and out of touch with contemporary issues.
Therefore, we are called to put a new face on the church of Jesus Christ; a face that is more
Christ-like, inclusive, and grace-filled. We are to confidently share the Gospel’s Good News in
traditional and innovative ways, as well as openly communicate how faith impacts our lives and
informs our views and actions.
We face the challenge to be relevant to our community by becoming more culturally and
ethnically sensitive and involved. We are presented with the opportunity to grapple with
maintaining the integrity of the Gospel while respecting a diversity of opinions and worldviews.
What’s more, as Christ’s peacemakers, we are called to build bridges between factions within
our churches and communities.
As the Body of Christ, it is essential that we act with compassion for justice. We are called to
speak out and work alongside those whose voices are often misunderstood or unheard. The
people of Antioch said of the early Christians, “See how they love each other.” May the people
today say of us, “See how they love each other … and the world.”
Statement Of Faith:
In life and in death, I belong, body and soul, to the one triune God, whom I worship and serve
and whom alone I confess and trust. I trust in God, the Holy One of Israel, Yahweh, who spoke
through the prophets; my creator, creator and sustainer of all that is seen and unseen,
God created all people equal and good to live in community; my sovereign, who calls me
through baptism to the covenant family ordered by the Word for salvation and service; my loving
parent, whom Jesus called “Abba”, “Father”, ordering life to God’s purpose, nurturing me in
times of joy and pain, challenging me to live to my full potential. And yet, I sin against God.
I claim mastery over my own life. I worship the created above the creator. With grace and mercy,

God forgives my weakness and sin. God’s love is ever faithful. I trust in Jesus Christ; fully
human, fully God; the Word of God made flesh as revealed through the Scripture. God sent Jesus
to act as my brother, my personal mediator to God so I too may call God, “Abba”, “Father”; my
teacher, inspiring me through words and deeds to proclaim the Good News, respect and care for
all of God’s people, strive for peace, justice, and freedom; my Lord, weaving the fragments of
my life into patterns of purpose, calling the church into being, uniting all believers in worship
and service; my Savior, who joins me in communion to remember his unjust condemnation by
humankind, crucifixion with full human suffering, and death for my sins and the sins of the
world. God raised this Jesus for the salvation of all God’s own. I trust in the Holy Spirit, who
justifies me by grace through faith; responds to spoken and unspoken prayer, renewing me with
fresh breath and insight, empowering me with guidance and strength, embracing me with love;
guides the revelation of salvation through the Scripture, awakening me to new dimensions of
faith; sanctifies the sacraments of baptism and communion, drawing me ever closer to my Lord;

Jesus.
