Post-Trip Documentation Introduction 1.1. Preamble Montaña de Luz (MdL), which is Spanish for Mountain of Light, is a non-profit organization in Honduras that houses children affected by HIV/AIDS. Many of the children are orphans, and Montaña de Luz is the only family they know. The Ohio State University began sending service teams to MdL in 2005 through a club called Engineers for Community Service. The program has been a major success, and their quality of life has continued to improve. This year, the Computer Team will be completely updating the technology in the lab including new tables, computers, and an a/c unit. The renovated computer lab will have the technology required to enhance the education for all children at MdL. 1.2. Background The preceding computer teams have made significant progress in improving the technology at MdL. In 2005, the first computer team helped turn the on-site morgue into a computer lab. In 2006, a concrete pad was installed to support a satellite dish, but the project was not implemented due to permit issues. In 2008, a smaller satellite that did not require a permit was installed. In 2011, the most recent computer team updated the Internet system and software, repaired hardware issues, and installed a protective storage cabinet. Ohio State University teams have consistently played an important role in maintaining the Internet communication technology at MdL. Our team plans to build from the work of previous teams and give the MdL kids access to the best technology possible. 3. Problem Statement The computer teams kept in contact with both Kristen Mallory, the in-country director, as well as James Bettis, a long term volunteer currently helping out at Montaña de Luz. After exchanging several emails, the team had a solid idea of the technical conflicts they are facing and how to go about solving them. 3.1 Heat Issue in Computer Lab The team has been informed the computer lab can get very hot at times. Room temperature is typically 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The computer lab could be estimated to be 82 degrees Fahrenheit on average and even greater during March, the hottest and driest month of the year. Besides being uncomfortable, this could also potentially cause damage to computer and electronic equipment. The 2011 Computer Team recommended installing a drop ceiling in the lab. 3.2 Hardware Most of the computers at MdL are getting old and need to be repaired or replaced. The three office computers for the director, administrator, and psychologist are outdated. There are six laptops and one desktop in the computer lab. Previously, there was only one printer in all of MdL, but they have recently received a donation of a laser printer. 3.3 Software The software currently installed on the computers at MdL is limited. The team has been informed that new educational software, parental control software, and Microsoft Office would be very useful. 3.4 Wireless Network The Internet service at MdL has been improved since 2011. There has been a more consistent connection but the speed has not improved. MdL is currently paying roughly $110 per month with the HughesNet E-Consulting Plan, receiving a symbol rate of 33 Msps and a speed of 54 Mbps (Betty J. Interview). 4|Page Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation 3.5 Data Storage Currently, the kids at MdL have no way to store their individual work. If they use different computers on different days, there is no way for them to save and continue their work. 3.6 Electric Grid The distribution feeder serving MdL fails occasionally. The power is unreliable and there are constantly outages due to reasons including but not limited to the distribution feeder. MdL needs to have access to electric power during these times. 4. Scope of Work/Objectives Prior to departure, the following objectives were developed to solve the issues that have been described in the problem statement above. 4.1 Heat Issue in Computer Lab The team will not have sufficient time or resources to install a drop ceiling in the lab but the idea will be recommended to future teams. To resolve the high temperature issue in the computer lab during the summer, a portable cooling unit will be installed. First, the team researched different types of cooling units and consulted the usage and power required with the instructors. The team decided to purchase a portable evaporative cooling unit because it uses less energy and is still effective within a small room like the computer lab. Preliminary testing will be conducted to make sure the proper usage and efficiency of the cooling unit. If preliminary tests results are satisfactory, the cooling unit can be installed upon the first day of arrival. In the case that the cooling unit does not meet our temperature requirements of decreasing the room temperature to below 74 degrees Fahrenheit or is not energy efficient, it will be returned and back-up plan of purchasing window air condition in Honduras will be considered. The computer lab is 22’8” long and 12’9” wide. The cooling unit is 9,000 BTU and should sufficiently lower the temperature in the room. 4.2 Hardware 4.2.1 Computers and Rearrangement The team has requested a donation of ten desktop computers from surplus equipment at The Ohio State University. Due to transportation complications, only eight of the computers will be brought down to Honduras. Three of them will be installed in the offices and five will be installed in the computer lab. The remaining two computers will be left with Dr. Merrill for future computer teams. A webcam will be installed on the administrator’s computer. 5|Page Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation The wires in the lab will also be rerouted to prevent dust. The team has designed the 3D view of the room before and after the rearrangement. Kids and staff at MdL will be involved in this project. In the case that the plastic tables are kept, the following arrangement will be used. Figure 1: Current Computer Lab Setup Figure 2: The Planned Computer Lab Setup after Renovation 4.2.2 Wooden Tables The team decided that it would also be a great idea to switch from using plastic tables to wooden tables, and is still considering this option. The teenagers living at MdL will be encouraged to assist in the building process. The tables were made of eight sheets of ¾” 2’ x 8’ plywood, sixteen 2” x 4” x 8’s and eight 2” x 2” x 8’s. The wooden tables were planned to encircle the room as shown in Figure 3 on the next page. The tables are designed to be durable and can encounter rough treatment. To address this issue, new software was installed on every desktop system. Due to the limited bandwidth at Montaña de Luz, the computer team downloaded or obtained all software here on campus. The team obtained a donation of ten copies of Windows 7 Ultimate from a member of last year’s computer team, eight of which will be installed on the surplus computers we are bringing, and two of which will be left in the cabinet for spares. Firefox was the Internet browser used on all computers due to its reliability and speed. Fox Filter, an extension for Firefox, was used on the lab computers to block children from inappropriate content on the Internet. RapidTyping, a free typing tutor, was installed on all computers to help to kids learn to type on the computers. Typing games within the program allow for enjoyable learning. Byki Express is a language-learning program that will be also be installed. It uses audio and visuals to teach kids the basics of English. Headphones will be supplied to use in conjunction with this program. Open Office is a great alternative to Microsoft Office and was installed on each computer. It contains an imitation of Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint, and runs very similar to these programs. Skype was installed on the administrator’s computer to use with the webcam. This will allow for easier communication between MdL staff and volunteer/service teams. A variety of educational games, including Big Brainz, Sebran, and Seterra. These games teach math, memory, ABC’s, geography, and more. The operating systems and software was installed on all donated computers prior to departure, and a USB drive containing software installation files was brought for existing computers at MdL. The team will teach the staff and the kids in MdL about the new software. 4.4 Wireless Network The team decided to install a switchbox and two new bridges that will essentially improve the connection. The Internet bandwidth will be assessed and a new plan and provider will be researched and recommended. 8|Page Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation Figure 5: Pre-Trip Wireless Internet Setup (Source: 2011 Computer Team) 4.5 Data Storage To help the kids keep track and store their data, the team will hand out flash drives ranging from 4-16 Gigabytes that have adequate storage for each kid and staff member. 4.6 Electric Grid Electricity has been a major issue in MdL. A weather station will be installed in order to gather wind speed data throughout the year. This will provide future teams with wind speed data that can be used to decide whether the installation of a wind turbine generator is a reasonable solution to an unreliable electric grid. Objectives Achieved The actual schedule in section 7 summarizes the projects that were implemented during the trip to Honduras. The implementation is different than originally anticipated. The team faced many difficulties and issues but still succeeded in the following tasks: (1) Addressing heat issue in Computer Lab. (2) Setting up hardware. (3) Installing updated software. (4) Updating the Internet system. (5) Addressing data storage issue. (6) Installing weather station for electric grid. Each of these areas is described in detail in the following sections: 8.1 Heat Issue in Computer Lab A few days before departure, the team learned that the air conditioner purchased online in the U.S. was too large to bring on the airplane. It would require an additional cost of about $200 and one less computer could be transported. The team decided not to transport this air conditioner and return it for a refund. Instead, the team would explore other air conditioning options in Honduras. Once in country, the team purchased an air conditioner in Tegucigalpa. The air conditioner consisted of an indoor unit and an outdoor unit with two insulated pipes carrying cold air between them. The old window a/c unit was taken out and the window was sealed with bricks and four 1” PVC pipes in the corner for Ethernet, drainage hose, and two copper tubes as shown in Figure 8. The units required a vacuum pump and coolant that was not readily available. Due to these unplanned difficulties, the team was not able to install the a/c during the week and instead hired a technician to finish the installation. The unit was installed weeks after the team has left Honduras. Figure 6 & 7: New A/C Unit 13 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation Figure 8: Sealed window with PVC inputs. 8.2 Hardware 8.2.1 Computers and Rearrangement The rearrangement of the room was implemented to take into consideration the room being used as a computer lab and a school room. The room was arranged with two tables against the North wall and two tables back-to-back against the West wall as shown in Figure 10. Eight new HP XW6400 Workstation computers were installed at the orphanage, three for staff and volunteers in the office and five in the computer lab. Every computer was equipped with a keyboard & mouse, Ethernet cord, and a monitor. Due to the inability to transport two computers, two extra monitors were used to set up dual monitor computers for Kristen and Ana. A webcam was also installed on the volunteer computer in the office. Figure 9: Computer Lab upon arrival 14 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation Figure 10: Computer Lab after Renovation 8.2.2 Wooden Tables The team decided to construct wooden tables as opposed to rearranging the plastic tables. Four tables, each 8’ long and 2’ wide, were built and placed inside of the computer lab. The tables were built out of wood with four legs each, 2¾” sidings, and supports in the middle. Each table is durable enough to last through rough treatment and support the weight of several computers. Wood is also much more resistant to heat than plastic, eliminating the problem of deformation. The tables were sanded and painted with two coats each (two tables purple and two tables light blue) with the children as an interaction activity as shown in Figure 12. 15 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation Figure 11: Computer Team making tables Figure 12: Painting tables with the kids 8.3 Software Each computer installed by the team was equipped with software prior to the trip. The software installed consists of Windows 7 Ultimate OS, Open Office, Rapidtyping, Byki Express, Firefox, and various educational games. Skype was also installed on the one office computer with the webcam. 16 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation Figure 13: Computers with pre-installed software 8.4 Wireless Network The team was not able to accomplish a reconfiguration of the wireless network due to insufficient knowledge of the current network. The Netgear switchbox was installed on the wall in the computer lab and replaced the old black switchbox. The old black switchbox was placed in the office to allow for the extra computer to be plugged in to the network as well. The old EnGenius bridges were replaced with a newer model of the same bridge. One of the bridges was infested with ants. After making these changes, the team soon learned that the bridges were not involved in the wireless network at all. The team attempted to plug in and configure the new bridges as access points so a stronger wireless network would be available. However, there was much difficulty and the bridges were not able to be successfully configured. They were left plugged in a way in hopes that they would somehow strengthen the network. Upon returning to Columbus, the team learned that the Wi-Fi was not working at MdL. After a few emails and phone calls to troubleshoot, the wireless was restored after both of the EnGenius bridges were unplugged. The team began researching and realized the bridges were interfering with the router and existing access point, causing them to malfunction. The only change made to the network was the addition of a switchbox. Although the Internet could not be improved, the team gathered valuable information to provide to future teams. A clear outline of the current network setup and precise instructions on the resources and changes that could enhance the wireless network is included in this documentation. 17 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation Figure 14: Gille installing bridge Figure 15: Ethernet switch in the lab Figure 16: Internet Diagram 2013 8.5 Data Storage To help kids and staff store their data, the team gave 41 flash drives ranging from 4-16 Gigabytes to the staff to be handed out to the kids. This is sufficient storage for each kid to hold their personal data. They will not have to worry about which computer they use as data can be carried with them and accessed on any computer. 8.6 Electric Grid The team installed two power surges in the computer lab and a weather station. The weather station was installed on top of the agriculture water tanks behind the schoolhouse as seen in Figure 17. The weather station provides data year-round and can be stored on the staff’s computer to be emailed to Ohio State or other service teams for future development of wind energy. Wind Speed data from March 15th to April 16th is shown in Figure 18, and the average wind speed was calculated to be 2.5 m/s. A 1 kW wind turbine is within reach of building with the cost of materials totaling less than $200. A link has been included in the references on how to construct one of these wind turbines. During one particular month at the orphanage, 3268 kWh was consumed, 18 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation costing 18,013.81 LPS or about $900.70. This is equal to about $0.28 per kWh. The wind speed would need to slightly increase for the wind turbine to be optimal, but we have only gathered one month of data and it is possible that other months of the year bring higher wind speeds. If one of these wind turbines can be successfully constructed and connected to the electric grid and the average wind speed can reach 5 m/s, the 1 kW turbines could produce around 1,000 kWh annually. This would equate to $280 in yearly savings, and possibly allow MdL to have access to some power even when the main power is down. Multiple wind turbines could greatly increase these savings, provided that the first prototype is successful. Future teams can use recorded data to find accurate savings. Power is calculated using the following equation: 1 𝑃 = ( ) ∗ 𝜌 ∗ 𝐴 ∗ 𝑣3 2 The variable 𝜌 is the density of air, therefore a constant and not a variable. The two variables are A, the area swept by the turbine blades, and v, the speed of the wind. Therefore future teams should note that in addition to larger wind speeds generating more power, using longer turbine blades are also be beneficial to wind energy production. Sustainability Statement To address sustainability, the team worked on keeping the computer lab in working order. Although the deliverables are mostly inside, the team utilized outdoor grade material wherever possible to extend the lifespan of the equipment and prevent damage and corrosion over time. A variety of spare equipment was left in the cabinet in the computer lab. The equipment includes a few keyboards & mice, as well as several spare Ethernet cords, power cords, and DVI cords. The old bridge that was not infested with ants is also in the cabinet, along with an old D-Link router that was not in use. The instruction manual for the new bridges is on a CD in the cabinet, and the CDs and instruction manuals for the weather station and webcam are in the top desk drawer under the volunteer computer with the webcam. The cabinet is pictured in Figure 19, Appendix 16.1. The computers brought down were preloaded with software that will educate the kids, and the programs will not require any necessary updating. Fox Filter, an add-on for Firefox installed on each computer in the lab, will prevent children from accessing any inappropriate content as well as block all harmful malware. When an administrator logs on one of the computers, they will automatically be notified of any updates for Fox Filter and can then update every computer. Updates to Fox Filter will make sure the computers are not vulnerable to the newest malware. Windows is set to automatically download and install critical updates overnight when the bandwidth is not limited. The weather station that the team installed at MdL provides valuable wind speed information at the orphanage to future service teams. This will allow future teams to research and consider providing more sustainable energy solutions to the orphanage. The heat in the computer lab is considerably lower with the new air conditioner. The unit will ensure that the lab stays at a reasonable temperature and maximizes the 20 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation lifespan of the computers, prevent the plastic tables from deformation if they are kept in the room for schoolwork, and provides a more comfortable setting for the kids that will encourage learning. The four new wooden tables are durable and sturdy enough to last a long time and support the weight of many computers. They will also not deform like the plastic tables did. To help each kid have adequate storage, flash drives with enough memory for all the needs of a child were given to staff. This allows each kid to have enough data for their educational needs and also for non-educational uses such as music. 10. Recommendations for Future Teams (1) MdL is located on the top of a mountain with a good source of wind. The team experienced an extended power outage during the short time there, and the power grid is clearly expensive and unreliable. An alternative sustainable and independent energy source is recommended and needed. The primary purpose of the team setting up the weather station data collector is in hope that future teams could implement and replicate the alternative energy wind generator project that Choluteca team 2012 has completed (See reference for link). Keep in mind that the wind generator implemented by Choluteca team is designed to supply energy only for lighting, a battery charger, and a box fan. The computer team has been in contact with long term volunteer James Bettis for wind data throughout the year. Future teams can email Kyle Sherman at sherman.1344@osu.edu for an invitation to the wind data dropbox.com account, and a further look into research and a study regarding wind turbines is necessary. (2) Ask the staff for feedback on the Open Office word processing software that was installed on all of the computers. If available at little to no cost, the switch can be made to Microsoft Office. (3) Keep in mind that MdL internet bandwidth is strictly limited, any large download or upgrade could cause the entire internet system to slow down and terminate as the team has experienced. The bandwidth is limited to 400Mb per day and is unlimited from 1 am to 5 am Honduras time. (4) Update all software and use extract parts for extra computers to replace hardware if necessary. Software updates should be done and tested in U.S. before departure. (5) Keyboards need to be changed to Spanish version if they haven’t done so. Easiest way would be purchasing Spanish keyboard layout stickers and switching the keyboard layout on the computer to Spanish. (6)MdL website hasn’t been updated in a while. It needs to be professionally redesigned and updated. 21 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation (7) Internet recommendation: Replace the current ASUS router with a new 300Mbps router. Replace the access point in the dining hall with a new 300Mbps access point. Plug in the EnGenius wireless bridges above the office and above the computer lab. When installing, unplug everything and begin with the router. Access the router configuration through 192.168.1.1 in an Internet browser on a computer plugged into the new router. Enable DHCP on the router and change the IP address to 192.168.0.1, because all devices have a default IP address as 192.168.1.1 and they will interfere if you plug in multiple with that address. Create a secured network and enter an SSID and passphrase. Then, plug in the switchbox in the office, which should be connected to the switchbox in the computer lab. Replace the access point in the dining hall with the new access point. Using a computer in the lab, type in 192.168.1.1 to configure this access point. Set up the wireless network with all the same settings as the network on the router. This means same SSID, same security, and same passphrase. Change the IP address of the access point to 192.168.1.2 and disable DHCP. DHCP is what assigns IP addresses to all computers on the network, and only one device on the network can have it enabled or else they will interfere. Then, plug in the bridge from the network side of the power adapter to the switchbox. Type in 192.168.1.1 in the browser on a computer in the lab, and set the operation mode of the bridge to access point. Then, edit the wireless network settings to once again have the same security, same SSID, and same passphrase as the previous two. Set the IP address of this EnGenius access point to 192.168.1.3 and disable DHCP. Finally, plug in the EnGenius Bridge in the office from the network side of the power adapter to the switchbox. Type in 192.168.1.1 from a computer in the office and change the operation mode to access point and enter the same wireless SSID, security, and passphrase one more time. The IP address on this one does not need to be changed because it is the only one left with the default address, but DHCP does need to be disabled. 11. Lessons Learned The group learned many valuable lessons while in country including the following: Make sure all software is updated in the U.S. The internet bandwidth is very limited and cannot be used for updates while in Honduras. It is very inconvenient to work during the night hours where the bandwidth is unlimited. The group should have considered all possible problems that could be encountered while in Honduras. There were many unexpected problems that we occurred such as internet being unavailable, not having proper equipment for a/c unit installation, and not enough tools for wood working. Many problems could have been foreseen if more information was given so the group provided information for future group projects. Research on the network bridges should have been performed while in the U.S. The real problem with the Internet connections can be resolved with a new router and new access points with faster speed limits. The group learned to be careful with all equipment used. While painting the tables, the group used an oil based paint that would not come out of clothes or 22 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation skin without paint thinner that was not readily available. The kids should not be involved with equipment that can make a mess or can be hazardous. The team encountered a problem with the luggage weight on the airplane. While the group is preparing to buy equipment, a running tab of the weight and dimensions of objects could be kept. The group was not able to take 2 computers and an a/c unit on the airplane. 12. Cultural Experience Honduras is a country full of amazement and traditions. The team has experienced many traditions while adventuring around the cities and locals. This includes an everyday 5-9 schedule for most of the Hondurans. The majority of their buildings, houses, and roads are built on and around the mountains. The military also has a clear presence throughout the country, and they can be seen in the middle of many of the streets holding large guns, which one would never see in the United States. It was memorable to experience the fun tradition of celebrating birthday Honduran style with the kids at the orphanage. 13. Intersection of Engineering and Culture in a Developing Country Engineering in a developing country of a completely different culture can be very difficult, even with extensive preparation. Development of projects needs to be prepared to the best of the group’s ability before departure to the developing country. The group needs to keep in mind that the resources available to them may not be available to them in the developing country. A successful project in a developing country will use resources that can be obtained easily at the project’s location. There are many obstacles that can set back a project, and no project ever goes perfectly as planned. Culture shock is also something experienced when traveling to a new country, as the daily life and culture of people in Honduras is completely different than that of Americans. A language barrier can be time consuming and restricting when communication is needed. The lack of consistent electricity should be expected and the group should have to tasks ready to perform if the electricity is not available. A group must also not to expect for an exact product to be readily available in a developing country. 23 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation 14. I only can find one box that says "extra computer parts" and it had 27 ethernet cables including two very small ones. (As long as none of those are old dialup cables) What software/product keys for software is on the labeled DVDs in the cabinet? I only found an open MS Office in Spanish CD and Windows 7 without keys. I know that we also have MS 2010 with keys, that are currently installed on the laptops. How much does MdL currently pay per month for Internet services? Are they willing to pay a higher monthly fee for more bandwidth? 2,200 Lps roughly $110 The plan is called E-Consulting and from what I can tell in the system info it says we have a receive symbol rate of 33 Msps. On my computer it says 54 Mbps is the speed. Is there any way to recycle/sell broken or old computers in Honduras? Still working computers we have given to staff or community members or maybe sold, I'm not sure. To recycle computers we do not yet know of any program. Can you send us a picture of the computer lab? What are the dimensions of the computer lab? 272" by 153" are the dimensions of the lab. As we learn from the 2011 computer team's report, MdL is currently operating on Windows 7, we were wondering if they need any more copies of Windows 7. Do you need any more copies of Microsoft 2010? We do have some copies of Windows 7 but I am not sure if they all work. Additional copies would be appreciated but maybe only one or two. We do need Microsoft 2010 and Windows 7 for two of the office computers. Office Computers: The two office computers for the director and administrator are in need of being updated or maybe replaced. If they can be replaced then the computers could be cleaned and used in the volunteer office as we are currently using our personal computers. Here are the specifics on the office computers. Ana's computer has Windows XP Pro Office 2002 and 2.54 GB free and 37.2 GB used. Kristen's computer has XP Pro as well and Office 2002 and 34.5 GB free with 74 GB of total space. We were wondering if the office needs a webcam for future conferences.(would you like a copy of Skype?) They thought a webcam would be a great idea and so would a copy of Skype. Whether or not more computers are needed for both the lab and the offices, or replaced with new ones.(laptops or desktops) Sounds like the administrative office prefers desktops. I think the volunteers would be better off with laptops but if we inherit the old desktops from the admin office that would be fine. Also the computer lab does have locks on the wall that leave room for three additional computers. We have two laptops available but one was going to be used for volunteers. The second has an admin log-in that is unknown to anyone at MdL. 28 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation How is the condition of the internet? Wireless or Ethernet? Does it need to be improved or replaced? The internet is wireless but as you may know it has limited bandwidth and it appears to be affected by weather. It really does need to be improved. I'm not sure if the routers are the problem or the internet service provider or bandwidth. If you want more information about those things let me know and I can look into it. Do you need help moving the internet modem to the new office? I'm not sure what you mean by this, please clarify. If anything is needed with the internet, can we have the router brand and model number? Also any current security systems? We heard that you guys might want to implement a parental control for the internet. Supposedly we have a firewall but I have no details about it. Here are the routers and information about them. The office has two routers: a Hughes HN7000S IP.S and ASUS WL-500G Premium v2 In the computer lab there are other routers that are not being used: Another ASUS WL500G PV2, A Wired Router D-Link DIR-100, and 4 EnGenius Broadband Bridges (I think) model numbers EOC2611P (2) and EOC-2610 Long Range (2) One bridge appears to be in use above the lab but I am not sure if it is actually working. In an office near the back of the compound there are also these routers and other equipment: Linksys WRT54GS Broadband Router, TP Link 54 Mbps extended range wireless access point and an ASUS GX100SB Desktop Switch. All of these things were in the psychologists office but are now available to be moved. The only reason they would remain there would be to provide internet to the back buildings where groups and staff stay. Also we would like to reactive or implement a parental control to protect the kids from inappropriate content. We heard that you guys might want separate accounts for each kid on each computer. Do you want kids to be assigned computers? Or would you like the students to be able to log onto any computer and access their account(which would require a server, I believe)? We think it would be great to have separate accounts for kids who are age 12 or older right now. Would that be possible? If we need a server we could possibly use one of the unused laptops as a server, or there is also one that has a cracked screen. It would be best given our setup to use a server, not to assign kids to specific computers because of only having six that work routinely. Would you like a bridge in the computer lab for students?(a router that connects to the modem to increase signal strength.) If you think that a bridge would help that would be great. At least we could test the bridge that is above the lab right now to see if it works. If you need to know I can check to see if the three remaining bridges we have work. (As long as someone could explain how to connect them to the network). Are there any educational software programs that you would be interested in us getting? We are interested but the Tia in charge does not have any specific ideas. One 29 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation that I can think of would be a typing program in Spanish. That would be very helpful. Any other ideas you have would be welcomed. Is heat still an issue in the computer lab? We had an idea to grow some plants (vines or vegetable of some sort) on the sides of the building. Is this reasonable?(other ideas) The Tia said that heat is an issue during the hotter times of the year. We do have some chicken wire on one side of the lab but the plants need to be cultivated a bit more. Would you like us to bring laminated flyers or instruction sheets for common problems related to the computers? (If the kids have common problems that persist, like accessing the internet.) Yes, that would be great. How to save a file in Microsoft Word would be great, or how to transfer files from the computer to a USB memory (if you can bring those). Other ideas are: how to copy and paste information, and any other common problems you can think of. Any needs for a printer? Yes we have the need for at least one in the office or in the computer lab. We currently have one HP Deskjet F4480 that will be put into one of those places. Would you like us to bring a bunch of flash drives for the children and staff? We think we can gather a large amount from lost-and-founds throughout the school. Definitely! Most of the big kids have flash drives but they are constantly full of music so it would be nice to give them one that is used only for school. If you can we could use 30 flash drives for kids and 10 for staff. Any combination of that would be great, thanks! Are there any other issues or suggestions? One idea that I have is to bring compressed air cans to be able to clean the machines and even printers. Or if you have any other ideas on cleaning maintenance a time to teach that to some staff members would be great! 30 | P a g e Technology Integration Post-Trip Documentation 17.3 Appendix: Internet Documentation The following document was emailed James Bettis: Internet Documentation To configure either EnGenius ENH500 Bridge: 1. Make sure only one of the bridges is plugged in and type 192.168.1.1 in a browser on a computer connected to the same switchbox as the bridge. Sometimes you have to refresh it a couple times. 2. Type in the username and password, which are both admin. 3. On the left hand column under wireless network or SSID, there is probably one network or SSID that has enabled checked. 4. Click edit on that one, then you can change the SSID which is the name of the network when you connect to it if you want. 5. In the wireless security part you can change that to WPA2-PSK then enter a passphrase for the network. 6. You then need to click save then save/reload at the top of the left column. 7. In order to configure the other, go back to 192.168.1.1 on the bridge already configured and change that IP address to something different, such as 192.168.1.2 You can then access the other bridge at the default IP address without the other interfering. If Internet goes down: Check bandwidth 1. Type in 192.168.0.1 in the browser of any computer connected to the Internet. 2. Click usage and see if the bandwidth for the day has run out. If so, the Internet will be back up the next day. Restart Router 1. Unplug the power cord to the ASUS router in the office. 2. Wait one minute then plug it back in. Reboot Modem 1. Type in 192.168.0.1 in the browser of any computer connected to the Internet. 2. Find the reboot option and press it.
