Cleaner Production
Proposal for a continuing education of
university teachers
Eva Pongrácz
University of Oulu
Department of Process and Environmental Engineering
Cleaner Production project
objectives
• Project coordinated at NorTech Oulu
– To create a Clean technology educational programme and
strategy for the Barents area
• The subject of the educational programme is a broader
Cleaner Production concept including:
– Best available technologies
– Environmental Management
– Eco-efficiency & extended producer responsibility
• The proposed structure of the study programme is modular,
with distinct engineering and management modules
– The inclusion of management subjects had been a special
requirement of the Ministry of the Environment
• Modular design based on the structure of our Master level
studies after the Bologna process
The structure of B.Sc. and M.Sc.

Autumn seminars
• One week seminar, where some of the
environmental concepts will be introduced
• Most of the subjects to be presented belong to the
curriculum of Oulu University
• 9-10 subjects to be presented
• 2 different weeks, some of the basic courses are
the same, however, one week could be more
technological oriented, the other more
management oriented
• In addition, it was requested that an industry visit to
be included in the programme
Suggested programme 1

Summary
• Main attention is to be given to provide knowledge
to manage environmental affairs within the industry
by application of proper methods, tools and
technologies.
• Most of the courses were taken from the most
requested list, however, an additional course is
suggested to both programs as we felt that they
are significant and our university can offer
significant expertise on it.
• Apart of the “hard values”, such as technologies,
processes, and management skills, it is also
important to address the “soft values”, to raise
awareness and improve attitudes.
