CONSTITUTION 1 Title The competition shall be known as the H.J.STONER & SON (JEWELLERS) CRICKET LEAGUE (MID-SUSSEX); shall formally affiliate, via the Sussex Cricket Board, to the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board); and shall formally adopt the ECB Disciplinary Model Rules, and “Safe Hands” policy. N.B. - All member clubs shall also affiliate and adopt as above. This is a condition of membership. 2 Objectives a) To promote and encourage the playing of competitive cricket in a friendly and sportsman-like manner in order that the game may flourish. b) To encourage each club to provide the best possible conditions under which to play. All teams in all Divisions are encouraged to play their home games on grass wickets. All Division One games shall be played on grass wickets. However, each team outside Division One shall state at the start of the season whether its home games will be played on a grass or an artificial surface. Only in exceptional circumstances (not connected with the weather) shall a team be allowed to switch a league match to a different venue (whether an alternative ground of the same club or the ground of its opponents) from that indicated by the Club Information section. Any such switch must be requested to the Secretary, who may allow it at his absolute discretion provided the opposition agree. 3 Membership a) There shall be a minimum membership of 8 teams. b) There shall be no maximum limit. c) If necessary the competition shall be divided into two or more divisions. d) Promotion and relegation between divisions shall be decided by the Executive Committee, but the aim shall be to promote and relegate at least one between divisions, unless circumstances decree otherwise. If a team which would otherwise qualify for promotion is debarred because there is a higher team from the same club in the division immediately above, the next highest side shall be offered promotion (See also 3i below). e) Any side finishing at the bottom of the lowest division for two consecutive years shall apply for re-election if it wishes to retain its membership. That side shall lose membership if deemed appropriate by a minimum of 75% of votes cast at an Annual General Meeting or a Special General Meeting. f) New teams applying for membership shall be elected to the competition at an Annual or Special General Meeting provided a minimum of 75% of votes cast at that meeting are in agreement. g) After the 2010 AGM teams may now be elected into Division One. h) Teams may have their membership terminated at any time if at least 50% of the other teams in membership at the time are in agreement to the termination. i) Clubs with more than one team in the League. No club may have more than one team in the same division. If the normal channels of promotion or relegation would have produced this situation, the Executive Committee shall have the power to determine placing of the teams affected for the following season. (See also 3 d above). j) When a multi-team club is forced to scratch a fixture or fixtures through lack of availability, that scratching/those scratching shall start with its lower/lowest team(s) in the Stoner League...i.e. its higher/highest team(s) shall be the last to scratch. k) No team shall participate in any game under the League’s control (League, Cup, SM Trophy, Stoner Conference fixtures, or RD Cup) until all monies due are in the Treasurers hands. If the Treasurer has not received such monies, the penalty for non-fulfilled fixture shall apply. (See Playing Conditions 4 i). Monies due comprise 1) joining fee where applicable, 2) annual subscription, 3) Handbook contribution, 4) Affiliation fees 5) payment for cricket balls, 6) payment for previous winter’s Presentation Event, and 7) the previous seasons fines including any incurred due to a) non-attendance at the AGM, and b) failure to return the trophies by the specified time. l) The League (or the Executive Committee if urgent) shall have the power to fine any team up to £50 for withdrawing from its competitions at any time between an A.G.M. and the end of the following season’s fixtures. 4 Annual General Meeting a) Any proposed changes to this Constitution or the Playing Conditions either by teams or the Executive Committee shall only be made at the A.G.M. and shall be in the Secretary’s hands no later than 7 days after the end of the League’s season. In exceptional circumstances changes to the Constitution only (not the Playing Conditions) may be made at a Special General Meeting provided that the criteria in rule (7) below have been observed. b) The A.G.M shall be held no later than 31st October each year, when each team shall be allowed to send two delegates, only one of whom may vote. c) Teams shall be given at least 14 days notice in writing. d) A quorum shall be no fewer than 75% representation of all teams. e) Each team shall be entitled to one vote only on any matter at the A.G.M: the Chairman shall have the casting vote. f) Any proposed changes at an A.G.M. shall take effect provided more than 50% of teams in attendance are in agreement. 5 Officers and Conduct of the League’s Business a) The appointment of the President shall be made at the A.G.M. He shall have the option to attend all League meetings. b) The day-to-day running of all matters concerning the League shall be administered by an Executive Committee comprising the following, all of whom shall be elected where possible at the A.G.M.: President, Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and a minimum of ten others with ideally at least one from each division and ideally from ten different clubs. If any position is contested, it shall be decided by secret ballot and not a show of hands. c) This Executive Committee shall meet on a minimum of three occasions per year (pre season, in season and pre A.G.M) and additionally at the request of at least three of its members. A quorum of this committee shall be no fewer than ten. d) This Executive Committee shall have the power to enforce the Constitution and Playing Conditions of the League and to take disciplinary action via its Disciplinary Sub Committee against any team or player infringing them. After 10.00am the day following each match your ability to access this page will be blocked. If you then need to add further details or make amendments this can only be done by sending the relevant information to Results Secretary. The result defaults will have been pre-set in the website and will update the League tables automatically, but each club’s Play-Cricket website administrator will be required to fill out the batting and bowling points to facilitate this. Should the Play-Cricket website be down, the Excel score sheet can be used as a backup. Please complete the sheet and forward it to jonsears666@gmail.com An email acknowledgement will act as confirmation for each result sheet received. It will then still be your responsibility to complete the Play-Cricket match information when the website becomes available. If the home team fails to post the full result and match scorecard details by 10.00am the day following each match, a penalty of 10 points will be deducted from the home side. Any appeal should be made no later than the following Tuesday after the disputed result. The Executive Committee will then make a decision and notify the home team of the outcome. 6 Finance a) There shall be a minimum joining fee (where appropriate) and annual subscription for each team which shall be fixed at each A.G.M. b) A statement of accounts (audited by an independent financial adviser) for each financial year 1st January to 31st December shall be sent by first class post to each team and League officials no later than 31st March in the following year. c) League funds shall be lodged in an approved Bank or Building Society account. d) All teams shall be accountable for the cost of TWO Presentation Event places, whether attending or not (Conference teams: ONE place). 7 Special General Meeting a) A Special General Meeting may be called at the request of i) a minimum of 4 teams, or ii) the Executive Committee. To this end, team sheets shall be exchanged prior to each match held under the auspices of the League. b) No player may play for more than one club in the same season, except in exceptional circumstances and only with the prior agreement of both clubs and the Executive Committee (See Playing Conditions for Transfer System). c) No player joining or seeking to join a club after 31st July may play in any game under the league’s auspices during that season. To that end, each club shall provide a list of its total playing membership (including colts and with every surname preceded by a first name) by 1st August. d) No player who has played in County 2nd XI/Minor Counties cricket (or equivalent) or above in the previous five years may play in the competition. No reminder will be issued. e) Failure to return trophies won the previous season to the League on or by 31st July will incur a £10 fine. Failure to do so will mean a team will be penalised, three points for every £ then owed, at the start of the following season (i.e. that team will begin the next season with a negative points tally) See also 3. k) (MEMBERSHIP). SPIRIT OF CRICKET (First incorporated in its Laws in 2000) Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the captains. 1 There are two Laws which place the responsibility for the team’s conduct firmly on the captain. Responsibility of captains The captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of Game as well as within the Laws. Player’s conduct In the event of a player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire, or criticising by word or action the decisions of an umpire, or showing dissent or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into disrepute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and to the player’s captain, and instruct the latter to take action. 2 Fair and unfair play According to the Laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play. The umpires may intervene at any time and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required. 3 The umpires are authorised to intervene in case of: Time wasting. Damaging the pitch Dangerous or unfair bowling Tampering with the ball Any other action that they consider to be unfair 4 The Spirit of the Game involves RESPECT for: Your opponents Your own captain and team The role of the umpires The game’s traditional values 5 It is against the Spirit of the Game: To dispute an umpire’s decision by word, action or gesture To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice, for instance: (a) to appeal knowing that the batsman is not out (b) to advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing (c) to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one’s side. 6 Violence: There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play. 7 Players: Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match. Every player is expected to make an important contribution to this. ▪▪▪▪▪ ▪▪▪▪ ▪▪▪ LEAGUE PLAYING CONDITIONS 2014 1. (h) If the scores continue level, the winner shall be the side, in order:(a) which has the higher score over the first 5 overs of the innings. (b) which loses the least number of wickets in the first 5 overs of the innings. (c) if still equal, take an over off each time, with higher scoring rate taking precedence over losing fewer wickets. (i) If the scores are still level a bowl out will take place. Toss of a coin by Captains will be a last option. 2. PLAYER QUALIFICATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY (a) The same rules shall apply as for Mid-Sussex Cricket League games except for the purpose of the Cup. “No player shall play in the Semi-Final unless he has previously played in at least two matches FOR THE SAME TEAM OR LOWER under the auspices of the League (ie League, Cup and SM Trophy); no player shall play in the Final unless he has previously played in four such matches. (b) Abandoned Cup & Trophy matches (i.e. matches started but not finished) do not count as appearance qualifications for the semi finals and finals. (c) Any side found to have fielded an ineligible player shall be deemed to have lost the tie concerned. 3. REDUCING THE MATCH FORMAT DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER. (a) The objective of reducing overs is to give the greatest opportunity for a match of equal overs without reverting to a bowl out. If in the view of the match umpires bearing in mind the prevailing ground, weather and light conditions - it is considered to be most unlikely that the full quota of overs will be bowled in any match; it is recommended that a pre-emptive decision is made to reduce overs in both innings equally. The level of the reduction will be made at the discretion of the umpires. (b) Match with delayed start - the captains must agree on a match of shorter duration, with the maximum overs per bowler no more than 1/5 of the agreed total. (c) Rain affected games. Overs will be deducted at the rate of one per 3 minutes to a minimum of 5 overs per side. (d) If rain curtails a match, the winner shall be the side scoring most runs in the first 10 overs of the innings, or 9, 8, 7, 6 down to 5. 4. REARRANGEMENT OF MATCH DATE DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER. Match unable to start or finish on designated ground on scheduled day. In order of precedence: The side drawn at home may provide an alternative ground which must be accepted by the away side. The side drawn away may provide a ground which must be accepted by the home side. Two further dates, which must not take precedence over any Mid-Sussex Cricket League game may be mutually agreed between the captains. These games must be played before the next round. Any game re-scheduled thus should take place on the ground originally designated where possible. The captains may mutually agree on any other method of skill to determine a result. If a result cannot be produced from the above, the match shall be decided by a SubCommittee consisting of one of the League’s elected officers and a League contact from two other clubs not involved. (This Sub-Committee would almost certainly have to “meet” by telephone, and it is hoped that common sense would prevent its ever having to do so). 5. SETTLEMENT OF FIXTURE IF NOT PLAYED DUE TO CLUBS NOT BEING ABLE TO AGREE A DATE. If both clubs are unable to agree on a suitable date(s) the home side’s choice of date shall take precedence. If this is not suitable to the away side the home side shall be deemed to have won the tie. 6. DRINKS BREAK / TEAS (a) Drinks shall be provided by the home side. (b) Teas will be provided at the discretion of the home side and taken at a time agreed by both captains. For the ‘long in the tooth’ readers of this article there can be few for whom the issue of membership has not been a major concern at some point in the history of their club. Most of the clubs in the MSCL are based in small towns or villages with relatively limited catchment areas, with the main competition for membership coming not from each other but from competing sports, interests, families etc. Although the league is undoubtedly thriving and over the years has moved forward in leaps and bounds, in recent times we have sadly witnessed a number of clubs either fold or downsize, so I was keen to use this opportunity to explore some of the reasons why. I thought it would be worth starting by looking at some of the stats surrounding my own club Edenbridge, from last year. A total of 69 players turned out for one of the two Saturday league or two Sunday friendly teams Of those 69 players, 39 were under 25, 21 over 40, and 10 players were between 25 and 40 The 25-40 age group only participated in 5% of all our matches These vary markedly in two respects from the same profile say 20 years’ ago. Firstly, 20 years ago we had a very even age profile of players from 16-50ish with no obvious gaps; compare that to our ‘missing link’ profile above which shows we have (thankfully) a strong set of juniors and youngsters, we’re well supported by our loyal over 40s but we have a massive gap in the 25-40 age group. Now this may just be Edenbridge but I think the phenomenon is likely more widespread as the ECB have acknowledged the same issue through various initiatives aimed at getting former cricketers (who may have played at school and then given up for example ) back into the game through programmes like ‘Get into Cricket’. The second area where we have seen huge change is in the number of members we have to now have to cover a league season and the average number of matches people play per season. Again, back in the day, our experience was that a player, signing up in the pre-season, was basically committed to playing every weekend throughout the season with perhaps a one or two week holiday break at most (what’s wrong with Sunday to Friday holidays?). What we now see, particularly as we encourage more ‘family’ members (from that missing age group), is that an increasing number of members struggle to commit fully to playing every week but prefer a more informal approach of every other weekend, or perhaps alternating cricket with other important family events. So, last year, we ended up using a total of 69 players across the 4 weekend teams, which is pretty high given that many of the younger members play both days! I looked back at the 2004 season’s score books – in that season we used 52 members with the same teams. Quite a difference. So what else is going on then? For those of us with junior sections we have the issues of transition from juniors to seniors, the general maintaining of interest in the 15-18 bracket and then the exit to uni/world travelers/jobs etc. (18-23). At Edenbridge, we’ve tried to deal with the transition issue by re-inventing our Sunday 2’s as an active feeder team which attempts to bridge our last age group side at U15 with the senior set up and over the last 5 years this has been pretty successful. It’s a great fun side to play in and genuinely eliminates the scare factor for juniors who feel that Senior cricket will just be too much of a step up. That said, we have still suffered a fairly significant decay in this age group as youngsters simply appear to lose interest or perhaps have just too much on their plate with GCSEs, an emerging social life, FIFA 2014 etc. So not sure we have this one entirely cracked yet. So back to the ‘lost generation.’ Where are you 25-40 year olds? I suspect the dearth in that category is due more to general changes in life style over the last two generations with both partners working all week where another full day out on the weekend is a tough ask, alongside emerging family commitments, all making for a very congested schedule. A good generally untapped (in our case) opportunity though presents itself as parents begin to take their children to early junior sessions, begin to get interested in the game again and can sometimes be persuaded to have the odd game on a Sunday. What’s clear is that it’s definitely a buyers’ market out there with many competing calls on our members and prospective members’ time; we’re in the position of competing for their attention. We all know what a fantastic game cricket is – we just need to get that message out there to anyone who will listen! Jon Woodman Club Captain Edenbridge CC DIVISION TWO SEASON REVIEW – 2013. by Bill Anthony, Balcombe CC. Having been Captain and or Vice Captain of one of the teams at Balcombe for over 25 years it might have seemed a strange decision to put my name in the frame to be Captain for another season. I had my reservations, the League looked particularly strong and the majority of the potential squad looked particularly old, but I was duly elected and prepared for a challenging season. The pre season will always be remembered for the sad passing of Craig Botting at the young age of 24. Craig was the fourth generation if Botting’s to play for Balcombe, his greatgrandfather “Dicker” Botting was reputed to be one of the best village cricketers not to play county cricket, his grandfather Trevor Botting was certainly one of the best cricketers I have played with at this level and his father Richard and his uncle Gary still turn out regularly for the current teams. Craig was an incredibly popular individual who got on well with all ages and with all who met him, he is and will always be sadly missed. An opening losing draw versus Chailey on a particularly cold day rather set the scene for the season. There are many strong 1st XI’s in Division Two and it was difficult to see where we might secure the points we need to avoid relegation. We were, however, fortunate to recruit an “overseas” player who had come over from Australia to play cricket for Haywards Heath but was found to be surplus to requirements. Greg Briggs was a very capable slow left armer who had played with the Waugh brothers (apparently he was at the other end when Mark Waugh scored his maiden first class century) in New South Wales. Greg Briggs was only around for six matches before he returned to Australia but his impact was so immediate and so important that it seemed like he had been around all season and he had some great stories to tell. On 22nd August another Balcombe player, Clive Elliott, tragically passed away at the age of 47. Clive was a wonderful man who rarely had a bad word about anyone and who was greatly liked by all at the Club. Clive loved the game of cricket and was Stoner League Wicketkeeper of the Year in 2012. Clive had recently changed jobs which enabled him to play more Saturday League cricket which he enjoyed immensely. Clive was also heavily involved with the Sussex Farmers CC with whom I toured on many occasions. By the last game of the season we needed to beat Smallfield to stay in Division Two. It was one of those games that illustrate the appeal of the beautiful game. Balcombe crawled to 174 -9 after 47 overs. Smallfield were 70 for no wicket in reply and I remember thinking that relegation had not been part of the plan but it now looked like a certainty. Enter Ken Mitchell who took eight wickets to win us the game and secure our place in Division Two. I have lots of good memories of events both on and off the pitch of last season: sharing a few beers and a few memories after a match with Alan Smith, Mark Smith, Shaun Gallagher, Nick Warde and Greg Briggs at The Red Lion Turners Hill, sharing a similar experience with Alan Smith, Mark Smith, Shaun Gallagher at Mark Haylett at Chailey, winning the Sally Miller Trophy at Forest Row and the incredibly warm welcome we received at Staplefield CC and the two minutes of applause to celebrate the life of Craig Botting. Cricket is the greatest game that the wit of man has yet devised but for me it is bumping into all those acquaintances you have made over the years playing the beautiful game that makes it all the more worthwhile. DIVISION THREE SEASON REVIEW – 2013. by Mike Webb, Roffey CC. This season for me was remarkable in many ways. Firstly of course it was very different to the previous year in terms of seeing plenty of sunshine although in fact our promotion clinching match ironically, was washed out! Another remarkable event was us, actually winning the League!! Unfortunately the season was shortened by the departure of Haywards Heath thirds and by mid June we had been well beaten by Lindfield, a good young East Grinstead side and a very experienced Cowden team, all at Faygate. After 4 successive home games we then went on the road so to speak. 7 away games on the trot followed on a variation of wickets which were all won, including a concession by Turners Hill and then an excellent victory at Cowden suddenly found us at the top of the League. This was due mainly to our experienced opening bowler Jim Barnes who helped himself to 43 wickets. As a batsman myself it has always been hard to appreciate the 'bowlers lot' but Jim certainly used the different wicket conditions well and with great consistency. It is all very well a fast bowler running in and spraying the ball everywhere but there is no answer to good line and length. Talking of wickets it must be said there are good and bad throughout the MSCL. In three successive, very contrasting weeks we played on an absolute minefield at Copthorne (no disrespect but it was), followed by Preston Nomads (nothing needs to be said) and then (my first time ever in a league game) the artificial at Hassocks. A couple of local winos turned up to watch and whilst in the field one decided to entertain us with a streak around the outfield, another remarkable first for me after 40 years of playing this lovely game!! At East Grinstead Jim Barnes then hit the winning run in the final over and 13 year old Aiden Sparling took the catch at Lindfield to complete victory there by just 8 runs virtually securing the League title. This was achieved with the 1 point required in our final match against Preston Nomads. We have in recent seasons always mixed youth with experience in our teams at Roffey. I enjoy playing against teams such as East Grinstead and Lindfield who use their teams in a similar way and there are a few clubs with ageing sides who should seriously consider creating junior sections to secure their futures. Finally I would like to thank Cowden CC who are the only team to come back to our club for a beer, a part of the game which is sadly missing these days. We look forward to Division 2 this season DIVISION FOUR SEASON REVIEW – 2013. by Neil Wallace, Lingfield CC. After being asked by Bill to round up the 2013 season in Division Four I spent a lot of time deliberating the weather, the missed catches, the great sporting gestures & the injuries but I have decided to review the season club by club. Ditchling 3's finished in 1st place and as everyone knows the table doesn't lie. They were very consistent throughout the season and never looked in danger of missing out on promotion. They won the home encounter against us by 4 wickets and it probably would have been more had our number 11 not added 23 for the final wicket. The reverse game looked to be much closer but the rain put pay to an exciting finish as Ditchling ended 130 for 5 chasing 220 for victory. It will be interesting to see how they cope in Division Three as I think it will be a big jump in standard for all of the promoted sides. In 2nd place were our local rivals & friends Crawley Down 2's. In my personal opinion they were the best side that we faced and had Cuckfield not batted out for the draw at Sandy Lane (87 for 6 from 47 overs) they would have won the league. I'm certainly not blaming Cuckfield, most of us will have batted out for draws in our time and personally I wouldn't want to play cricket without that option available. I believe that it adds an extra dimension to the game and anything that gets a skipper thinking is positive in my view. We finished in 3rd place and all credit goes to our colts section. Four of our U15's played regularly and our U14 skipper (my nephew) also played in half of the games. Stephen Brownsey was our stand out U15, deservedly winning the Stoner League Young Player of the Year Award for his combination of Wickets, Runs & Catches. However, our performance of the season went to another U15, Will Jeffries, whose 67 & 6 for 33 won us the game against Palmers when they were above us in the league. Our 2014 season may well depend on the availability of those same colts as they hit their GCSE’s. Edenbridge 2's finished in 4th place and can probably count themselves unlucky not to have pipped us to the last promotion place. We beat them twice but both games could have gone either way and they would have finished 3rd had they come out on top. Dom & Josh are both good guys and a pleasure to play against. The runs they scored between them was very impressive and if they both play regularly during 2014 I'm sure that they will be close to the top come the end of August. In 5th place were Streat 2's but they were closer to 1st place than 6th and were promotion contenders all through the season. In many ways I wish they had been promoted with us as playing away to Streat is one of the highlights of my season. Middleton Manor is a lovely place to play cricket and a ground that makes the MSCL what it is. Nearly 70 points behind but in 6th place were Lindfield 4's. I can't say that I enjoy Whitemans Green as much as Middleton Manor but Lindfield are great hosts and the homemade cakes more than made up for the track (along with the 5 wicket win to seal promotion). Just behind Lindfield in 7th place were Palmers 2's. For most of the season they were promotion contenders but some erratic form towards the end saw them slip down the table. Despite being our longest journey I really enjoy a late summer visit to Hove Rugby Club. I'm not sure who the groundsman is but when we visited in July the track was an absolute belter! Another ground that I will miss in 2014. In 8th place and just above the relegation spots were Cuckfield 4's. I'm not sure if we were just unlucky but they gave us two of our toughest games of the season and I have no idea how they finished so low. In the home fixture Andrew Middleton scored 100* and Rodney Candfield took 5 wickets as the visitors won by 52 runs. If they were 4th team regulars then there is no way they would have finished 8th. In the away fixture neither played but there were still a couple of players that would have stood out in higher teams. We were very grateful to Martin Britt who after being dropped on the first ball went on to score 85*. In 9th place were SJM 3's. Mal and his fantastic ground is another disappointment of being promoted. In our away game I witnessed one of the most sporting gestures that I have seen on a cricket field. On an extremely windy day, that was not a pleasure to play cricket on, one of our players was injured and had to be taken to the hospital by another member of our team. This left us with 9 players but Mal very kindly ensured that we had two sub fielders for the whole of their innings. We eventually dropped a catch in the last over to avoid victory but Mal was a credit to his club and the MSCL that day with a gesture that will remain with me for a long time. Rotating your players as wickets fall, to ensure that two sub fielders are always available, is no small gesture when you are 50 for 6 chasing 225. Thanks Mal Last but least were Cowfold & Lower Beeding. Danny & his side were a pleasure to play against and if they can get their availability issues resolved I'm sure that they can bounce back at the first attempt. Overall it was an enjoyable season in Division Four. Obviously we won promotion but my main memories are from our game at SJM and the close encounters that we had with Crawley Down, Cuckfield, Edenbridge & Streat. I'm sure that 2014 will be even tougher for us as we start to encounter more & more 1st XI sides with games against Ardingly, Copthorne & Smallfield. However I have no doubt that I'll have plenty of players available when we visit Preston Nomads and their legendary teas! Lastly I would just like to say please, please, please, please, please can someone make it stop raining!!!!! DIVISION FIVE SEASON REVIEW – 2013. by Tim Wise, Dormansland CC. After two very enjoyable seasons in Balcombe’s second team, I made the difficult decision to return to Dormansland, where I have always played Sunday cricket, in order to try and help rescue the 2nd XI from extinction. Having slipped down the divisions, we had a group of players returning from university and/or “coming of age” – who were keen to take on the responsibility and management of that team. Although I would have rather played in division 2, I was happy to support them in their endeavours. Doing so has proved very fruitful for our club, as, without any colts teams that can feed U14-U17 players to our senior sides, our availabilities were quite good on the whole, due in part to the spirit and energy of our young side. Ceding responsibility also helps get a lot of the work done – although maybe not quite in the way we would sometimes like it - that a significant few (many of whom will be the ones that actually read this report) do at each club, and it’s certainly been a necessary part of our “evolution” at Dormansland. That being said, we conceded one game, and would have conceded a second if the opposition had not withdrawn from the league during the season. The overrunning football season caused us (and other clubs, I am sure) tremendous trouble. Also, it was with great sadness that we saw 2 teams – Smallfield 2’s and Horsted Keynes 2’s – have to withdraw from the league as they were unable to raise sides. Although it makes the season somewhat disjointed, no blame should be attached to either club – we all know how hard it is for villages in the shadow of County League clubs to run 2 sides and playing numbers of recreational cricketers, along with many sports, are currently in a bit of a decline. The division was rather two-tiered. With our early season availability, we were in the second tier, but better availability after May put us firmly back in the first tier, and a run of six straight victories from mid-June to mid-August made us promotion contenders. We played hardfought matches against Balcombe 3’s, Forest Row 3’s and Lingfield 4’s in particular, and secured good double victories against Ansty 3’s and Ardingly 2’s. All of the games were played in an excellent spirit and were a good advert for the friendly, yet competitive, Stoner League. I wish all clubs in our league a successful 2014 season, and hope to be able to report next year on back to back promotions – our aim this year. Success (coupled with our 1’s winning Div 2) breeds revived enthusiasm, so I close with the encouragement that if you can string together victories, former players, friends and players looking for a club will sit up, take stock of your achievements , dust off their kit and make themselves available – in the early part of 2014 (with no overrunning football, I will add) we have so far found availabilities to be far better which I put down to this.
