The use of TED talks, a non-profit website that showcases innovative thinkers and “doers” who are challenged to present their topics of interest in 18 minutes or less, was creative and engaging. This is slated to become an annual event. o Kudos were also given for Information Technology’s Eastern Shore Cyber Security Conference held on October 22. This was a collaborative effort between Salisbury University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Wor-Wic Community College, the City of Salisbury, and Perdue Farms. The objective was to help raise awareness about information security and to offer tips and information on current threats and protective measures that can be used. University Governance o Faculty Senate – Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Ragan i. The Faculty Senate is having discussions concerning merit pay and the faculty salary study. The issue of Merit Pay was sent to the Faculty Welfare Committee (FWC). ii. The Faculty Senate was asked for assistance in developing an alternative to the Fall Fusion program. A bylaw change had passed that formalizes how Faculty Senate policy recommendations are communicated to the Administration and Faculty and encourages the appropriate publication in the respective handbook or manual. o Adjunct Faculty Caucus – Tim Robinson i. While the Adjunct Faculty Caucus has been around for several years they would like to thank Dr. Dudley-Eshbach for allowing them a place on the President’s Advisory Team. o Staff Senate – Kimberly Meyer i. This annual event, sponsored by the SGA, challenges registered student organizations to compete against each other and other universities to determine which group is able to recycle the most by weight. iii. November 9 is the “I Love Salisbury” event. Students reach out to community members who are located near the campus to help with simple chores such as yard work. o Graduate Student Council – Tabatha Beck i. The Graduate Student Council continues to strive to increase participation from more Salisbury University graduate students in an effort to provide a forum that more broadly reflects concerns and needs of the group. ii. The Graduate Student Council has established a committee to discuss scholarships for SU graduate students. iii. A Graduate Assistant of the Month program is being considered. 3. Delmarva Public Radio – Dana Whitehair o Mr. Whitehair thanked Jason Curtin, Melanie Perreault and Diane Allen for their guidance and support in his first days at Delmarva Public Radio. He also thanked the Public Relations department for their timely and professional services. o The application to the Federal Communication Commission to transfer the broadcast license from the Salisbury Foundation to Salisbury University has been submitted. o The fall pledge drive held from October 10 through the 18 was successful and raised approximately $95,000. Mr. Whitehair encourages the SU community to also show their support if they haven’t done so by either calling the DPR office or on their website. o In an effort to manage costs there have been several program changes to the DPR format. Several SU programs, such as Research and Innovation Day and Showcase event and Bellevance Honors lecture, were recorded and will be edited and aired on future “Delmarva Today” episodes. o The physical transfer of the station to the East Campus has begun, and while this has been a huge challenge they have been working through each “mile post” and expect PAT Meeting October 24, 2013 Page 4 the process to be successful. o 4. Contract Report Entry Portal – T. Greg Prince o 5. 6. In an effort to manage information concerning SU’s donors, the Advancement team has developed a database that records contact conversations. The purpose is to create a permanent record and coordination of different meetings with donors. This electronic form is located at the bottom of University Advancements main webpage. In addition, emailing the information to Greg Prince or Jason Curtin is always an option. Sophomore Year Experience – Maarten Pereboom o Dean Pereboom reported on the progress of the Sophomore Year Experience program. This initiative was developed to look at challenges sophomore students are experiencing and determine where support is needed to foster a successful academic and social environment. o This initiative coincides with the second-year on-campus residency requirement. Students are now required to live on campus for four semesters. University Park is considered on campus for purposes of this initiative. o Based on student statistics and responses, it was discovered that Sophomores who lived on-campus attempted more credits, had higher grades, higher GPAs, and remained at the University for their junior year. This success was attributed to a cohesive experience fostered by the program and closer proximately to campus. Learning Management System Review – Simeon Ananou o 7. A steering committee has been formed and a primary goal is to explore ways to integrate DPR with the academic and cultural campus. DPR has also developed a relationship with University Station Alliance. This national not-for-profit support resource provides public radio and TV stations with resources and tools to help solve problems and improve operations. The University has used Blackboard software for a number of years, and the contract is up for renewal in 2015. Over the next few months research will be done on other software platforms to determine the best fit for Salisbury University moving forward. A determination should be made by spring on whether to stay with Blackboard or to purchase a different software program. This would allow for a year of training and migration of information from one program to another, if necessary. Maryland Charities Campaign – Amy Hasson, Jerrad Pawar and Isckar Bii o The Maryland Charity Campaign is a charitable giving program for state employees. The Salisbury University chapter of United Way is the first university student-based organization in Maryland.
