PG 251-252 – “IF YOU HAD BEEN ON THAT JURY, SON, AND ELEVEN OTHER BOYS…” What is Atticus wanting Jem to understand? This is a coming-of-age moment at the top of page 252: When Jem states that it doesn’t make it right, he is starting to reason with events on his own with the guidance from Atticus. Atticus states at the top of page 252, “They’re ugly, but those are the facts of life.” Is Atticus approaching this situation the right way? How do you all feel about “facts of life.” Are they always correct? PG 259 – LAST PARAGRAPH OF THE CHAPTER “I think I’m beginning to understand something. What are Jem and Scout starting to realize at the end of this chapter? What do you all think about Jem’s statement posted above? PG. 262 – THE CONCEPT OF BEING A GIRL How is Aunt Alexandra’s “campaign” going of making Scout act like a lady? Why do you think Scout says she wants to be a lady when she grows up? What are the ladies’ ideas on how a girl acts? Is most of it to do with what a girl wears? Think back to our beliefs discussion…do you all still believe the way you originally had? What has changed, if anything? What has stayed the same, if anything? PGS 268-END – TOM’S DEAD What was your reaction to this? Were you surprised? “Depends on how you look at it,” he (Atticus) said. “What was one Negro, more or less, among two hundred of ‘em? He wasn’t Tom to them, he was an escaping prisoner.” What do you all think about this? Why do you think Atticus wanted Cal to go with him to tell Helen about Tom’s death? Did you all agree with how Miss Maudie handled the situation by moving forward and not letting the other ladies know that anything was wrong? Explain why.
