JOB DESCRIPTION
SENIOR SECURITY OFFICER
(Security Operations)

Facilities Management.

Function of Post:
As a key member of the department to assist in ensuring the
provision of security and fire services in accordance with College Policy
and
Security
Standing Orders. To achieving a professional, customer orientated and value for money
service, by tactical supervision of junior staff, hands on involvement, training and efficient
administration.

Responsible to:
The Security Operations Manager

Direct Subordinates:
All security staff of a junior rank.
7.
Objective:
To work as a member of the departmental team for the
protection of persons and property on all College sites and thereby ensuring the provision of
a safe and secure environment conducive to the aims of the College community.
8.
Duties:
8.1
Planning, implementing and supervising security and safety patrolling activities to
ensure;
 The maintenance of good order on all College sites including the protection of
everyone therein against violent acts and accident.
 The protection of College property against loss, theft, damage, (including fire and
water) and waste.
 That basic and reasonable crime prevention measures are in place.
 The protection of private property belonging to staff, students and visitors against
loss, theft and damage.
 That offences against the Law of the Land, College Disciplinary Codes and
Policies are investigated and brought to the attention of the relevant authority.
 That basic fire precautions are in place and means of escape are clear.
 The monitoring of health and safety issues reporting transgressions and defects
accordingly.
8.2
Planning, implementing, supervising and responding to;
 First Aid Emergencies.
 All Fire Alarms and related Emergencies.
 Bomb Alerts and all other types of related emergencies.
 All other types of incidents (e. gas leaks, floods, defective lifts, accidents etc.).
 Intruders and other criminal related incidents.
 Incidents of Public Disorder and Affray etc.
Providing in all cases assistance in accordance with instructions and training.
8.3
Planning, implementing, supervising and performing investigations;
 The post holder will be required to investigate and supervise the investigation of all
types of incidents providing comprehensive reports and statement in accordance
with Security Instructions, Criminal Law, Employment Law and training.

Ensuring that all relevant Operational administrative duties are professionally and
efficiently implemented and maintained, in accordance with departmental policies
and instructions.

Ensuring the maintenance of good staff discipline by;
 Good communication at all levels.
 Positive and compassionate counselling.
 Dealing firmly with any discriminatory attitudes/behaviour.
 Implementing disciplinary action as required.
 Promoting equality of opportunity
All in accordance with College Policy and Procedures.

Assist with the staff training in both the theory and practical aspects of all the security
functions required of the services;

 Identifying learning opportunities.
 Supporting the implementation of new skills.
 Providing feedback on performance.
Monitoring the planning and implementation of ;




VIP visits to all College sites.
The provision of escorts for the movement of cash and valuables.
Lift and Intruder Alarm testing programmes.
The provision of Reception cover, as required, in buildings between the hours of
1800 – 0800 Monday – Friday and any time on Saturday and Sunday.
 Properly documented continuity and safe keeping of found property and it’s
subsequent disposal.
 The policing of car park activities and assistance with associated duties as
required.
8.8
Carry out in a professional and diligent manner all other duties properly assignable to
the post.

Other Duties
 To observe and comply with all College policies and regulations, including the key
policies and procedures on Confidentiality, Standing Orders, Conflict of Interest,
Business Continuity, Data Protection, Equal Opportunities, Ethics related, External
Interests, Financial Regulations, Health and Safety, Imperial Expectations (for new
leaders, managers and supervisors), Information Technology, and Smoking.

Experience
 Experience in a supervisory role in a similar security-based environment.
Knowledge
 Be computer literate and demonstrate the ability to use Microsoft Word, Outlook
Express for email, Excel. Training on Lenel Access Control will be provided.
 Be knowledgeable and experienced in general security roles, responsibilities,
patrols and types of incidents.
Skills
 Good communicators, both verbally and in writing, ideally with experience of dealing
with the general public.
 The ability to present written information clearly and concisely using appropriate
structure and layout.
 Good interpersonal skills
 Be able to take prompt and well-informed first line decisions in order to maintain the
confidence of clients.
 Able to remain calm under pressure especially when dealing with difficult situations.
 Ability to plan and prioritise
 Possess staff motivation skills
 Be strongly customer focused
 Able to deal with sensitive and confidential matters appropriately at all times
 Be confident in dealing with difficult situations and incidents and the ability to use
tact and diplomacy to supervise and deal with staff, including senior staff, students

Other Requirements
 Full clean manual driving license
 Officers must undertake the standard 4 day First Aid course and maintain the
subsequent qualification.
 Officers must be capable of carrying and using all security equipment necessary to
efficiently discharge the duties of a professional Security Officer in the College
environment.
 Officers will be required to gain Security Clearance from the Office of Civil & Nuclear
Security (OCNS)






Officers must undertake the standard 4 day First Aid course and maintain the
subsequent qualification.
Officers must undergo regular theoretical, practical and physical training in all
security, fire and first aid functions to a standard acceptable to the College. They will
also be required to attend regular HR training to ensure departmental compliance
with College Policy and Employment Law
A consistently smart appearance in the uniform provided and required by College
An excellent level of fitness to enable the post holder to perform all of the functions
of the post
Adherence to Security Standing Orders
As this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a satisfactory
(standard/enhanced/enhanced for regulated activity) Disclosure and Barring Service
check will be required for the successful candidate.
