Instructor: Monica Lawrence
Art room 4
Drawing Syllabus
This class will challenge your current understanding of what drawing is. You will experiment with various methods of
constructing drawings, build your skills in drawing from observation, and make a wide range of artwork. Students will
learn how light and color affects both the artist and the viewer’s perception of a subject. Student will be required to
keep a sketchbook and participate in a competition.
Objectives:
1. Students will understand that drawing is an activity which involves learning to see and develop observational skills
and a refinement of drawing skills using the hands and art materials.
2. Students will understand that the making of arty may involve many techniques and different materials, but drawing is
a basic skill that will enhance your ability to work in other mediums and techniques.
3. Students will understand the elements and principles of design, as well as be able to apply this understanding to the
design, creation, and evaluation of artwork.
4. Students will be able to work in a cooperative and collaborative manner with other students, school officials, and
teachers.
5. Students will appreciate the work of others, and respect the workspace of others.
6. Students will complete assignments according to content objectives, demonstrating a positive attitude, good
craftsmanship, and respect for tools and equipment.
Supplies:
Drawing supplies are expensive. Students will be expected to have the following supplies by the end of the second week
of school. These items can be bought at any art store such as Michaels, Jerry’s Artarama and Hobby Lobby, office supply
stores such as Office Depot and Office Max, and superstores such as Target, Wal-Mart, and HEB.
2 drawing fine tip pens in black-sharpie pens(not markers) are an example of the type of pens wanted

Students will be provided materials that tend to be more expensive. Items such as color pencils sets, scratchboard tools
and exacto knives will be numbered and assigned to students for their use during the class period each day. The
students assume responsibility for using his/her assigned set at the beginning of the period and returning it to the shelf
at the end of the class. This will count as part of the clean up and class participation portion of the grade.
Name, grade and class hour must be written legibly on the front cover of the sketchbook and binder. Name must be
written in permanent marker on the smock.
You will also be required to purchase or bring in from home items as needed to complete the projects you create. We
will be designing precise plans of the pieces you intend to make in order to keep the cost down per student.
I will lend you a SET OF SUPPLIES. You need to keep track of the items lent to you OR YOU WILL BE FINED BEFORE
YOU LEAVE CLASS. All fines must be paid before graduation.
During the course of the year the class requires special items. If you have any of these things lying around at home and
care to bring them in you may extra credit points. These items are:





Newspaper
Plastic butter/cool whip containers
cardboard, flat minimum size of 12x18
Kleenex to share with the class

100% cotton t-shirts
Attendance:
Good attendance is important!
The teacher presents most information through presentations, explanations and demonstrations.
Student should take notes in their sketchbooks; additionally there will be some handouts provided to do
things outside of class. When the student is absent, this information is lost and cannot be regained easily
because there is not an official textbook.
A copy of the syllabus is on my web page as well as in the classroom binder/textbook that the students
use in class. This course involves critiques and presentations, which rely on group involvement;
therefore the overall success of these activities is dependent upon everyone’s involvement.
Many class assignments require direct observation of still life or controlled lighting conditions that exist
in the classroom. Such assignments cannot be done satisfactorily from imagination at home.
Absence:
The nature of this course, which depends almost entirely on studio hours, makes it mandatory
that you attend every day. Each class hour missed (including excused absences and fieldtrips)
should be made up in the art room in order to regain the working time missed and maintain the
quality of work produced.
Students wishing to make up absences or wanting special help should talk to the teacher to
schedule a time to come in and work. Normal studio hours after school are 4:15 – 5:30 unless
other obligations require the teacher’s presence elsewhere in the building, there is a list
located on the wall near the door to the classroom and on the teacher web page to inform
students of days when the room/teacher will not be available.
It is the absentee’s responsibility to arrange with the teacher for make up of missed assignments
promptly. School policy allows one day of make up time for each day of excused absence.
Students will not be allowed make up time for unexcused absences. After two weeks an
assignment will no longer be worth points.
Grading:
Grading will be based on attitude, effort, individual improvement, completion of work
demonstrating good craftsmanship and design, completion of written assignments, test scores,
participation in critiques, attendance, record of tardies and studio clean up. A good attitude and
cooperation are essential to being successful in this class and to achieving a passing grade. Any student
who wishes to spend additional time in the studio to work may do so with the permission of the
instructor.
A grade scale is normally given for each assignment so the students understand how the points for the
assignment fall on the grade scale.
Students who turn in late work will be deducted points for each day an assignment is late.
*** If a question on a grade arises, the student is expected to approach the teacher in a calm and
respectful manner to discuss the situation. If the student fails to do this, the teacher has the right to
deny a change in grade and may send the student to the office or give a consequence if he or she gets
unruly.
All assigned work should be signed and dated in the conventional manner for ART (on the back side,
bottom right corner with date). Each assignment must be signed and dated for the grade to be
recorded.
Expectations:
A
Seating – Students are assigned seats for several reasons from taking attendance to involvement
in the cooperative learning experiences. Everyone is expected to be in his or her assigned seat
during presentations so the teacher can orderly present material for projects. Students who
refrain from doing this, and are disruptive, will have points deducted from their class
participation grade
B
Clean Up – Part of your grade involves cooperation in maintaining an orderly and efficiently
clean studio. Clean up will begin ten minutes prior to dismissal. NO ONE WILL BE EXCUSED TO
LEAVE UNTIL ALL THE AREAS ARE CLEAN.
These areas are:
tables
counters
sinks
storage of cleaned tools and materials
Responsibility for all these areas will be shared. A duty roster will be posted. It is the
responsibility of the student to write down the day/s they have a clean up duty so their clean up
grade is not lowered. Clean up days per individual will vary depending on the number of days in
the quarter and the number of students in the class. The teacher assigns duties randomly and
tries to be as fair as possible.
C
Effort –
1. Consistent effort is expected and required. Non-productive students have a
negative impact on overall class productivity. Any student who is not working
during a class period will be reminded of the importance of utilizing class time as
work time. If there is no effort by the student upon the third reminder, the student
will be asked to leave the room and report to the High School Office and the student
may be given a teacher detention that needs to be served at the discretion of the
teacher. Repeated referral to the High School Office may result in the student being
dropped from the class.
2. Using class time to complete homework from other courses is only acceptable when
all required class work is completed to the best of the student’s ability and up to
date. Students who complete other coursework during this class, when their
projects from this class are not finished, will have their work confiscated.
3. Students are expected to have the assigned supplies, a folder, a pencil, and their
sketchbook in class each day.
4. The computers in the classroom are off limits to students unless permission is given
to the student by a teacher. Printing materials from the art department printer is
off limits unless permission is obtained from the teacher. Violators will receive an
appropriate consequence. There is also a sign up sheet hanging on the wall by the
computers.
5. Food/Beverages, other than water, are to be left outside the classroom, as they are
a distraction from the learning environment. The food/beverage items may also be
hazardous, as there are materials in the classroom that if combined and consumed
with food/beverages could be toxic to the student.
6. Electronic items such as phones or mp3 players may be used for MUSIC DURING
WORK TIME ONLY. You MUST be able to hear the teacher if the instructor asks for
your attention. Using these items for other things such as texting, calling
someone, or watching any video or other distraction will result in the confiscation
of the item in question and will be given a consequence by the main office. This is
your warning.
7. Students are expected to be respectful of themselves, peers, the teacher, the
administration and any artwork anywhere in the school and during special activities.
Respect means a lot of things to different people; we will be discussing this more in
depth in the next few days.
8. Students expecting a grade of “A” are expected to constantly challenge themselves
beyond the minimum work assigned.
9. Students are expected to listen to the directions for a given assignment the first
time. Failure to listen and ask questions when the information is presented will
result in an appropriate consequence.
10. Students are expected to work on art projects/assignments while patiently waiting
for teacher assistance with problems on assignments. Refusal to wait one’s turn
and acting younger than one’s age will result in the forfeiture of help that class
period.
D. Passes
1. Students may come in to work during study hall or after school. (There is a sign up
sheet near the teacher’s desk that must be signed for correct attendance. Teachers
will not excuse students who were not on this list.)
2. If students wish to come in after school students MUST check with the instructor to
make sure the room will be open and that teachers are available for help BEFORE the
day they want to come. Students who ignore this rule will be denied help and turned
away until the teacher is available.
