Station 6
Rebecca Nurse was a woman in Salem who was accused of
witchcraft. The History Channel video recounted that this
particular accusation was shocking because Rebecca was known as
one of the most pious women in Salem.
TASK:
Read “Testimony and Examination on Rebecca Nurse of Salem,
1692.” This is a primary source, which means that it was written during the
time period. This is the actual testimony that Ann Putnam gave in court when
Rebecca, among others, was accused of witchcraft. Pretend like you are a
lawyer defending Rebecca. On your notes sheets, write down
what you would say in response to the testimony. Remember, you
need to prove Rebecca INNOCENT. Your response should be at least 3
to 5 sentences long.
Note: “Apparition” means a ghost or ghostlike image of a person.

Station 7
TASK:
Browse through images included here depicting Salem,
Massachusetts, in 1692.
Choose one of the following characters:
 A woman of African descent working as a
nanny/housekeeper for a white family
 A minister’s wife who is curious about
witchcraft, but knows it’s forbidden
 A minister’s wife who is strictly against
witchcraft and all the evils lurking in Salem
 A man, the minister of Salem
Based on these images and on what you know already about the
town during that time period, write a diary entry describing a
day in the life of your character. Make sure to take on the
character of your person as much as you can (i.e. talk like
him/her, act like him/her, etc.). Make up and include at least one
specific occurrence or event in your day.
