See upper and lower division undergraduate course definitions .
3. College: CEFNS 4. Academic Unit: Mechanical Engineering
5. Current Student Learning Outcomes of the course.
1. Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering
–
(you will apply your knowledge of mathematics, and to a lesser extent physics and chemistry, in solving engineering problems).
2. Ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems – (you will solve many homework problems that relate to engineering and the project will have you solve an engineering problem).
3. Recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning – (you will discover that the field of materials is rapidly changing, and thus realize the need to continue your learning long after graduation).
4. Ability to design and conduct experiments as well as to analyze and interpret data – (as part of the project, you will do some experimental work and analyze and interpret results).
5. Ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools, such as computers, necessary for engineering practice – (you will learn to apply computer programs as well as write your own programs for engineering problem solutions).
6. The broad education necessary to

understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global/societal context – (you will be given examples from outside of mechanical engineering which will highlight the relation between mechanical engineering and other fields and the necessity to understand the global/societal context).
7. Knowledge of contemporary issues as related to the mechanical engineering profession, including engineering economic issues – (you will be learning about a field which is relatively recent).
6. Current title, description and units . Cut and paste, in its entirety, from the current online academic catalog * http://catalog.nau.edu/Catalog/ .

7. Justification for course change.
The pre-requisite status of the MAT362 course is too restrictive, hampering unnecessarily some students’ enrollment in the course. Given the structure of the course, and the fact that numerical homework problems, as well as the project, get to be assigned after almost half of the semester has passed, it is possible to allow students to take the MAT362 course concurrently and be able to complete the assignments in this course. At the time the course
was proposed with the current pre-requisites, it was not obvious that some students could have the option to take the MAT362 concurrently.
8. Effective BEGINNING of what term and year?
