7. Justification for course change.
COM 101:
This minor word change deletes the artificial distinction between language which is spoken
and language which is written. Verbal communication is symbol- and rule-based language.
“Oral” is spoken language, and “written” is written language. Both “oral” and “written” are
part of verbal language. This also better represents the School of Communication
organizational structure. “Media” suggests a mechanistic approach to communication which
is misleading, and may inadvertently exclude certain disciplinary areas. “Sub-disciplines”
presents a more unifying approach to communication in keeping with the organizational
structure of the School of Communication. All areas in the School of Communication use
media, but media is not the primary organizing principle for the academic areas.
COM 200:
This is a minor word change. One sub-discipline in the School of Communication recently
changed its name to Communication Studies. This course is required for all students in the
Effective Fall 2012
School of Communication, and the word change better reflects the fact that the course is
useful for all School of Communication students regardless of their major.
COM 301:
The current language is both outdated and insensitive. Changing “men, women” to “gender”
allows for a discussion of gender as a spectrum rather than as a binary. This reflects current
research and is more inclusive of the LGBTQI+ community. Changing “members of minority
or "marginalized" groups” to “race, ethnicity” allows for a discussion of whiteness in addition
to groups that previously were described as racial minorities. It also allows for the
differentiation between race and ethnicity. “Other social positions” accommodates potential
shifts in language that we may not currently anticipate.
