Sociology 1 Sociology Mr. O’Connor Room C-5 330-673-9591 This course focuses on the systematic understanding of social interaction, social organization, social institutions, and social change. Major themes in sociological thinking include the interplay between individuals and society, how society is stable and changing, causes and consequences of social inequality, and the social construction of human life. Understanding sociology helps discover and explains social patterns and how these patterns change over time and in different settings. Sociology develops critical thinking by revealing the social structure and processes that shape diverse forms of human life. A notebook and/or binder 2. A folder 3. Pencil and/or Pen (black or blue ink only) 4. Your textbook 5. A book cover for your assigned textbook (only if you are issued one) 6. Colored pencils and/or crayons (we will occasionally use these to fill in maps, charts, etc.) 7. Study tools: these are items that enable you to learn our content. If you like using notecards or Study Blue to go over vocabulary and other facts then do so!! These are the items that are helping you learn! 8. Come with a good attitude and willingness to learn!! Assignments: All assignments are due on the due date. No exceptions. Penalties do incur on Late Work. Please turn in work in the appropriate in box provided at the beginning of class! Late Work: Any assignment turned in late will automatically drop ten points everyday it is late. Hall Passes: You have to have your student planner with you, signed by me, to allow you to leave my class for any reason (such as going to the restroom). Your student planner is your hall pass. You are not allowed to borrow someone else’s student planner if you do not have yours!! Sociology 3 Students must sign out on the provided sheet indicating the time you are leaving the room, your destination, and the time you come back. Remember to take your hall pass with you. You only have three passes per semester, so make the most of your time! Technology: The school has provided a computer(s) for students to use during our class sessions in the media center, therefore, there is no need to purchase anything for this course. However, if you have your own technology and you are allowed to bring it to class, you may use it. Students are EXPECTED to follow all school guidelines for Computer Technology, Networking, and Cell Phone usage (The guidelines can be found in the Student Code of Conduct). All of these guidelines will be enforced. I reserve the right to take away your device if you are using it improperly in my classroom! Other considerations: I do not allow cellphone usage -- taking calls or texting in my classroom. You can do that on your own time. YOU are responsible for yourself! This includes any electronic device. It is not my responsibility to look after your devices. If you have left a device in my room, I will turn it into the office. Do not seek out another teacher, staff member, or custodian to open my room to retrieve your device. You may only see me in a case such as this. The use of ear buds or headphones is prohibited. This is Sociology class, not music appreciation class!
