How will my transfer courses fulfill Edgewood’s requirements? a. The general rule is that the Registrar will review students’ transcripts to see which ones fulfill the college’s general education Foundations requirement. A students’ advisor will then review your Transfer Credit Evaluation to determine what courses may be used to fulfill the requirements for your major. b. Major requirements vs. college requirements: Students must complete all the Foundation of Communications and Foundations of Human Learning requirements AND the specific courses required by their major in order to earn their degree. Therefore, for example, even if you have completed your F4 Social Science requirement with transfer credit, you may still need to take another F4 Social Science because it is required by your major. So, if you have met the F4 Social Science requirement through a psychology course, you may still need to take economics (another social science) to fulfill the requirements for the business major. For more information . . .If you have questions about courses that did not transfer or courses that did not fulfill Foundations requirements, contact Cindy Chriest in the Office of the Registrar at cchriest@edgewood.edu and be prepared to bring in a course description from your previous college’s catalogue or a syllabus for the course. If you have questions about how transfer courses fulfill major requirements, contact your academic advisor. 2. What are my options for completing the college’s F5 Foundation science requirement? All students must fulfill the F5 Foundations science requirement in one of two ways: 1. By completing an F5 science sequence (i.e. BIO 151F5 and BIO 152F5). No minimum credit requirement. 2. Two science classes with labs (i.e. BIO 151 and CHEM 120) and one additional science (i.e. GEOS 301). The additional science does not require a lab or a credit minimum. 3. How long will it take me to graduate? Planning is the key to graduating “on time.” First, be sure to get a copy of your Degree Requirement checklist and meet with your advisor to review your Foundations and transfer equivalencies in the major, so you know what requirements you have yet to fulfill. You are also encouraged to meet with your academic advisor(s) to do an individualized Major Academic Plan (MAP), so you can map out how many credits you will need to take each semester and in what order you should take courses. This will give you a good picture of how long it will take to complete your degree. For more information: Sample MAPS, blank MAP worksheets, degree checklists and other academic planning tools are available online at the Virtual Advising Center. College requirements and policies are also explained in the College Catalog. 4. How do I get started on the Human Issues requirement? Human Issues is a college requirement for all students beyond the Foundation course requirements. Students who’ve earn 60 credits need to start planning for their Human Issues Study. The Human Issues requirement cannot be fulfilled with transfer credit because it is unique to Edgewood College, relates to a student’s own sense of values and priorities, and often involves experiential, off-campus learning. This requirement can be fulfilled by taking a Human Issues Seminar on a specific topic (HI 404 or HI 305 and 405), or through independent study. In order to fulfill the requirement, you will need to earn at least three credits. The Human Issues Office can help you determine how best to fulfill the requirement in a way that meets your interests. The office also holds general information sessions each semester. For more information....contact the Human Issues Office staff at humanissues@edgewood.edu or visit the HI website 5. How do I register for classes each semester? curriculum Edgewood College has two registration periods: one in April for Fall and Winterim and one in November for Spring and Summer. Each semester, in March and October, you will receive a letter from the Registrar’s Office notifying you of your date and time to register during the upcoming Priority Registration period. These are sent to your campus mailbox or local address or parents’ address, depending on what you’ve designated as your mailing address. Once you receive your priority registration notification, you must make an appointment to see your academic advisor to review your progress toward their degree. Once you’ve met with your advisor, he or she will release your advising “hold,” enabling you to use EdgeReg at your priority registration date and time. For more information . . .See the “Using EdgeReg” and “General Information” sections on EdgeReg. 6. How can I stay informed about campus events and resources at Edgewood College? If you are a new student, attend Transfer Orientation before classes start. It’s the best way to become familiar with Edgewood’s services and resources. Visit the Technology Assistance Center located in the library to get a student ID card, Edgewood computer access information and an Edgewood e-mail address. Check your e-mail regularly, as instructors often send students messages. Also, when you log onto My.Edgewood, you will find important campus information, including campus-wide announcements, events, activities and resources. 7. How do I sign up for placement testing and learn more about proficiency testing? First, take a look at your Transfer Course Evaluation to see what placement testing you need. The Math and English placement tests are offered numerous times throughout the year. The dates are listed in the “General Information” section on EdgeReg. Because our placement tests are keyed to our courses, we can’t use other schools’ placement test results. Some students want to “test out” of certain requirements. Edgewood offers proficiency tests for the following courses: ENG 110 College Writing, PHIL 101 Logic: the Practice of Critical Thinking, COMMS 101 Speech , MATH 101 Problem Solving and MATH 114A. Registration for the English placement and math placement tests can be found on EdgeReg. The College Writing, Logic, Math 111 and Speech proficiency tests are scheduled through the Academic Dean’s Office. Call 663-2200 for guidelines sheets and to register. For the Math 101 proficiency test, contact the Chair of the math department for more information. 8. How do I apply for financial aid? Transfer students are eligible for some of Edgewood’s scholarships, as well as outside loans. These are described on the Edgewood Financial Aid webpage. Students should first complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form, available in paper copy at the Office of Financial Aid, 210 DeRicci Hall, or online at the Financial Aid webpage or at the U.S. Department of Education. 9. How do I get approval to take courses elsewhere and transfer them back to Edgewood? Students who plan to take courses at other institutions must have those course pre-approved for transfer by Edgewood’s Office of the Registrar. This is important if you want to take a course elsewhere to fulfill an Edgewood Foundations or major requirement. A Request for Transfer form is available at the Office or on the Registrar’s Office website under the “Forms” section. For more information . . .contact Cindy Chriest in the Office of the Registrar at cchriest@edgewood.edu 10. What’s the availability of campus housing? Housing on campus is tight, so the key is to get your application in as soon as possible. In addition to residence halls, there is an on-campus apartment building (Weber Hall). For more information....contact Claire Mand in the Dean of Students Office at cmand@edgewood.edu or the Edgewood Housing website. 11. I still have other questions! Your best bet when you have questions is to contact your academic advisor. If he or she cannot answer your question, that person will be able to refer you to the appropriate office. Be advised: Getting to know your academic advisor will enable him or her to help you achieve your academic goals.
