The Mycenaean Civilization was located on Mainland Greece and flourished from 1400-1100 B.C.E. The
Mycenaean’s gained most of their power through trade. They eventually defeated the city of Troy and
burned it during the ground during the Trojan War. The story of the Trojan War and events that followed
are found in the epics the Iliad and the Odyssey written by Homer. Myceneanan Civilization collapsed with a
drought and widespread famine (people were struggling to find food to eat and survive).

time?
Some of the Greek City-States changed over time to meet the needs of their people. Eventually some citystates such as Athens realized that a government ruled by one person or a select few were ineffective in
helping out the majority and so they developed democracy. The ability for more people to be involved in
government was very appealing to the masses (majority of the people). Democracy was established with
widespread popularity and became very successful in certain parts of Greece.
