BIOL B33 Human Anatomy and Physiology II (4 units)
This is the second part of a two-semester integrated anatomy and physiology course that
covers the principles of human anatomy and physiology, emphasizing the integration of
structure, function, and maintenance of homeostasis. Topics include the following systems:
nervous (CNS), endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic/immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary
and reproductive. Both BIOL B32 and BIOL B33 must be taken to study all the major body
systems. This series meets the diverse needs of students seeking careers in such allied
health fields as nursing, pharmacy, and physician’s assistant. Prerequisite: BIOL B32 with a
grade of “C” or better; Reading - 1 level prior to transfer. Hours: 54 lect, 54 lab. Offered: F, S.
CCS: Liberal Arts and Sciences. Transferable: UC, CSU and private colleges. BC GE B.1;
CSU B.2, B.3; IGETC 5.B. Note: The completed BIOL 32/33 series is identified as C-ID115S
amongst colleges in California.

Student Learning Outcomes – BIOL 33 (A&P II)
(What you should be able to do when you finish this course.)
1. Name each of the systems of the human body, their general functions, the major organs
that make up these systems, and the general contribution each organ makes to the system.
2. Using models, be able to locate and identify body organs and structures as well describe
as their physiologic functions.
3. Identify microscopically and describe the structure and basic function of the tissue and cell
types, which make up the major organs of the human body, and discuss the structure and
function of major organelles and the plasma membrane of mammalian cells.
4. Use anatomical and directional terminology to identify body parts, positions, cavities,
planes, and sections as commonly used in medical practice.
5. Use body surface anatomy to locate and identify deeper organs and their structures.
6. Apply anatomy and physiology to selected medical conditions using case studies and
describe in detail selected homeostatic imbalances of the organ systems.
7. Learn and practice accepted safety procedures for the laboratory.
8. Learn and practice study and problem solving skills in a group as well as individually.
9. Retrieve, evaluate, and use information regarding the human body and medicine to make
informed decisions about issues relevant to your everyday lives and the world.
10. Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to properly use basic laboratory equipment,
including dissection instruments, laboratory computer software, and microscopes.

Fulks, P. Lecture Notes for Human Anatomy & Physiology – Biology 33.

Required for dissection: 3 pair of latex gloves. Lab safety goggles (provided). Note:
Dissection of a fetal pig is NOT an optional assignment.

Prerequisites: Passing Biology 32 with a grade of C or better; Reading level 5-6

Attendance: Missing more than 2 lec/lab sections will result in being dropped from the
class. State Ed. code requires a minimum number of in-class hours.

Habits: Review science material immediately after classes always expecting a quiz the
next class session. Quizzes are unannounced but Exams are scheduled as in syllabus:
No makeup exams or quizzes. Drop 1 lowest or missed quiz.

Assignments: Due at the beginning of class. No late papers accepted but you can
drop the 2 lowest or missed lab scores.

Cheating policy: Don’t. The work you submit must be original to receive any points.
Students implicated in cheating will be given “0 points” for that assignment or exam
and referred to student government for discipline. Note: Assignments given out as
“clinical team or group work” would expectedly share common elements in answers
amongst individuals in the group.
Students with disabilities who believe they need accommodations in this class are
to contact. Supportive Services at 395-4334 as soon as possible.

Habits of Mind
http://www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/habits-of-mind/
We want you to succeed in this class and at BC. Success takes energy, planning, and
strategies for both the expected challenges in school as well as the unexpected twists life can
take. Many of you will face obstacles that threaten your academic goals this semester. Many
of these challenges may seem beyond your control. They are not. You may not always be
able to control what happens in your life, but you can determine your reaction, your planning,
and your priorities. What determines success is not circumstance, but habit. People who
succeed in life don’t do so because they face no challenges, rather they overcome the
destructive things in their lives because they empower themselves with good habits.
Bakersfield College and the Habits of Mind Initiative, It’s POSSIBLE at BC, worked
to create many tools intended to help you develop the empowering habits that will enable you
to overcome the challenges you face. They are free and available to you; ask for help, and do
the work. Refuse to quit. Ultimately, only you can change your life. We’re trying to empower
you to do so. Visit our website or ask your professor for information about Habits of Mind:
