ECB/ESCA U15 FINAL TUESDAY 7TH JULY 2015, OAKHAM SCHOOL
This turned out to be one of the most exciting matches in recent years but I get ahead
of myself.
Manchester Grammar School won the toss and elected to bat. They very quickly lost
Perry for nought with the score on nought. Stevinson followed with the score on
nineteen. A stand between Pooler and Udwadia took the score to fifty four before
Pooler was out for eighteen. Hill fell quickly before Udwadia and Makin took the
score to one hundred and thirty two for five. Makin making thirty six.
Wickets fell at regular intervals – Manchester Grammar School making 162-7 with
Udwadia undefeated on an excellent seventy seven not out. Sherborne required one
hundred and sixty three for victory.
Bowling for Sherborne Pyman 1 – 38, Prest 2 - 27, Perkins 1 – 29. Sherborne also got
off to a tricky start with Prest falling for nought, with the score on one.
Palmer was batting well but lost Patten and Fisher for six and nought respectively,
the score being sixteen.
A stand of ninety seven then developed between Palmer and Pope taking the score
to one hundred and thirteen before Palmer was out for an excellent forty one – Pope
continued to bat well. Humphrey (Nineteen) and Rainbow (Ten) added valuable
runs with Pope. Pope was run out by Perry for a superb seventy six. Score one
hundred and forty three for seven. Twenty runs required Pyman followed at one
hundred and forty seven for eight. The match then built up to a very dramatic
ending. The ninth wicket fell at one hundred and fifty nine. Four needed with the
last pair at the wicket! With the last ball to be bowled Sherborne required one run to
tie and two to win.
Udwadia then bowled a superb Yorker bowling Perkins with the Sherborne score on
one hundred and sixty one.
Manchester Grammar School won by one run!
What a match and a credit to both teams.

We also beat the rain.
The ESCA Chairman (Mike Spinks) did the honours presenting the runners up
medals to Sherborne, the trophies for the scorers and umpires before presenting the
gold medals and the trophy to Manchester Grammar School.
Summary
We had another excellent week at Oakham. We owe thanks to Anna Bentley, for coordinating our stays to Richard Dexter, Mark and the ground staff, the catering
department, especially to two ladies who looked after us so well; Jack and Conrad
for all their help; to the umpires and scorers especially Eddie; to Dale the physio and
Julie Morton our photographer. What work they do.
To Dr Dave for all his invaluable support and joy at presenting the medals for his
competition and to Mike Spinks who presented trophies and medals with great
aplomb.
To David Farmer (U11 Hardball) and all the ESCA volunteers, Dennis Houghton,
Phil Evans, Graham Symons, Don Crawford, Harold Galley, Richard Young and
Richard Somerford. Me? I just enjoyed myself organising the Finals.
