Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D Personal Project Process Journal 21/9/2011 Today we all met together to talk about our personal project. They divided us into three groups. Then we had to choose an AOI for our project and I chose community and service and human ingenuity. I also organized my journal, I wrote every week’s date until we are supposed to hand in the journal (21/9/2011- 8/2/2012) 28/9/2011 I went to Mr. Holsten and asked him if I can do my own community and service and at the same time do it in another way as a personal project. He said yes and I started working from the minute he said it. I had many ideas but chose to work with orphans because I feel it is important that they feel included into society. This was an important decision has the whole world can be a family to orphans. -1- Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D 05/10/2011 On Thursday I wrote and submitted my goal. My goal was My personal project is to offer Dhrieama Orphanage support to help the orphans to develop and be empowered to face challenges and obstacles that they will meet in the future. In order to facilitate this I tried calling Qatar Charity to ask them about the top 5 countries that need financial support. I called The Main branch 4467711, 44594733, Al Rayyan Branch 44807128, Muaither Branch 441112801 but no one answered and I guess that’s because its Thursday afternoon, I will try calling them on Saturday/Sunday before 12:00pm They told me the top ten poorest countries these were, Somalia, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Pakistan. 12/10/2011 This week I was chasing Mrs. Maha my supervisor who made time to help me and provide support for my project, I nearly visited her every day sometimes twice a day. I was also chasing Mr.Holsten to write the letter and give it to me to be given on time Dhriema in. The process taught me to have seeking spirit, as I didn’t want to give up. It was a very difficult process to keep chasing people as every one has busy schedules. I decided to change the goal of the personal project because the personal supervisor told me that it was not a good idea to do two projects, as I would only be graded for one project. I had already raised the money for charity so I decided based on the information on the poorest countries to divide the money up equally. -2- Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D 19/10/2011 Dhriema replied that I can come to them and bring the letter from Mr. Holsten in at any day any time from Sunday-Thursday and from 7:30am -2:00pm. I think I will go tomorrow and make an appointment to start my project; this depends on Mother’s ability to come with me. 26/10/2011 I failed going last week to Dhriema but inshallah I will go this Wednesday or Thursday because Wednesday is a half school day and on Thursday we are off we don’t have school because of Eid’s holiday. Thursday 29/10/2011 I went to the Orphanage and I met, Mrs. Muneera Al-Bloushi, and I felt a little bit frustrated with what she told me. She told me that she’s sorry for telling me this, but they don’t have any volunteer work for now until after the spring holiday, and by -3- Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D that time we will be done with the personal project. After she told me this I had a feeling I don’t know what should I call this feeling, and I was a bit mad that she said ok to Mrs. Maha Al Rumaihi OK just send us an e-mail that says in it that there is a student coming for volunteer work, Mr.Holsten sent them an e-mail and I took the letter to them on Thursday. She gave me other places names that can help me, and I can work there. I called but no one answered a part from one which was the Elderly House and they told me that they are taking some old people to Hajj, and they can help me after the Eid holiday. 02/11/2011 I actually didn’t do anything about my Personal project this week, a part from thinking what should I do now for my personal project. 09/11/2011 I wrote my Community and service reflection which Mr.Holsten told even if I fail meeting my goal to make the orphanage one of the Community and services we have at school he will still give a mark on it because I tried soo hard to make this work but It didn’t and that wasn’t my fault it was the Orphanage. It was circumstances beyond my control. I still haven’t decided what I’m going to do, because the Eid holiday didn’t finish yet and I need to call and decide what am I going to do. 16/11/2011 Monday first day of school after the Eid break I met Mrs. Maha In the corridor and she asked about what happened and I told her everything. -4- Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D I also spoke with my advisory teacher Mrs. Fletcher and told her everything, I asked her if I’m supposed to re-write My goal or not and she told me no, I keep my goal the same and that’s because this was my true goal, and when we start writing our report I write the problems that faced me. 23/11/2011 I changed the whole idea, I decided to create a work week experience project for the school and this will be every year each student will chose a job to go work there for a week and try this job so in the future it will help them to decide what job they want, this could be also in groups. In discussion with the community and service coordinator Mr. Holsten, he told me that I don’t need to do the Week Work Experience, because now I reached my goal to make Dhriema one of the community and service choices here in Qatar Academy, but it will start after the spring holiday. Things he asked me to do to approve that the project Is successful is to make a big poster for the exhibition and that will include the e-mail that Mr. Holsten sent to Dhriema and the flyers that I was going to hang around the school to introduce the Community and service and I need to get a letter from Dhriema that explains that Mrs. Muneera Al Bloushi said to me that they do not have volunteer work right now but they will start it after the spring holiday. Theses things will approve that my project was successful. -5- Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D 30/11/2011 We had a discussion in advisory with Mrs Fletcher about our personal projects, she asked every single one of us to show her something on the next advisory class so she can be sure that were on task and we are up to date our projects. I showed her the picture. 07/12/2011 Mrs, Fletcher our advisory teacher asked me to show her next advisory class a design of the poster which will be my product, since dhriema said that the volunteer work will be after the spring holiday. Today I didn’t show Mrs. Fletcher the design because 3 of my friends and I were excused from the whole advisory lesson to video our Islamic project. So, Sunday next week I’ll be able to show her the design. -6- Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D 15/12/2011 Today first thing at the morning I went to the orphanage after I have called them many times and they didn’t answer. I asked fort Mrs. Muneera Al Bloushi and I was surprised that they told me she is travelling and she will be back by Sunday, and I can come back on Sunday after she’s back but while I’m writing this I realized that Sunday will be the National Day and they said this to end the conversation. I asked them to write me a note to explain that Muneera told me to come after the spring break for the volunteer work, because I don’t have a product to present on Wednesday, because of them and I was going to make a poster that has Mr.Holsten’s letter that he sent to Dhriema and Dhriema’s reply that I can come after the spring break for the volunteer work which was supposed to be the evidence that the product will be working after spring, but now I don’t have anything to present on Wednesday apart from Mr. Holsten’s letter, the goal and the journal and the design for the poster. I thought of creating a story book for Pre-school to be a product that I can show on Wednesday, but when I discussed this with Mrs. Fletcher the advisory teacher she told me that it will not work, but I’m going to write it and I’ll keep the goal as it is and I will write everything that happened to me that made me change the idea and write a story for pre-school. I wrote the story it was about home safety the title of the book is (STOP NOOO BAD!!) -7- Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D I wrote everything with capital letters to grab the kids’ attention and I also wrote it with kids language to make it easier for kids to understand. I just need to draw the pictures and print the book. Today I went to Mrs. Fletcher and showed her the story I wrote she told me that it was fine. I will go to her again during break to get permission to go to the primary school and get feedback from the pre-school teachers to edit it. I got a letter from Mrs. Fletcher and permission from Mr. swords to leave his lesson and go to the primary. The First class I went to was Mrs. Stafford’s class she liked what I wrote but she gave me another idea to do instead of doing this as a story book, do it as flash cards and translate it in Arabic so I will have the flash cards in 2 languages Arabic and English. She also told me that last week Dr. Khalid A.Alawi Al-Saadi from Hamad hospital came to present safety awareness flash cards to the pre-school, she gave me his coordinates -8- Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D Today I finished the flash cards, laminated them and its ready to present. Before I start working on the flashcards I did a plan template, for what will I write on each side. For the flashcards I have done them in both languages Arabic and English and I have translated everything by myself. At the beginning I used google translate but it messed up everything, it translated words with other meaning, therefore, I have went back and translated everything over. One of the parents asked to make more copies and disribute them in the pre-school side and give it to pre-school teachers. Something I have to do after the holiday is to give Mrs. Stafford the flash cards to upload them on the wiki. - 10 - Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D 21/12/2011 I haven’t worked on my personal project this week. 28/12/2011 I haven’t worked on my personal project this week. 04/01/2012 I edited my journal, and waiting to go to school next week, to know what should I do now from Mrs. Fletcher. 11/01/2012 This week I worked on my report. I completed the selection of sources and achieving the goal so I’m ahead now, because the rest have only did achieving the goal. I took permission from Mrs. Fletcher to go and talk with Mrs. Stafford about the personal project. When I went there I showed Mrs. Stafford the flashcards she was impressed, she - 11 - Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D told she will upload it to the pre-school 3 & 4 wiki but after she takes permission from the team leader/ Grade manager. 18/01/2012 Today I e-mailed Mrs. Stafford the flash cards, both Arabic and English. 25/01/2012 Mrs. Stafford e-mailed me that I had to remove the picture with the floating body and that I had to write a paragraph that introduces me and tells why would I like them to upload it on the wiki. 01/02/2012 I was e-mailing Mrs. Stafford all this week to edit the flashcards, she told me that they have uploaded the English version. - 12 - Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D 08/02/2012 Mrs. Stafford asked me to be in contact with Ms. Nora AlHajiri the head of Arabic, because she’s taking care of uploading the Arabic version of flashcards on the wiki. Her e-mail: nhajiri@qf.org.qa I sent her an e-mail introducing myself to her and informing her that the flashcards I made were for the personal project and I asked her if she could upload it to the wiki before the 14th of this month. She didn’t reply back to me but she sent the page numbers and the words I had to change to Mrs. Stafford and Mrs. Stafford sent them back to me. These were the changes I had to make, this laptop does not read Arabic that’s why the letters are separated. The first change was my name but I told Mrs. Stafford that this is the way it’s spelt. The rest were not spelling mistakes but she preferred these words instead of the words I used. In my point of view the words she chose were hard for pre-school students and the words I have used were easy for them to understand. - 13 - Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D I printed the flashcards so, I can give the pre-school teachers a copy each of both Arabic and English and distribute them in the pre-school area for parents. On Thursday the 9th of February I’m visiting Mrs. Stafford after school, and I will deliver the pre-school teachers the flashcards. I will also take screen shots of the e-mails between Mrs. Stafford and I, and will print them on a separate document from the journal. I will use them as evidence. I took the screen shots, I realized that the first few e-mails weren’t there I looked for them but didn’t find them even in the (PP) folder which I created for the personal project to save all the e-mails I have that has something to with the personal project there, to be more organized. I will probably take them from Mrs. Stafford if she still has got them. - 14 - Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D Thursday afterschool I went to visit Mrs. Stafford as I told her but didn’t find her, I found her classroom locked I found a teacher there asked her about Mrs. Stafford and she told me that she has left. The e -mails from my supervisor helped me to keep on task and to organize my work better. The communication via e -mail was invaluable as it saved a lot of time in the planning process and meant that my revisions to my product could be done quicker because of the speed at which my supervisor replied. Communication with my supervisor meant that I did not feel confused or lost when things went wrong with the first product and I could respond in immediately when it became obvious of that the first product was going to fail. At that point I felt depressed and the e- mail from supervisor renewed my motivation. I learnt from this process that communication was essential in running a project and that without it the milestones for completing certain elements of the product would not have been met. E- mails are an important tool in project management. (see appendix 1) The AOI task is evidence of thinking skills in the areas of health and social education and in the area of human ingenuity. The evidence for this is the creation of the flash cards after the first product failed. I felt that thinking outside of the box in order to come up with a second product has taught me an important life lesson to believe in myself and that I work well under pressure. It is important to be able to learn these social and personal skills because it will improve my performance in all my school subjects. The human ingenuity means that I know that I can develop and manage other projects. The social - 15 - Ghada Al Maadeed Personal project Grade 10D education has given me the ability to be able to find solutions that will make it easier for the preschool children to learn how to be safe in their communities. (see appendix 2) The web site was another important way of communication. Mrs. Stafford the pre-school teacher uploaded the flash cards on her wiki page and can be found on the pre school 3 & 4 wiki page. This was again important for the development of the second product The communication here on this web page had the affect that I felt my supervisor and I worked effectively as a team. It was with this communication that impressed me the most as I had been feeling lost at this point in time. It was an effective use of communication that essentially meant that I could complete my product on time. This was an invaluable tool without which I would have not been able to have done my second product. This web page is evidence of collaboration between my supervisor and myself to create a successful goal. (see appendix 3) - 16 -
