Muscles Muscle Attachment • Tendon (attaches muscle to bone)—white fibrous connective tissue made up of the protein called collagen • Muscle Origin- is the attachment site that doesn't move during contraction (proximal) • Muscle Insertions- is the attachment site that does move when the muscle contracts (distal) Muscle Movement Muscle contraction results in different types of movement. The particular movement is a direct result of the muscle attachment. Ex. Biceps performs flexion of the forearm as the forearm is moved Muscle Movement • There are around 640 muscles in the human body • When movement of a body part occurs, muscles work in groups rather than individually. • During that particular movement, individual muscles will play different roles depending on their origin and insertion. • Agonist- prime mover, is the muscle that is primarily responsible for the movement (contracts) • Antagonist- its action opposes that of the agonist (relaxes) • Synergist Muscles- a muscle which acts with another.
