Preparation for College Writing
B. Curriculum:
ENGLISH
C. Catalog Description:
A workshop/lecture designed course with
the aid of computer exercises and minimal
lecturing to prepare students for standard
college writing. Lectures and computer
lessons enable students to renew and
develop mechanical and organizational
skills through practice and critical thinking
to produce entry level college essays.
D. Duration of Instructional Periods:
One hundred fifty minutes per week
E. Academic Credit Hours:
15 weeks 3.0 non degree credits (3,0,0)
F. Suggested Text/Course Materials:
Pearson Longman readers (workbooks are
not appropriate) are required to obtain free
access to online lessons and tutorial services
on MyWritingLab.com. which includes
Smarthinking.
Some Suggested titles are:
Lynne Gaetz and Suneeti Phadhe . Writer’s
World: The Essay (with MyWriting Lab
Student Access Code Card) – Rhetoric
(Other Titles will be reviewed)
G. Course Outcomes:
At the end of the semester the student will
be able to:
1 Write an essay of at least five
paragraphs which demonstrates an
understanding of process.
2 Organize an essay with an introduction,
well-developed body paragraphs with
supporting points, and a conclusion.
3 Produce acceptable grammar and
mechanics in a paper.
4 Demonstrate mastery on each unit of
computer assisted learning activities for

writing correctness. Computer material
is tailored to each students needs.
Rewrite an essay which shows revision
of content or organization.

1. Measured by up to 10 essays.
2. Satisfactory completion of all assigned
computer exercises done in
MyWritingLab– grammar, usage,
mechanics – 25%
3. Three drafts reviewed by Smart
Thinking -15%
4. Three-Six completed faculty-graded
papers - 60%.
5. In class capstone assessment essay.
Students may pass from the class with 3
revised papers 2 of which must use
Smarthinking and graded B or better
plus an assessment essay common for
all students. In addition student must
complete all self paced assigned
computer exercises in MyWritingLab
and write a statement of why he should
complete the class early. (Programs may
change with new technology).

L. Library Resources:
Assessment will be conducted by
applying the Developmental Writing
Rubric to a final paper or written exam
as scheduled according to the
Developmental English Assessment
Plan
Library Center (LRC) site holdings and data
bases may be used for topic exploration and
orientation to search methods.
L. Topical Outline:
Language Awareness & instruction
with computer exercises as homework.
The writing process through in class essay
writing. Continue self-paced computer
exercises for grammar, usage, and
mechanics.
Paragraph construction – Instructor reviews
progress in the workshop essays.
Instruction in unity, clarity,
and coherence in short essays.
Peer discussion of student essays.
Students who finish 3-6 required essays and
computer exercises, and an assessment
essay with a grade of B or better may
discontinue further class attendance.
