Instrumental Music Standards and Objectives
Lead-Deadwood Schools
Level 1 Band (Beginning)
Standard 1: Performing
Students will:
- perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
B1.1-1 show proper instrument assembly, maintenance, hygiene and cleaning.
B1.1-2 display correct posture and instrumental playing techniques.
B1.1-3 keep a steady beat.
B1.1-4 echo rhythmic and melodic patterns.
B1.1-5 match pitches with good intonation and tone quality.
B1.1-6 develop personal productivity through practice habits.
B1.1-7 perform beginning level music.
B1.1-8 play an instrumental solo.
B1.1-9 play music containing harmony.
B1.1-10 sight-read a short melody.
B1.1-11 play melodies containing slurs .
B1.1-12 play notated melodies in Bb and Eb Concert major.
B1.1-13 play the Bb Concert major scale.
B1.1-14 play exercises that include single stroke rolls, five-stroke rolls, nine-stroke rolls, and
long rolls and flams (percussion only)
B1.1-15 play a variety of beginning percussion instruments, e.g. snare drum, bass drum and
cymbals (percussion only).
Standard 2: Creating
Students will:
- improvise melodies, variations and accompaniments; and
- compose and arrange music within specified guidelines.
B1.2-1 improvise using two or three pitches.
B1.2-2 create a response to a rhythmic pattern performed by the teacher.
Standard 3: Reading
Students will:
- read and notate music.
B1.3-1 interpret and play piano, mezzo-forte and forte with their symbols.
B1.3-2 read quarter, half, whole and eighth notes and rests in 2, 3 and 4 meter.
B1.3-3 identify the clef and the names of the lines and spaces.
B1.3-4 interpret the following: repeat sign, D.C. al Fine, D.S. al Coda, and multiple endings.
Standard 4: Listening
Students will:
- listen to, analyze and describe music; and
- evaluate music and music performances.
B1.4-1 identify by sound musical instruments used in beginning band.
B1.4-2 differentiate between good and poor tone quality.
B1.4-3 identify like and unlike musical phrases and/or sections.
B1.4-4 identify the changes between piano and forte.
B1.4-5 describe the method of tone production for brass, woodwind and percussion
instruments as it relates to the principles of sound production.
Standard 5: Understanding Relationships
Students will:
- understand relationships between music, the arts and disciplines outside the arts: and
- understand music in relation to history and culture.
B1.5-1 explore and perform folk songs and global music as presented in the method book.
B1.5-2 develop civic literacy through the study of patriotic selections
B1.503 discuss social responsibility through appropriate audience behavior.
