Drawings Provide two drawing samples, each done on a sheet of white paper measuring 16"x 20"
(40 cm x 50 cm).
drawing #1 | Create a drawing through a process of directly observing the forms, light, shapes and
relationships of something in front of you. You can choose any subject you wish—for example,
natural forms, landscapes or urban spaces, a group of objects (natural and/or manmade), someone
you know, and on and on....
Remember that the subject matter is merely a vehicle for observing relationships that work
together to build a compelling point of view and visual description.
This drawing must be done using either graphite pencil or charcoal.
drawing #2 | select one of the following options:
Create a drawing instrument or tool. Make a drawing with the instrument you have created. Send
the original drawing to us and upload an image or a video of the instrument with your portfolio in
SlideRoom.
Make a drawing of a bicycle
For Drawing #2, you may use graphite pencil or any dry (fixable) medium, a water-based medium
(such as ink, watercolor or gouache) or a combination. Do not use any oil-based medium or collage.
Remember that whatever medium(s) you choose, the surface must be stable and dry and you must
be able to fold the paper (see below) in order to mail it to our office.

same day. This gives the student 6 months earlier notice
(as compared to peers in other high schools) to consider

TIME LINES……
http://www.sva.edu/attendsva/undergraduate/admissionstimeline
PORTFOLIO
• Along with academic transcripts and the
statement of intent, the portfolio plays an
important role in the admission review process.
Portfolios are reviewed with the goal of
identifying the creative and technical skills,
abilities and potential of each applicant.
• A portfolio should reflect each individual's unique
art background and experiences. No portfolio will
ever be compared to another when assessing
admission eligibility.
PORTFOLIO
• The following applicants are required to submit a portfolio in digital
format (CD-R or on SlideRoom):
• All applicants who would like to be considered for scholarship
• All transfer applicants seeking credit for studio art classes
• SVA encourages applicants to submit digital portfolios online
at SlideRoom. Prints are also accepted, but a digital portfolio is
required if you would like to be considered for scholarship.
• An in-person portfolio review can allow you to meet the visual
portfolio requirement, but a digital portfolio is still required for
scholarship consideration and for transfer applicants.
• SVA will not accept personal URLs or websites in place of
aforementioned portfolio requirements.
PORTFOLIO
• Please follow the general portfolio requirments for your
portfolio if you are applying to the following departments:
• Advertising
• Animation
• Cartooning
• Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects
• Fine Arts
• Design
• Illustration
• Interior Design
• Visual and Critical Studies
DRAWING SAMPLES….
• Drawing samples are the most important part of the
portfolio for applicants to the majors listed. Please
include examples of drawing done from the direct
observation of live, three-dimensional situations. These
can include self-portraits (using a mirror for reference),
figure drawings, object studies, still lifes and
landscapes. (Two-dimensional references can be
included in a portfolio, but should be kept to a
minimum.)
• Painting, printmaking, drawing and/or collage work
that expresses the color sense of an applicant is
welcome.
3D AND COMPUTER ARTS
• Three-dimensional work that explores notions of
composition, light, form and/or spatial relations
should be submitted in digital format (CD-R) and
should include shots from multiple viewpoints.
• Design projects and computer-generated images
can be included but should be kept to a
minimum. Applicants with computer-based
interests are required to submit a portfolio that
demonstrates their drawing-from-observation
skills.
SKETCHBOOKS
• Sketchbooks offer important insights into the
creative process of an applicant. Applicants
are encouraged to include the most recent
sketchbook at the time of a portfolio review.
Advertising, Computer Art, Computer
Animation and Visual Effects, Fine Arts, Design,
Visual and Critical Studies
• Design projects and computer-generated
images are not recommended for inclusion in
Computer Art portfolios. However, applicants
that do submit this work should be careful
that it is not about what a computer program
can do but what an artist can do with a
computer program. It is recommended that
this type of work be kept to a minimum and is
submitted in conjunction with drawing,
painting, and/or sculpture.
ANIMATION
• Animation applicants should be careful not to
overload their portfolios with images of comic or
cartoon characters. Though character
development is essential to successful animation,
the ability to take objects (people, places, things)
that exist in the real, three-dimensional world
and place them (and make them move)
believably in the two-dimensional picture plane is
key at this point. This potential is better
demonstrated at the point of admission by direct
observation work.
Cartooning and Illustration
• Cartooning applicants are encouraged to share their
"professional" interests and abilities with the College.
Applicants who publish their own zines, create graphic
novels, or run their own strips should include these as part
of their portfolio. However, applicants should be careful not
to overload their portfolios with images of comic or cartoon
characters. Though character development is essential to
success in the cartooning world, the ability to take objects
(people, places, things) that exist in the real, threedimensional world and place them believably in the twodimensional picture plane is key at this point. This potential
is better demonstrated at the point of admission by direct
observation work.
INTERIOR DESIGN
• Examples of drafting, design, or digital projects
can always be included in a portfolio. However,
applicants must be careful that the work
submitted is not so much about what a computer
program can do but what the applicant can do
with a computer program. Applicants should also
be able to discuss the unique concepts behind
their design work. It is recommended that this
type of work be submitted in conjunction with
drawing, painting, and/or sculpture.
Photography and Video
• Photography and Video applicants should submit
10 to 20 photographs or videos. Applicants
submitting video work must also include at least
5 photographs in their portfolio. Portfolios may
be uploaded to SlideRoom or submitted on a CDR.
• Work that explores a cohesive theme or specific
idea across a series of images is recommended.
Portfolios should reflect an applicant's conceptual
interests as well as their understanding of
composition, light, form and space.
IN PERSON-PORTFOLIO REVIEWS
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Portfolio interviews are available on a limited basis. To schedule an appointment,
please check our availability here. On-campus portfolio reviews are not required
for admission.
During the application season (January through March), portfolio review
appointments are limited and only scheduled for applicants. Please plan
accordingly.
TIPS
Applicants should bring actual work to an interview or portfolio day event. Work
does not need to be mounted or matted. However, the care in which an applicant
presents and discusses his/her work can play an important part in a review.
Oversized work and three-dimensional work should be submitted in digital (CD-R)
or print format.
Sketchbooks can play an insightful role in a portfolio review. Applicants are asked
to limit sketchbooks to the most recent and complete book.
Actual portfolios will not be accepted by mail or drop-off and should only be
submitted at the time of an in-person review.
All application materials become the property of SVA and will not be returned.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The FAFSA should be filed as soon after January 1,
2015 as possible according to the following
priority filing dates:
New Students for Fall 2015 Semester - February
1, 2015
New Students for Spring 2016 Semester December 1, 2016
SUPPLIES
• Students must purchase their own supplies
necessary for their courses. Full-time students
should budget between $1,050 and $3,150 for
art supplies each year.

Payment Plans
• Students may choose to pay the annual cost of
tuition and fees in 10 monthly installments, 5
installments per semester. The agreement is for
the fall and spring semesters and payments begin
on August 1 and end on May 1. Students will be
asked to sign the Payment Plan Application and
Agreement Form. SVA offers this option free of
any interest or finance charge. There is a $200
processing fee for participating in the plan. SVA
will consider all financial aid awards when
calculating the payment plan, thereby reducing
the amount of the monthly installment.
Determination of Eligibility
•
Within two weeks of submitting the FAFSA, you will receive a
Student Aid Report (SAR) from the federal processor. The SAR will
report the information from your original application and the
resultant Expected Family Contribution (EFC). EFC is a figure
determined by the federal government based on your family's
resources, and is the minimum amount you and your family are
expected to contribute toward your education.
Your financial aid eligibility is based on your financial need. Financial
need is calculated by subtracting your EFC from your estimated Cost
of Attendance (which is also referred to as the Student Budget). The
Student Budget, or Cost of Attendance, comprises the yearly cost
for tuition and fees, as well as estimates for home
maintenance/living expenses, personal expenses, transportation,
books and supplies.
