This individual will be responsible for assuring that quality and reliability of new or enhanced designs are optimized and demonstrated and will lead the department to collaborate with Engineering during the new product development process by applying quality and reliability engineering methods to assure the quality and reliability of the design. The department also develops and executes tests plans to verify the quality and reliability of the design and effectiveness of the manufacturing process. The person will apply reliability principles and statistical knowledge to deliver robust product design and work in collaboration with the production quality and contract manufacturing teams to implement quality checks at appropriate points in the manufacturing process. This leader will provide quality and reliability engineering representation to the program teams during the new product development stage and will work collaboratively with Marketing and Engineering to develop product specifications and verify that the product designed meets those specifications. He or she is responsible for consulting with: engineering, procurement, quality, and manufacturing teams to identify and qualify critical components and suppliers. The Director of Quality Engineering is responsible for implementing quality/reliability techniques such as Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Design Of Experiments (DOE), fish bone diagrams, and Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action Systems (FRACAS) to assess failure modes and implement corrective actions to deliver superior product reliability. The ideal candidate for this position demonstrates technical leadership and clear understanding of the stage gate process to integrate quality and reliability engineering principles and product evaluation at each step to assure product robust design. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of design qualification documents in collaboration with the engineering teams. This expert will work cross-functionally and strategically with engineering and manufacturing teams to provide quality and reliability leadership during the new product development cycle and develop a strong relationship with the quality department in order to exchange knowledge to ensure a smooth transition into mass production and ongoing quality. Director of Quality Engineering The incumbent will be responsible for a group of highly motivated reliability and quality engineers, and quality testers; and the requisite performance reviews, continual coaching/mentoring and career development. To be effective in their function, the candidate needs to be able to perform well in a very dynamic work environment - balancing a wide variety of projects and work activities. Strong communication, technical knowledge, statistical expertise, managerial agility, organizational and documentation skills are required to fulfill the duties expected of this position. Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Requirements: Develop, verify, and validate quality and reliability requirements and standards applied to new product development and mass production Develop and execute design and process verification test plans and apply statistical methods to summarize, analyze and report data findings from testing Develops and applies reliability engineering methods such as DFMEA or Fault Tree Analysis to evaluate product reliability and risk assessment Develop and apply FRACAS to address failure modes and corrective actions during new product development process Assure reliability tests are well documented and procedures are periodically reviewed and published as required Integral participant on new product development teams and define specifications in collaboration with the engineering and marketing Participate as needed in supplier qualification visits. Define quality requirements for critical components and assure implementation of protocols in collaboration with supplier quality and procurement departments Develops and assures implementation of quality and reliability requirements for contract manufacturers in collaboration with contract manufacturing and quality teams Suggests testing protocols for engineering as part of component qualification Work with quality and contract manufacturing to assure proper quality checkpoints in manufacturing process Staff and develop team according to department technical needs Set up the goals and assigns responsibilities to team members in alignment with overall quality and contract manufacturing strategic initiatives Work innovatively and collaboratively with team by effectively managing associates, ensure each team member meets annual and quarterly goals and performs all duties as required Define quality and reliability metrics and communicate across several departments throughout the company and contract manufacturing sites Establish standard procedure formats and maintain library of current reviews for all reliability related testing that can be readily used by other internal teams or contract manufacturing as required Director of Quality Engineering Represent quality engineering in new product development program team meetings related to reliability or design verification testing, critical to quality components, test design, failure analysis and product design reviews Produce specific reports to evaluate or summarize tests or related technical activities to communicate technical findings to Senior Management team with focus on risk assessment Foster cross functional working relationships to promote product quality, robustness, and reliability Bachelor of Science degree required, (Masters of Science preferred) with a concentration in Electrical, Systems or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent coupled with applicable design or quality management experience. Materials Science and/or Mechanical Engineering experience is a plus Statistics knowledge and or six sigma training is required to develop tests and communicate data findings Experience with high volume consumer products is a plus Knowledge of data acquisition and data integration using relational database Ability to manage different test requirements and specify key quality parameters Background in the product development cycles and knowledge of stage gate process targeting product reliability Experienced with quality systems and implementation of standardized procedures and quality systems ASQ Certified Quality or Reliability Engineer accreditation or professional engineering certification desired Ability to manage and develop a team of highly focused and committed reliability engineers, quality engineers and quality testers and responsible for coordination, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the department/team and creating a positive climate where people want to do their best Contact: Caroline Jachura Purcell International Group 001.858.292.3280 x113 cjachura@purcellintl.com
