Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: the most overpaid free-agent contracts this offseason has
to include Ray Agnew, the defensive tackle who signed a four-year, $ 8.1 million contract with
the Rams that included a $ 2 million signing bonus… Agnew is due a modest $ 600,000 in '98
base salary and offseason workout money. But $ 4.9 million of the $ 8.1 million total counts
against the cap in 2000 and '01, the final two years of the contract.

Jason La Canfora, NFL.com: Atogwe's deal with the Rams worth a max of $32M over 5 years.
Howard Balzer, St. Louis Globe-Democrat: Broken down year-by-year, the total value of the
contract is $32.1 million. That figure does not include a $500,000 bonus for making the Pro Bowl
in any of the five years, but it can be earned only once. The $32.1 million total also doesn’t
include up to $600,000 in yearly escalators, the triggers of which are not known.
This year, Atogwe will be paid $2.1 million in guaranteed salary, and he received a roster bonus
of $2 million on July 1. After this season is where things get interesting.
The bottom line is that the remainder of the contract will likely void one day after the Feb. 6
Super Bowl, or he will be released later in the month before an $8 million roster bonus is due. If
he were paid that roster bonus, then an additional $3.5 million in salary becomes guaranteed if
he’s on the roster on the 60th day of the league year, which would be at the beginning of May.
The final three years of the contract include base salaries of $5.5 million in 2012 and 2013. In
2014, a $500,000 roster bonus is due on the third day of the league year, followed by $5 million
in salary.

Barron has three avenues to stretch his contract from the basic deal of $9.2 million to its
maximum of $11 million:
He gets a one-time incentive of $350,000 if he plays in 35 percent of the Rams' offensive snaps
this season, or plays in 45 percent of the snaps in either 2006, '07, '08, or '09. But that's only half
of the incentive. For him to get the $350,000, the Rams also must improve their ranking in one
of the following statistical categories over the previous season: completion percentage, sacks
allowed, or takeaway-giveaway differential.
Over the course of five seasons, this incentive should be relatively easy to reach.
Barron's base salary in 2009 can grow - or escalate - by a maximum of $250,000 in an escalator
triggered by selection to a Pro Bowl.
In another escalator clause, Barron's 2009 base salary could grow by $1.25 million if he reaches
80 percent playing time twice during the 2005, '06, and '07 seasons. He can also get there if he
averages 80 percent playing time between the 2005 and '08 seasons.

in 2011 and $6.2 million in 2012. That adds up to $25 million over the four years. But the
contract also calls for $50,000 in incentives in each of the four years. There also are escalator
clauses in the contract that can increase, or "escalate" Bartell's pay in 2011 and 2012, allowing
the total deal to max out at about $28 million. Bartell's base salaries in 2009 ($4.1 million) and

Howard Balzer, 101Sports.com: In his restructured deal, Bell will receive a $2.29 million roster

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: No signing bonus was issued, with Bradford receiving a
fully guaranteed $2.88 million roster bonus and a $320,000 base salary in 2010. Next off-season,
a $1,000 option will trigger a $17.974 million signing bonus, which greatly reduce Bradford's
base salaries from 2011-15. Those base salaries may be increased by $8 million via individual
and team playoff performance incentives. Bradford has a $8.42 million one-time roster bonus in
2011 which, when triggered, will increase his 2012-15 base salaries by $38.38 million, nearly $18
million of which is fully guaranteed.
Brian McIntyre, NFL.com: Bradford will still earn $12 million and his $15.595 million cap number
for 2012 is unchanged, but the two sides have changed how the $12 million will be delivered. As
part of a renegotiation from May 9, half of the $12 million in base salary was converted to a
roster bonus that was paid on May 11. The remaining $6 million will be paid out in base salary
during the 2012 season. The final three seasons of Bradford's contract were unchanged. He is

Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Britt's new contract with the Rams has been posted with
the league, and it calls for the veteran wide receiver to make $9.15 million over two years — a
far cry from the $14 million originally reported by some. Britt's base salary of $2.55 million in
2015 is guaranteed. He also gets a $1.5 million roster bonus and a $250,000 workout bonus —
which is a big amount as workout bonuses go. That adds up to a salary cap count of $4.3 million
in 2015. In 2016, Britt receives a $3.6 million base salary, a $1 million roster bonus, and another
$250,000 workout bonus. That adds up to a $4.85 million cap count for '16. Britt can void the
contract after the 2015 season, but that's based on what has been described as a very high
performance level this coming season. All incentives in the contract start above his performance
levels in 2014, when he caught a career-high 48 passes for a team-high 748 yards. He averaged
15.6 yards per catch and scored three touchdowns. Technically, Britt could reach $14 million in
compensation, but he would have to post back-to-back 1,000-yards receiving seasons among
other things.
Tom Pelissero, USA Today: Britt's 2-year, $9.15M deal with #Rams is worth up to $13.95M with
incentives. Contract voids if he has 901+ yards or 9+ TDs in 2015.

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: the Rams re-signed Clayton to a one-year deal that
included a $1 million base salary, nearly $700,000 in per game roster bonuses and up to
$875,000 in various incentives. Clayton's salary was "split", meaning he received a lower rate
($500,000) while on the PUP list, but will now be paid at the $1 million rate on the active roster.
Howard Balzer, 101Sports.com: Clayton's one-year deal has a unique split salary based on time
spent on PUP and the active roster. For at least the first six weeks of the season, he will be paid
the equivalent of a $500,000 salary ($29,412 per week). Once he is activated to the 53-man
roster, his salary bumps to $1 million ($58,824 per week). The most he can make in base salary
is $823,530, which would be for six weeks on PUP and 11 weeks on the active roster. The
contract also includes a roster bonus of $19,689 for every game he is on the 46-man game-day
roster. Even though he has to be on PUP for six weeks, the Rams have their bye in Week 5, so it's
possible he could be active and play in 11 games. The total potential roster bonus is $216,580 of
which only $98,445 currently counts against the salary cap because he was on the game-day
roster for just five games last season. For every game he is active after the fifth, the bonus
would be added to the Rams' cap. There are also $150,000 of other incentives in the deal, which
are probably considered unlikely to be earned for cap purposes. Thus, the maximum he could
earn for this season is $1.19 million.

Howard Balzer, 101Sports.com: Dunbar’s two-year contract has a base value of $3.05 million,
but he told friends he can also earn up to $750,000 in play-time incentives each season. Dunbar
is due a $1 million signing bonus and base salaries of $750,000 in 2012 and $1.3 million in 2013.
That makes his cap charge $1.25 million for this season. Although contract figures obtained by
101sports.com indicated the incentives total $250,000 each season, Dunbar said he gets
$125,000 for playing time of 60-64 percent; $250,000 for 65-69 percent; $500,000 for 70
percent or more and $750,000 for 70 percent or more and making the playoffs.
Aaron Wilson, NFP: Dunbar got a one-year, $850,000 deal from Rams, will make $650,000 over
13 game checks, has $1 million playtime incentive.
Nick Wagoner, ESPN: Dunbar's new two-year deal with the Rams pays him a little more than $2
million with incentives that can take it past $3 million… 2014 Base salary: $751,157 Guaranteed
roster bonus: $128,821 (to be paid March 30) Cap value: $879,978 Cash value: $879,978… 2015

value: $1,125,520… The only money guaranteed in the deal is the 2014 roster bonus of
$128,821. In addition, Dunbar has incentives for playing time and team performance that can
earn him up to $720,022 in each of the two seasons on the contract. Playing 50 percent or more
of the snaps or the Rams making the playoffs in 2014 would not only earn him incentive money
but would also give him the option to void the 2015 season.

scheduled to receive in a similar fashion [simple restructure]. The restructuring resulted in
savings of more than $ 900,000 on the 2000 cap.
Mike Florio, PFT: Not so fast, says Balzer. Faulk is still under contract with the Rams for four
more seasons, Balzer has reported. He gets a $2 million bonus and $2 million salaries in each
of the next two seasons, and he's then slated to earn $2.6 million in 2007 and $3.2 million in
2008. Balzer also reports that the Rams save not $1.5 million but $3.5 million in 2005 cap
space, and that Faulk took a total haircut of $2 million by reducing his $5.75 million salary and
by giving up his $250,000 workout bonus.

1,200 yards rushing and 400 yards receiving over the first four years of his new contract — from
2008 through 2011 — to void the final two years of his six-year deal… If Jackson reaches the
1,200-400 average, his base salary will increase, or "escalate," $3 million in both 2012 and 2013,
the final two years of his contract. But if he reaches those statistical plateaus, either he or the
Rams will be able to void the final two years of his contract.
Either party would have to exercise that option within a week of the end of the 2011 season. But
keep in mind, even if the final two years of the contract were voided, the Rams would have the
option of placing the franchise tag on Jackson following the 2011 campaign.
… The official signing bonus is $11.395 million, and $20.5 million of the deal is guaranteed.
Besides the signing bonus, the rest of the guaranteed money comes in the form of Jackson's

Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Kennedy's five-year, $9 million contract could grow by as
much as $1.5 million if the defensive tackle from Penn State reaches some incentives… Kennedy
can earn an additional $100,000 each year if he has 8 1/2 sacks and makes the Pro Bowl in that
season. Also, what is called an "escalator" clause kicks in if Kennedy reaches certain playing time
percentages in the first three seasons of the deal. An additional $1 million is added to the base
salary in Year 5 of the contract if Kennedy… Participates in 70 percent of the Rams' defensive
plays in each of his first three seasons, or… Participates in 80 percent of the defensive plays in
two of the first three seasons.
… $5.5 million of Kennedy's basic $9 million deal is in the form of a two-tiered bonus. Kennedy
gets a $1 million signing bonus right away, and gets an additional $4.5 million bonus prior to the
'04 season if the Rams exercise an option for Year 5 of the deal. It's almost a certainty the Rams
will exercise that option - because the $4.5 million is guaranteed even if the Rams fail to exercise
the option. (It's redistributed throughout the contract in the form of additional base salary in
'04, '05, and '06 if the option bonus is not exercised.) But assuming Kennedy's deal is for five
years, here's the year-by-year breakdown beyond the $5.5 million in bonuses…'03: $244,000
base salary, plus $900,000 roster bonus… '04: $305,000 base salary, plus $5,600 offseason
workout bonus… '05: $491,000 base salary, plus $100,000 offseason workout bonus… '06:
$500,000 base salary, plus $100,000 offseason workout bonus… '07: $760,000 base salary, plus

Laurinatis received the following base salaries with corresponding salary-cap figures: $620,000
in 2012, which was fully guaranteed, ($1.78 million), $1 million in 2013, which becomes fully
guaranteed if he's on the roster five days after the 2012 Super Bowl, ($12.4 million), $10 million

million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the 2017 league year.
Brian McIntyre, Yahoo! Sports: his five-year extension is worth $41.5 million in "new money."…
Over the next seasons, Laurinaitis can earn just over $42.2 million with another $2.5 million
available in base salary escalators from 2013-17 ($500,000 per season)… Laurinaitis is scheduled
to earn $24.62 million over [the first three years], $24 million of which is comprised of "new"
money. Laurinaitis received $23 million in "new" guaranteed money. This amount is comprised
of a $2 million signing bonus in 2012, a $1 million base salary and $11 million roster bonus in
2013 and a $9 million base salary guarantee in 2014.
Currently Laurinaitis' $2 million signing bonus and $620,000 base salary this season are "fully"
guaranteed. The rest is only partially guaranteed, but that will change soon. If Laurinaitis is on
the roster when the Rams travel to the Chicago Bears on Sept. 23, which he will be, his $11
million roster bonus in 2013 will go from being guaranteed for skill and injury only to fully
guaranteed (skill, injury and cap). If Laurinaitis is on the roster five days after Super Bowl XLVII,
his $1 million base salary in 2013 and $9 million of his $10 million base salary in 2014 will go
from being guaranteed for injury only to fully guaranteed.

Howard Balzer: Long's deal, like the players selected around him this year, does not include a
signing bonus. Instead, there is a roster bonus of $2.605 million this year, plus a first-year base
salary of $295,000. The subsequent salaries are $3.625 million for 2009, $4.35 million in 2010,
$5.075 million in 2011, $5.8 million in 2012 and $3.285 million in 2013. Those six years total
$25.035 million. The base salaries are guaranteed from 2009 through 2012, and this year's
roster bonus and salary, for all practical purposes, are guaranteed.
It has been said the sixth year of the deal is a club option, and this is how that works. The Rams
can buy out the sixth year by paying Long $16.2 million in 2009. Should they do that, the base
salaries reduce to $285,000 in 2009, $1.11 million in 2010, $1.835 million in 2011 and $2.569
million in 2012. That would add about $13 million in value to the contract. There are also
escalators in the contract, providing a significant jump in salary for 2010-2012 if Long reached
minimum playing time and team qualifiers in either 2008 or 2009. His total base salaries would
increase $19 million ($6 million in 2010, $6.56 million in 2011 and $6.44 million in 2012). In
addition, Long can earn a maximum total of $4.015 million for various incentives, including
rookie awards, Pro Bowls and number of sacks. The bottom line is this: The maximum value of
the deal over six years is $55.75 million. However, with the likelihood it would reduce to five
years, the maximum total value is $48 million. The true guaranteed money is $21.75 million,
which includes his 2008 compensation.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Long triggered a $4.01 million one-time payment from
his rookie contract this past season that has also escalated his 2011 and 2012 base salaries by
$9.5 million each.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: The renegotiation, which included no new money, was
signed on September 17. Long received a $12.1 million signing bonus and lowered his 2011 base
salary to $603,750 for the final 16 weeks of the regular season. Between the one week at his
$11.335 million rate and 16 weeks at the lowered rate, Long will earn $1.235 million in base
salary this season. Long's 2011 cap number is now $9.482 million, freeing up $4 million in cap
room this season. In 2012, Long is scheduled to earn $10.06 million in base salary and due to
the signing bonus, now has a cap number of $18.3075 million. An additional $2.9 million in base
salary escalation is available for next season, which is tied to sacks, playing time and Pro Bowls.
Aaron Wilson, Scout.com: Long's four-year contract extension is worth $58 million and includes
$36.76 million in guaranteed money… Long will make a $10.3 million base salary this year that's
fully guaranteed for skill, injury and cap. In 2013, Long is due a $13.25 million base salary that's
fully guaranteed for skill, injury and cap. In 2014, Long has a $13.2 million base salary that's only
guaranteed for injury at the time of him signing his deal. However, if Long's on the roster five
days after the Super Bowl this season then it becomes fully guaranteed for skill and cap. In 2015,
Long is due an $8 million base salary. He's also scheduled for a $2 million roster bonus on the
third day of the league year. In 2016, Long is due a $9.75 million base salary. His $2 million
roster bonus is scheduled for the third day of the league year. Long's deal carries the following
salary-cap figures: $18.547 million (2012), $13.25 million (2013), $13.2 million (2014), $10
million (2015) and $11.75 million (2016).
Howard Balzer, LockerDome.com: Long signed a new contract that converts $6 million of his
guaranteed $13.25 million salary this year and makes it a roster bonus. Normally, a roster bonus
fully counts against the cap in the year it is paid, but because the money is guaranteed it is
prorated over the four years left on his contract.
Brian McIntyre: Rams converted $3M of Chris Long’s base salary into a signing bonus, lowered
cap number by $2M.

Howard Balzer, LockerDome.com: Long’s deal is worth $34 million in base terms over four years.
However, while $20 million could end up being guaranteed, as of now only $12 million is fully
guaranteed. In reality, this is a two-year, $16 million contract. Long received a signing bonus of
$5 million and his $3 million base salary for 2013 is fully guaranteed. With the bonus prorated
over four years, his salary-cap charge for this year is $4.25 million. The remainder of his salaries
are $8 million in 2014, $9.25 million in 2015 and $8.75 million in 2016. The $8 million salary in
2014 is guaranteed for skill only, but only $4 million is currently guaranteed for injury. That $4
million becomes guaranteed if he is on the Rams’ roster on the final day of the 2013 league year,
which would be next March. Another $4 million of his 2015 salary will be guaranteed if he is on
the roster on the fifth day of the 2015 league year. Long can also earn another $2.5 million over
the life of the contract in incentives and escalators. There are $375,000 in unlikely to be earned
incentives each year for play-time, playoffs and Pro Bowls. In addition, there are escalators up to
$400,000 in 2015 and $600,000 in 2016 based on playing time.
Ben Volin, Palm Beach Post: 2014 base salary: $8 million (100% skill/cap guarantee at time of
signing and $4m guaranteed for injury at time of signing; 100% injury guarantee if on roster last
day of 2013 league year)… only Long’s 2013 season is fully guaranteed, for a total of $12 million
($5 million signing bonus, $3 million 2013 base salary and $4 million guarantee for 2014). To get
the other half of his $8 million salary in 2014, it appears he has to be on the active 53-man
roster on the last day of the 2013 season — which means he can’t be on Injured Reserve. That’s
a big distinction for Long, who has ended each of the last two seasons on IR. The Rams could still
keep Long for 2014 even if he does get hurt in 2013, though, and since they’re already paying
him $4 million for that season, they probably will. But that’s the first “out” for the Rams. The
second “out” is a big one, and that’s before the 2015 season. The Rams can escape from the
contract after just two years if they decide to cut him before the fifth day of the 2015 league
year (sometime in early March). If he’s still on the roster then, he gets $4 million guaranteed.

Lorraine Key, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Lyght still hasn't signed his contract: a four-year, $ 10.7
million deal. The team matched an offer sheet in April by Jacksonville for Lyght… including $ 4
million guaranteed for this season.
AP: Jacksonville reportedly offered Lyght $4 million guaranteed this season and an overall
contract of more than $10.5 million. The Rams had trouble squeezing the $4 million into their
1996 salary cap. But the Jaguar contract called for only $1.7 million in the second year, meaning,
under the rules, that $2.3 million of the first year's salary can be considered a signing bonus. For
cap purposes, signing bonuses can be prorated over the life of the contract, meaning that the
Rams had to count only $2.28 million of the $4 million Lyght will make this year in their 1996
salary cap.

Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: As he signed his three-year, $2.91 million contract Friday at

signing bonus of $550,000 and a 2003 base salary of $655,000, identical numbers to the Rams'

contract: $850,000 in 2004 (compared to the Rams' $800,000), and $1 million in 2005
(compared to the Rams' $900,000). But with the offers so close, McCollum decided to stay put.
Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The two-year contract extension signed by center Andy
McCollum over Thanksgiving weekend is worth $2.5 million. The deal includes a $500,000

Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: he essentially signed the same contract on Aug. 16 they
had offered in late July: $ 18.3 million over six years, including a $ 6.3 million signing bonus in a
deal that included voidables, buybacks and base salary escalators… The amount paid by the
Rams to buy back years 4, 5, and 6 of the contract if Pace voids was increased - from $ 3.5
million to $ 4 million… Pace can now earn up to $ 3.9 million for making the Pro Bowl or allconference team… Pace gets an extra $ 900,000 if he makes the Pro Bowl after the '97 season; $
800,000 more if he makes it in '98; $ 700,000 in '99; $ 600,000 in 2000; and $ 500,000 if he does
so in 2001. Only if he makes the Pro Bowl or all-conference in all five of those years - and then
makes it again in 2002 - does he qualify for an extra $ 400,000 in Year 6 of his contract… Pace
also can earn an extra $ 350,000 a year for being Super Bowl MVP, and an extra $ 350,000 a year
for being NFL MVP. On paper at least, each provision can bring Pace an extra $ 2.1 million - or a
$ 4.2 million total - if Pace qualifies every year… The ultimate fluff in the Pace contract is the
seventh year, in which Pace "gets" a $ 2.1 million base salary and a $ 9 million reporting bonus.
Truth be told, Zygmunt is almost mocking Poston with the $ 9 million figure. He admitted as
much last week by saying "it might as well be $ 40 million." Why? Pace will never see that
money. None of it's guaranteed. In fact, the seventh year is automatically voided by the Rams if
they exercise their option to buy back years 4, 5, and 6.
Vito Stellino, Baltimore Sun: The latest example was the seven-year, $29.4 million deal that
Orlando Pace supposedly got from the St. Louis Rams. At best, it's really a six-year, $18.3 million
deal because the Rams tacked on a bogus seventh year worth $11.1 million simply to inflate the
figures at the request of agent Carl Poston… What Pace really got was a $6.3 million signing
bonus with an $841,330 base that goes up the maximum 25 percent each year along with a
chance to void the contract after the third year in return for $4 million… Deferring part of the
signing bonus is routine. Pace got $3.3 million of his $6.3 million up front
USA Today: $29.4 million for seven yrs. Signing bonus: $6.3 million. Base salaries: $840,000,
$1.050 million, $1.260 million, $1.472 million, $1.6 million, $3 million, $2.1 million. Seventh year
has $9 million roster bonus. Deal voids after three yrs. if Pace plays 50% of snaps in any season;
Rams retain buy-back option. Package averages: $4.2 million (seven yrs.); $3.05 million (six yrs.)
Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Pace signed a seven-year, $52.9 million contract… Besides
his $15 million signing bonus, he gets base salaries of $2.975 million this season, $3.975 million
in 2006, $4.075 million in '07, $5.175 million in '08, $5.975 million in '09, $7.175 million in 2010,
and $8.375 million in 2011. He also gets a $25,000 offseason workout bonus in each of the
seven years of the contract.

Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Proehl agreed to lower his base salaries for 2000 and 2001.
In return, the Rams agreed to guarantee both years of his contract. The restructuring freed up
about $ 400,000.
Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Proehl, whose dramatic "Catch for the Ages" gave the Rams
an 11-6 victory over Tampa Bay in the 1999 NFC title game, has agreed to a one-year, $775,000

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBolg.com: $5,362,635 [signing bonus]
Joel Corry, NFP: The 2011 14th overall pick was scheduled to make $1,661,734 and $6.969
million this year and next year, respectively, prior to signing his palindrome-filled deal. The
$57,014,895 extension contains $41,171,774 in guarantees. $15,618,583 is practically fully
guaranteed at signing, which consists of a $4,776,774 signing bonus, $608,608 2014 base salary
and $10,233,201 third day of the 2015 league year roster bonus. The roster bonus is guaranteed
for skill and injury initially and becomes fully guaranteed on September 24. There’s an elevenday lag time with the roster bonus guarantee because it would have been treated as a signing
bonus under the salary cap and prorated over five years if fully guaranteed at signing. Quinn’s
$5,555,555, $7,777,777 and $6,161,616 base salaries in 2015, 2016 and 2017 are guaranteed for
injury at signing. Each base salary is fully guaranteed if the All-Pro defensive end is on the roster
on the fifth day of the league year (mid-March) in each specific contract years (i.e.; 2015 base
salary becomes guaranteed on fifth day of the 2015 league year.). Quinn’s $2,424,242 and
$3,633,363 third day of the 2016 and 2017 roster bonuses are also initially guaranteed for
injury, but fully vest a year before they are payable. The 2016 roster bonus is fully guaranteed
on the fifth day of the 2015 league year. The 2017 roster bonus becomes fully guaranteed on
the fifth day of the 2016 league year. The 2014 and 2015 guarantees don't contain offsets…
Technically, Quinn’s 2014 base salary in the new contract is $646,646. Since Quinn played one
week of the regular season under his original $1,661,734 base salary, he is getting 16/17th of
base salary at the new $646,646 rate ($608,608). He is receiving $706,357 of total base salary in
2014 ($97,749 for one week and $608,608 for 16 weeks). The $97,749 isn’t included as a part of
Quinn’s guarantees because it was previously earned before the new deal took effect. Quinn has
unguaranteed $10,333,301 and $11,811,121 base salaries in his 2018 and 2019 contract years.
There are also unguaranteed $1,111,111 and $1,121,211 third day of the league year roster
bonuses in 2018 and 2019… Quinn’s 2014 cap number practically remains the same under the
new deal. It’s $3,007,958 instead of $3,007,981 (both figures include $5,600 off-season workout
per diem earned). Quinn’s 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 cap numbers are $16,744,111,
$11,157,374, $10,750,334, $12,399,767 and $12,932,332.

Howard Balzer, Scout.com: the basic total value of the four-year contract is actually $4.11
million, even though it has been said to be worth around $6.3 million. It includes a signing bonus
of $2.32 million, a guaranteed base salary this year ($320,000) and $188,000 of his $405,000
salary in 2011 is guaranteed. The total of the actual guaranteed money is $2.828 million. The
$4.11 million total is comprised of $1.79 million in base salaries and the signing bonus… Saffold
can earn a $1.253 million bonus that can be paid only once for any season in which he achieves
80 percent playing time and the team qualifier is met. The guarantees void if that happens, but
the reality is that those salaries would have already been paid unless he achieves it this year. If
he does that, the $188,000 guarantee in 2011 voids. His 2013 salary of $575,000 can also be
increased by as much as $280,000 depending on what happens from 2010 through 2012. If he
reaches 80 percent playing time and the team qualifier once, the 2013 salary goes up $80,000. If
he reaches that 80 percent twice and the team qualifier once, it goes up $180,000. For playing
80 percent of the plays three times and hitting the team qualifier once, the maximum increase
of $280,000 kicks in.
Then, there are roster bonuses. If Saffold meets both the playing-time threshold and team
qualifier this year, he receives a $200,000 roster bonus on the first game of the 2011 season.
There is a $210,000 first-game roster bonus in 2012 if he hits both qualifiers in 2010 or 2011 and
completes the offseason workout program in 2012. Finally, if Saffold meets both qualifiers in
each of his first three years and completes the 2013 offseason program, there is a first-game
roster bonus of $235,000 in 2013. Also in the contract is a $50,000 bonus for making the Pro
Bowl in any of the four years of the contract and, believe it or not, a $50,000 bonus if he is
named the NFL Rookie of the Year this season. If all the bonuses and escalators are reached,
including the maximum $280,000 bonus as well as those for the Pro Bowl (making it all four
years) and Rookie of the Year, Saffold would earn $6.538 million over the life of the contract.
Nick Wagoner, ESPN: Saffold's deal with the Rams checks in at five years for $31.347 million with
a true full guarantee of $11 million. That $11 million includes a fully guaranteed 2014 base
salary of $3 million, a $5 million signing bonus and a $3 million 2015 roster bonus. There are,
however, relatively easy ways for Saffold to earn an additional $8 million-plus. Saffold's $4
million base salary in 2015 and $4.5 million base salary in 2016 become fully guaranteed if he is
still on the roster on the third day of the league year in each of those seasons or based on injury

J.I. Halsell: 5/54, 33 gteed, 33 over 3
Jason LaCanfora, NFL.com: The contract that Rams rookie OT Jason Smith signed Thursday is
worth a maximum of $61.775 million over five years, with $33 million guaranteed
Jim Thomas, Post-Dispatch: It’s a five-year contract that can max out at just under $62 million if
certain incentives are reached, according to league sources. The deal includes $33 million in
guaranteed money.
Mike Florio, PFT: Last year's second overall pick, Rams tackle Jason Smith, received a contract
with $21.975 million guaranteed at the time of signing (i.e., that's what he gets if he gets hit by a
bus the next day), a post-option guarantee of $28.5675 million, and a post-one-timer guarantee
(i.e., not really a guarantee) of $33 million.
CNNSI.com: $20,570,000 [2010 salary] Like Stafford, the guy chosen over him in '09, No. 2 pick
Smith opted to forgo a signing bonus in lieu of a giant payout in year two of his deal: $20.2
million in option and roster bonuses.
Mike Sando, ESPN: Smith's inclusion reflects the structure of his contract, which includes a $16.3
million option bonus due this year. His compensation, estimated at $20.6 million for 2010, falls
dramatically in 2011.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Under the restructure, Smith's base salary in 2012 has
been reduced to a fully guaranteed $4 million and he will also receive a $500,000 roster bonus, a
pay cut of $5.5 million for this season. The 2014 season season has been deleted, so the $3.2675
million in option bonus proration has been accelerated onto the Rams' 2012 cap. Despite that
acceleration, Smith's 2012 cap number will go from $13.2675 million to $11.035 million, a
reduction of $2.2325 million. The 2013 season of Smith's contract, which is now voidable, has
also been restructured. The $12 million base salary has been replaced with a $750,000 base
salary and a $11.25 million roster bonus…
Manish Mehta, NY Daily News: The Rams changed $1.55 million of Smith’s guaranteed base
salary into a signing bonus leaving him with a guaranteed base salary of $2.45 million, which the
Jets now acquire, matching that of Hunter.

Howard Balzer, SportsXchange: Smith's contract is worth $2.5 million, of which $1 million is his

Timmerman's contract.
Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Timmerman's contract, signed Tuesday, is a five-year,
$14.26 million deal, which includes a $5.5 million signing bonus. The contract is cap-friendly the
first two years. Timmerman counts only $1.76 million against the salary cap in 2004 - a figure
that includes $660,000 in base salary and one-fifth of that $5.5 million signing bonus. He counts
$2 million against the cap in '05, a figure that includes a $900,000 base salary. Timmerman's
base salary escalates to $1.5 million in '06, $2.2 million in '07, and $2.3 million in '08. In addition,
he is due roster bonuses at the start of the league year of $500,000 in '06, $200,000 in '07, and

Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Walsh signed a two-year deal with the Rams for a base
salary of $ 1 million in '96 and '97. Interestingly, it includes no signing bonus per se but a
guaranteed $ 500,000 in '96. Here's how the guarantee works: If Walsh is cut by the Rams and
picked up by another club, the new club inherits the guarantee - and the Rams aren't out the $
500,000. What if the new club signs him for less than $ 500,000 - say $ 400,000? Then the new
club picks up $ 400,000 of the guarantee, and the Rams are responsible for the remaining $
100,000.

Howard Balzer, 101Sports.com: Wells’ contract is worth $24 million over four years and includes
a $4 million signing bonus. His base salaries of $3.5 million in 2012 and $5.5 million in 2013 are
fully guaranteed to bring the total guarantees to $13 million. His salary-cap figure is $4.5 million
this year. The contract also contains $500,000 escalators from 2013-2015, which could add
another $1.5 million to the deal.
Field Yates, ESPN: Wells had his base salary for 2014 reduced from $5.5 million to $1 million,
though he received a roster bonus of $1.65 million upon execution of the restructure and can
earn up to $850,000 in per game roster bonuses for the 2014 season.
He also reduced his 2015 base salary from $5.5 million to $2 million, but his 2015 compensation
now includes $1.75 million to be earned in the form of a roster bonus.
The restructure creates $2.2125 million in immediate cap space for the Rams for 2014 and
another $1.75 million in cap space for 2015.
Nick Wagoner, ESPN: Can also earn up to $2 million in bonuses for playing time, team

It’s an open-and-shut case, as we see it. Wroten, through his own actions (and stupidity… more
