Let’s Get Started… Project-based Learning
Change!
The only thing
in life that is
guaranteed to
NEVER
change, is the
fact that things
will always
continue to
change.
Project Based Learning
• Project Based Learning is the new piece in College
and Career Awareness
• One PBL activity is required during each section
(quarter or trimester)
• Each PBL should take between five and ten - 45
minute class periods to complete
• There are 8 PBL Lessons to choose from
• Every teacher should be able to find a PBL Lesson
that they are comfortable teaching
Project-based Learning
 Involves realistic problems and situations
 Are based on authentic educational
goals
 Include formative and summative
evaluation
 Are learner centered and teacher
facilitated
 Are intrinsically engaging and motivating
 Are frequently multidisciplinary
 Improve students' research and
problem-solving skills
 Improves students’ ability to work
cooperatively with their peers.
Projects vs. Project-based Learning
Projects
Project-based Learning
Are often graded based on
teacher perceptions that may
not be shared explicitly with
students.
Grading is based on clearly defined rubric made
or modified specifically for the project.
Formative and summative evaluations are
conducted by students and the teacher.
The students do not have many
opportunities to make
choices/decisions during the
“project.”
The students make most of the choices during
the project within the pre-approved guidelines.
The teacher is often surprised and even
delighted with the students’ choices.
Are based upon directions and
are done “like last year.”
Is based upon a Driving Question that
encompasses every aspect of learning that will
occur and establishes the need to know.
Are sometimes based around a
tool for the sake of the tool
rather than an authentic
question/problem.
Use technology, tools, and practices that would
be used in the world of work. Students choose
tools according to purposes.
Are basically the same.
Products or processes are usually different
8 Essential Elements of PBL include:
1. Significant Content - focused on teaching students important knowledge
and skills.
2. 21st century competencies - problem solving, critical thinking,
collaboration, communication, and creativity/innovation
3. In-Depth Inquiry - Students are engaged in an extended, rigorous process
of asking questions, using resources, and developing answers.
4. Driving Question - focused by an open-ended question which captures their
task or frames their exploration.
5. Need to Know - Students see the need to gain knowledge, understand
concepts, and apply skills in order to answer the Driving Question.
6. Voice and Choice - Students are allowed to make some choices.
7. Critique and Revision - students give and receive feedback on the quality of
their work, leading them to make revisions or conduct further inquiry.
8. Public Audience - Students present their work to other people, beyond their
classmates and teacher.

Engagement
Activities
Project-based learning is
authentic, it represents the
world of work in CTE and STEM
areas. In the real-world, we
address problems by opening
or developing projects that will
hopefully result in effective
products or processes
addressing problems.
PBL Projects you could use
Cord Mess
Students will find a solution to the
problem of tangled up electronic
device cords. Students will work
through the problem in teams to
come up with what they think is the
“best” solution while working within
the confines of time and the
materials that are available.

Culinary Concepts: Utah’s Own
Students will use project-based
learning to develop a unique retail
food product that includes
ingredients (51%) that have been
sourced in Utah to create a new
“Utah’s Own” company. Students will
work in teams to design a product
that could be created with Utah
products. The resulting food product
could be sold in retail outlets and/or
be served in school cafeterias.

Career Gaming
Students design games
that will assist others with
identifying a variety of
careers, possible
emerging careers, the
education required for
career options, and the
types of salaries that can
be expected in each
career.

PBL Projects you could use
Edutainment
Students will work in pairs or small
groups using the engineering design
process to research, design, and
ultimately create a toy that teaches
age appropriate skills or factual
information for either individual or
small groups of young children in
addition to providing ageappropriate play.

Energy Bar Exploration
Students will use project-based
learning to develop a recipe for an
energy bar that is healthy, made from
easy-to-find ingredients, and simple to
prepare. They will then design the
marketing and branding of this new
energy bar. A box will be constructed to
display the marketing and branding of
the product. Finally, teams will present
their finished product to a group.

Know and Glow
Students will design, develop, and
present the clothing/accessories of
the future using programming,
simple electronics, and textile
construction processes.

Utah STAYcation
Students will use project-based
learning to research several Utah
destinations of their choice. In a
fictional scenario wherein they work
for the Utah Travel Council, they will
create ads for three of these
destinations to be used in an
advertising campaign to promote
vacationing in Utah to people who
already live in Utah.

That’s Sick!
In this project, students will be
solving a health care mystery. The
students will work in teams to
research cause, symptoms,
prevention, and other information
about 15 illnesses. They will then
gather information from fictional
interviews with affected patients and
employees involved in an epidemic
of a food borne illness, eventually
determining the cause of the illness
and creating a public service
advertisement.

Hands on!
Let’s Try it!
Cord Mess
Students will find a solution to the
problem of tangled up electronic
device cords. Students will work
through the problem in teams to come
up with what they think is the “best”
solution while working within the
confines of time and the materials that
are available.
Question?
“Can we design something that
people will use, is low cost, easy to
make, and sell profitably, thereby
solving the 21st Century cord mess
issue?”
Task
 Working in groups, use the worksheet to
go through the Engineering Design
process similar to what the students will
do in class.
 If possible, use your portable devices to
find possible solutions that could be
made in the classroom.
Culinary Concepts
Students will use project-based
learning to develop a unique retail
food product that includes ingredients
(51%) that have been sourced in Utah
to create a new “Utah’s Own” company.
Students will work in teams to design a
product that could be created with
Utah products. The resulting food
product could be sold in retail outlets
and/or be served in school cafeterias.
Question?
“How can you become a “Utah’s Own”
entrepreneur for a food based
company with these ingredients:
wheat/flour, honey, salt, eggs, milk,
butter, cheese, jams and seasonings?”
Task
 Working in groups, use the worksheet to
go come up with a food product that
could be made with Utah’s Own
products.
 Be prepared to share your ideas with the
group.
Career Gaming
Students design games that will assist
others with identifying a variety of
careers, possible emerging careers, the
education required for career options,
and the types of salaries that can be
expected in each career.
Question?
“Can we design games that would
help others students learn about
career opportunities?” ”
Task
 Working in groups and using resources
available to you, create a game to help
others explore many careers.
 Be prepared to share your game with the
group.
 Resources: Electronic Devices that you
have with you, poster board, 3x5 cards,
dice, markers, paper clips and binder
clips, etc.

How can we complete a compelling
advertising campaign for a Staycation
in Utah?
Task
 Working in groups of 2-3, discuss the
Utah destination image provided and
create a slogan or caption that you
might use on your brochure and write
this down on a sticky-note.
 Share your image/caption on a map
(white board or in Google Earth.)
