Thanks to her and other activists I have a much richer life than I would have had in the 20th century. Early Life • • • • • • Coretta Scott King was born on April 27, 1927 in Marion, Alabama She was raised on her parents farm, Bernice McMurry Scott and Obadiah Scott, in Perry County,Alabama As a child Coretta would walk 5 miles to get to oneroom Crossroad School in Marion, Alabama As Coretta walked to school the white/caucasian children would take a bus to a school closer by As Coretta got older she moved onto Lincoln High School, in 1945 Coretta graduated and went on to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio She was very interested in music and learned to play a few instruments Influences & Inspirations • • • • Eleanor Roosevelt- First Lady of the U.S.A. She was fighting for African Americans and woman’s rights, and that may not seem like a lot but it is. She was a terrific civil rights activist.
