NEW THIS YEAR!
•

•
•
Workshop style teaching has been shown
to be the most effective method of helping
children learn
Reading is the MOST important subject for
young learners
Readers will bring home their reading log
and reading notebook EVERY night, it HAS
to come back to school.
Structure very similar to Writer’s Workshop
 Mini lesson, independent reading/
guided reading groups, and end of lesson
sharing
Incorporated into our “Daily 5”
•
•
•
•
Wordly Wise vocabulary
Cursive handwriting
Grammar practice
Spelling words
• Students are familiar with this structure
• 3rd graders focus on narrative writing, opinion
writing, essays, fictional stories, and memoirs
• Don’t expect their writing to look
perfect– supposed to look like an
8 or 9 year old wrote it 
CGI- Cognitively Guided Instruction
• This is VERY DIFFERENT from how we
were taught… this is a good thing!
• Encourages students to figure out
problems using their own reasoning (not
an algorithm that does not make sense to
them)
• Structure: Number Sense Talk,
unpacking a problem, independent work,
strategy share out
CGI- Cognitively Guided Instruction
• Steer away from rote memorization
• Students understand the foundation 
ability to apply to other problem types
Mrs. Bauer and Mrs. Vavao teach science
•
•
•
Science lab every other Monday 9:10-9:55
I will teach Mrs. Hunt’s class and our class
We start with the Solar system  Physical
science  Life science
Mrs. Hunt and Ms. Hooper teach social studies
•
•
We switch for 45 minutes once a week
Focus on community
• Students learn all about Manhattan Beach
• Students use Scholastic newspapers
• The district is steering away from a heavy emphasis
on homework assignments
• 30 minutes at most
• AT LEAST 20 minutes of reading every day
• Sometimes there may be a math or
writing activity
• List of reading responses in
homework reading notebook 
students choose the prompt
•
