Structure very similar to Writer’s Workshop Mini lesson, independent reading/ guided reading groups, and end of lesson sharing Incorporated into our “Daily 5” • • • • Wordly Wise vocabulary Cursive handwriting Grammar practice Spelling words • Students are familiar with this structure • 3rd graders focus on narrative writing, opinion writing, essays, fictional stories, and memoirs • Don’t expect their writing to look perfect– supposed to look like an 8 or 9 year old wrote it CGI- Cognitively Guided Instruction • This is VERY DIFFERENT from how we were taught… this is a good thing! • Encourages students to figure out problems using their own reasoning (not an algorithm that does not make sense to them) • Structure: Number Sense Talk, unpacking a problem, independent work, strategy share out CGI- Cognitively Guided Instruction • Steer away from rote memorization • Students understand the foundation ability to apply to other problem types Mrs. Bauer and Mrs. Vavao teach science • • • Science lab every other Monday 9:10-9:55 I will teach Mrs. Hunt’s class and our class We start with the Solar system Physical science Life science Mrs. Hunt and Ms. Hooper teach social studies • • We switch for 45 minutes once a week Focus on community • Students learn all about Manhattan Beach • Students use Scholastic newspapers • The district is steering away from a heavy emphasis on homework assignments • 30 minutes at most • AT LEAST 20 minutes of reading every day • Sometimes there may be a math or writing activity • List of reading responses in homework reading notebook students choose the prompt • • • • PE M, T, TH, F: 10:45 AM- 11:10 AM Chromebook cart once a week 45 min Music Thursdays: 9:10-9:55 Science specialist Monday (every other): 9:10-9:55 • Incorporated into our routine, no set test • I will check based on their ability to apply concepts learned into their writing • Program geared towards sight words • Individualized to each student • As of now the only set field trip we have is walking to the MB Historical Society in Pollywog Park • Open to suggestions Become a Super Dragon!
