Introduction
T
hrough the years there have been many different typing (keyboarding) systems introduced and
established with many different thoughts in mind. In this introduction we will discuss three of
the most popular keyboard layouts used: the QWERTY keyboard, the DVORAK keyboard, and
the COLEMAK keyboard.
QWERTY - the most common keyboard layout, the most used, and the best known
standard English computer keyboard is this system. The keyboard’s name comes
from the six keys that are located on the top alphabetic key row (starting at the left)
and just below the numbers, is Q-W-E-R-T-Y. The QWERTY keyboard was designed
in 1868 by Christopher Sholes, the inventor of the typewriter. According to myth,
Sholes arranged the keys in an odd fashion to prevent jamming in order to separate
letters of commonly-used words or letter combinations. However, there is no
evidence of this claim, except the QWERTY keyboard arrangement does hinder
typing speed. The Sholes and Glidden typewriter was the first commercially
successful typewriter, and then sold to E. Remington and Sons in 1873. With further
refining, Remington introduced the Remington typewriter to the market on July 1,
1874. During its development years, the typewriter evolved as a curiosity item, to a
practical device, and then becoming an industry standard.

DVORAK – the Dvorak keyboard was designed in the 1930s by August Dvorak, a professor of
education, along with Wiliam Dealy, Dvorak’s brother-in-law. Dvorak thought the QWERTY keyboard
was uncomfortable and wasted too much energy for the typist to move fingers around the board.
Unlike the QWERTY keyboard, the Dvorak was designed so the middle row included the most used
common letters. In addition, the common letter combinations are positioned so the typist can type
much faster. The main difference between QWERTY and Dvorak is the home row where the fingers
rest. Dvorak tries to put the most popularly used keys such as vowels at a place where they are
easily assessible in order to save keystrokes. Likewise, most other common strokes are typed with
the right hand.
Interesting Fact: It’s been estimated that in an average 8-hour day a typist’s hands will travel 16
miles on a QWERTY keyboard, but only 1 mile on a Dvorak.
Dvorak Keyboard
COLEMAK – the COLEMAK is the third most popular keyboard layout for touch typing in English, after
QWERTY and Dvorak. It builds upon the QWERTY layout as a base, changing the positions of 17 keys
while retaining the QWERTY position of most non-alphabetic characters and any of the popular
keyboard shortcuts, thus making it easier to learn than Dvorak for those who already type with
QWERTY. The advantages of a Colemak keyboard are:
 Ergonomic and comfort – fingers on QWERTY move over 2 times more than on Colemak.
QWERTY has 16 times more hand/row movement than the Colemak. By using the
Colemak home row, there are 35 times more words to type than on QWERTY.

 Easy to learn – allows easy transition from QWERTY. With the Colemak, many common
shortcuts such as Ctrl+Z/X/C/V are the same as the QWERTY keyboard.
 Fast – most of the typing is done with the strongest and fastest fingers with a low samefinger/hand ratio.
 Multilingual – allows typing in over 40 languages and a variety of symbols, e.g. "pâté",
"mañana", €, em-dash, non-breaking space.
Colemak Keyboard
In Summary . . .
The Q-W-E-R-T-Y keyboard was built to accommodate a slow typing speed. Early on, typists had problems with
the plates jamming in the mechanical arms when they typed too fast. Christopher Sholes invented the QWERTY
keyboard layout to force typists to type slower so the typewriter keys wouldn’t jam. Thus, QWERTY became the
standard for business use for many years to come.
Jamming typewriters is not an issue for today’s computer users, so why is the QWERTY layout still used today?
One answer is the continued reliance on QWERTY is simply a matter of ensuring ongoing productivity. Most
companies do not want their employees to lose productivity while they learn a new keyboard layout; thus, taking
weeks or even months before a typist can type at full speed and become productive again. Also, most individuals
are unwilling to learn an alternate method.
Another reason is marketing to a QWERTY crowd is the focus of manufacturers. It would be is major problem for
manufacturers to make a change by adopting another layout because of the cost. Even cell phone manufacturers
incorporate a cell phone QWERTY keyboard, and many users simply do not know that alternative keyboards even
exist. Laptop computers have the QWERTY layout, too. Therefore, it is very unlikely that alternative keyboards
will be marketed in the U.S. anytime in the future.

Keyboarding Drill & Practice Activity
DIRECTIONS: After all alphabet letters and punctuation (; : , .) have been presented, students can
continue to practice and reinforce their keyboarding skills in the classroom or on their computer at home
using this DRILL & PRACTICE activity. This activity has been created as a protected file and enables students
to simply key in the data with NO RETURNS at the ends of each line – the lines will wrap. When each set of
two lines is complete (EACH LINE KEYED ONE TIME ONLY), the student will simply TAB to the next set to
continue on with their keying practice. The objective of this practice is for students to keep their eyes on the
lines to be keyed and not on their hands. Using correct finginering on the keyboard is essential as they
memorize key locations since this will result in good form and increase their speed.
