• “Active Shooter” vs. workplace violence
• How? Why? When? Where? No definitive
answers, only questions.
• Statistics;
- Federal statistics state workplace violence
caused nearly 17% of all fatal U.S. work injuries in
2011
- 4,609 fatal working injuries in U.S. in 2011, of
which 780 were attributed to “violence and
other injuries by persons or animals”. Of the 780,
458 were homicides and 242 suicides.
POLICING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
• Shootings most frequent manner of death in both
homicides (78%) and suicides (45%)
• Men made up majority of fatal workplace injuries
attributed to violence (680) vs. women (100)
• Homicides account for 21% of fatal workplace
injuries to women, with nearly 2 out of 5 incidents
being spouses or domestic partners (current and
former) who commit the offense
• Overall, however, fatal work injuries have
decreased by 21% since 2006 and more than 25%
since 1992

• Workplace Violence Survey, published in 2012,
found that over 1/3 (36%) of organizations reported
incidents of workplace violence
• That’s one in three…how do we (you) respond?
• Recognition, evaluation, prevention only happens
with REALISTIC DOCUMENTATION and appropriate
response
• Behavioral intervention team(s)
• EAP
• NEVER HESITATE TO INVOLVE LAW ENFORCEMENTWe exist for these reasons
