Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including
figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word
choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place;
how it sets a formal or informal tone).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the
course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details;
provide an objective summary of the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.1
Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using
valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
Key Shifts
Shift 3: Staircase of Complexity Students read the central, grade appropriate text around
which instruction is centered. Teachers are patient, create more time and space and
support in the curriculum for close reading.
Shift 4: Text-based Answers Students engage in rich and rigorous evidence based
conversations about text.
Shift 6: Academic Vocabulary Students constantly build the transferable vocabulary they
need to access grade level complex texts. This can be done effectively by spiraling like
content in increasingly complex texts.

Learning Target: I can find credible sources to support my research
paper.
Take notes on the Following:
4. Common website names:
1. .com: a commercial (business website – www.nike.com is
Nike’s website)
2. .gov: a government website (www.whitehouse.gov is President
Obama’s website)
3. .edu: an education or school website (www.fordham.edu is
Fordham University’s website)
4. .org: an organization’s website (www.change.org is an
organization that works to make change by having people sign
petitions)
In general, websites that end in .com, unless they are a news website
or somehow related to what you are researching (going to nike.com
to complete research about Nike) are not as credible as websites that
end in .gov, .edu, or .org.
