English II Pre-AP Calendar
First Six Weeks: August 23 – October 1

August 30th – September 1st
Monday: Vocabulary List #1 (quiz on Friday Sept. 1); discuss timed writing strategies and
expectations; look at AP prompt
Tuesday: look at student samples from AP writing prompt; discuss rubric; work in groups to
assess and evaluate grading
Wednesday/Thursday: go over timed writing prompt (grade to be determined) discuss
accompanying article and take notes concerning diction, tone, and other rhetorical devices; SAT
practice sentences (if time allows)
Friday: vocabulary quiz; peer evaluate timed writings
September 6th – September 10th
Monday – Labor Day Holiday!
Tuesday – feedback on timed writings (reassess if needed no later than Friday, Sept. 10);
introduction to Greek Tragedy/”Antigone” background if time allows
Wednesday/Thursday: continue or begin Greek Tragedy background information; read and
discuss Frost’s poem, “The Road Not Taken”
Friday: start or continue reading, Sophocles’ “Antigone”; discuss themes; “Antigone”multiple
choice objective test scheduled for Monday, September 20th.
September 13th – September 17th
Monday: Vocabulary list #2 (quiz on Friday, Sept. 17); continue reading/discussing “Antigone”
Tuesday: Read/discuss “Antigone”
Wednesday/Thursday: vocabulary practice sentences; continue with “Antigone”
Friday: vocabulary quiz #2; finish reading “Antigone”; HW: Research a song/poem/painting
expressing theme(s) of play; with explanation/cited research and 1-page process (hard copy of
example is required) typed in MLA format. Due Friday, September 24th, grade to be determined
September 20th- September 24th
Monday: Vocabulary list #3 (quiz on Friday, Sept. 24th); “Antigone” objective test
Tuesday: read thematically related non-fiction article(s) and discuss
Wednesday/Thursday: analyze non-fiction pieces using Soapstone strategy and other rhetorical
devices
Friday: Vocabulary quiz #3; research essay due
September 27 – September October 1st
Monday: vocabulary list #4 (quiz Friday, Oct. 1st) TAKS paired reading practice (formative grade)
Tuesday: TBD
Wednesday/Thursday: “Antigone” Timed Writing, grade to be determined
Friday: vocabulary quiz #4; TBD
