Woodbury Leadership Academy Student Council Officer Information Packet 2015-2016 Important Questions What is Student Council? The Student Council of Woodbury Leadership Academy is an organization conducted by student leaders, and supervised by a teacher and the administration. What are Student Council member qualifications? - Be a good citizen Be a hard-working student Be of quality character Be interested in representing and serving WLA students Demonstrate responsible leadership Does not have any behavior demerits What is the purpose of a student Council? The purpose of Student Council is to provide leadership within the school, and to serve the student body, the school, and the community. The Student Council at Woodbury Leadership Academy represents all students’ voices in our school. What are the offices of Student Council? The 2015-2016 Woodbury Leadership Academy Student Council will consist of 4 officer positions ~~ President, Vice President, Historian, and Secretary. When does the Student Council Meet? Student Council Officers meet together one Wednesday morning a month at 8:45AM. The entire Student Council (Officers and Class Representatives) will meet Friday morning of that same week at 8:45AM. Running for Student Council Office First order of business...CONGRATULATE YOURSELF for accepting the challenge! Then, decide which office you prefer to hold on the Council. Next, complete the attached Candidate Nomination Form Your parent/s and a teacher must sign your Nomination Form. Once completed, your form should be given to Mr. Sheehan by 9:30am on Friday, September 18th. Campaigning will take place the week of September 21st. You may display 1-4 posters throughout the school. Posters and display locations must be approved by a teacher or Mr. Hurley. (Please attach posters to walls using only blue tape). On September 24th, Officer Candidates will give a speech to 4th-7th grade WLA students in the auditorium. Speech guidelines are attached. Voting of Council Officers will occur in classrooms after the speeches. Candidates must remove campaign posters by 4:00pm on September 24th. Campaign Speech Guidelines - Get the attention of your audience - share a famous quote, an interesting fact, a personal experience, a short story, etc. State the officer position which you are interested in holding. Discuss your qualifications for the position Share past leadership experiences Discuss personality traits you have that make you the ideal candidate. Discuss specific realistic goals and objectives you hope to accomplish while holding officer position. Finish your speech by reminding your fellow students who you are and what officer position you are running for. End with a great lasting impression! NOTE: Speeches may be a maximum of 3 minutes! WLA Student Council Officer Job Descriptions President: The Student Council President will co-lead all Meetings under the direction of Mr. Sheehan. The President will listen closely to suggestions from Officers, as well as Class Representatives’ reports. S/he will make certain all voices are heard during the meeting. The President will speak at WLA school events, and take an active role in all Student Council projects. Vice President: The Vice President assists the President during Council meetings. If the President is absent, the Vice President takes over the President’s responsibilities (noted above). The Vice President will take an active role in all Student Council projects. Secretary: The Secretary will take attendance and record notes during all Student Council meetings, which should be submitted to Mr. Sheehan within three school days of each meeting. Historian: The Historian will be responsible for maintaining the Student Council bulletin board (photos, articles, captions); newly-updated bulletin boards should be displayed bimonthly. S/he will archive photographs and newspaper articles relating to Student Council activities.
