Over the past twenty years or so, great changes have
taken place in our life. Take my family for example.
My parents contacted others mainly by sending them letters
in the past, but now we call long distance at home. And once
my parents listened to the radio for news and other information,
but now we watch the news and other programs on TV.
Another change is in the housing conditions. When they got
married about twenty years ago, my parents lived in a small
room crowded with furniture, but now we have moved into
a big new three-room apartment. In short, changes in our life
in the past twenty years have brought us comfort and
convenience.

Change in my village
Great changes have taken place in my village. Ten years ago,
the small and low houses of my village lay on the north of
a lake. They produced much waste. As a result, the lake was
seriously polluted. To the west of the village was a sandy
field, which was the source of much dust whenever wind
was blowing. Worse still, a brickyard on the southwest side
of the lake used up a great deal of good soil.
Now the poor houses have been replaced by green trees and
the brickyard by tall buildings. The sandy field that the
villagers used to plough has been covered with fruit trees.
On the lake, now clean and clear, the villagers often spend
their spare time boating and fishing.
In a word, my village has become a modern and green
one.

Dear Mr Smith,
I was so pleased to hear from you and I am writing to tell
you something about my school. You are right. Quite a few
changes have taken place.
On one side of the road there is a new classroom building.
On the other side, where the playground used to be now
stands another new building----our library. In it there are all
kinds of books, newspapers and magazines. The playground
is now in front of the school. We have also planted a lot of
trees in and around the school.
I hope you come and see for yourself some day.
Best wishes
Yours,
Li Hua

Dear Editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about
whether an entrance fee should be charged for parks.
Opinions are divided on the question. 60% of the students
are against the idea of entrance fees. They believe a public
park should be free of charge. People need a place where
they can rest and enjoy themselves. Charging entrance fees
will no doubt keep some people away. What’s more, it will
become necessary to build gates and walls, which will do
harm to the appearance of a city.
On the other hand, 40% think that fees should be charged
because you need money to pay gardeners and other workers,
and to buy plants and young trees. They suggest, however,
fees should be charged low.

Dear Mary,
I’m glad to receive your letter again. You want to know something
about what is going on in our school. In short, great changes have taken
place since our school began to carry out the research-based learning.
In the past, the teachers almost took up all the period, writing on the
blackboard, explaining the points, and answering the questions raised
by themselves. We students are the slaves of study. But now, we’ve
taken up most of the period, discussing the questions raised by the
teachers or ourselves, exchanging our ideas, or solving the problems.
We are now the masters of study.
After class, we enjoy different kinds of activities instead of doing
endless homework. We go to the library to read books, have sports on
the playground and surf the Internet for various kinds of information.
How happy we are now. welcome to our school.
Best wishes.
yours truly
Dear Mary,
I’m glad to receive your letter again. You want to know
something about what is going on in our school.
In the past, the teachers controlled the whole class all
the time. There is no time for us to think or study freely.
What’s more, we had so much homework every night that
we couldn’t go to bed until midnight. We were really the
slaves of study.
To our delight, great changes have taken place in our
class. We can discuss questions, exchange ideas and work
out questions by ourselves. We become the master of study.
We have not only interesting lessons but also wonderful
activities after class, doing sports on the playground, reading
books in the library and surfing Internet.
How happy we are now! welcome to our school.(杨波涛)
Before we began research-based learning, teachers were
the center of the class, they gave us a talk all through the
class, and we were forced to study. But now we have played
an important part in class. We can discuss some questions,
exchange opinions and solve the problems by ourselves.
In the past, the only thing we should do was to finish our
homework after class. On the contrary, we now have many
interesting things to do, for example, surfing on the net,
playing on the play ground, reading books in the library and
so on. We’ve become the master instead of the slaves of the
study.

Since it was a sunny day, she could also use the position

she had come from. Then it would be correct for all the
