Software:
 Each student must purchase a personal Hawkes Learning Systems College Algebra access code
in order to complete assignments and take tests in this course. It is of no value to purchase a
used access code or used software CDs, since a student’s name is embedded in his/her access
code making it nontransferable. However, if you are retaking this course, you can continue
using your old Hawkes College Algebra access code.
 You can purchase an access code with a debit/credit card and download the software directly
from the Hawkes Learning Systems website OR you can purchase a College Algebra software CD
packet from a local bookstore and register the license number on the CD sleeve at the Hawkes
Learning Systems website to obtain your access code.
 If you choose to install the Hawkes College Algebra software on your personal computer,
whether from a CD or from the website, you will be prompted upon installation to enter your
COURSE ID which is ASUCOL. It is very important to load this course ID to ensure that you are
working only the required problems in this curriculum.
 The Hawkes Learning Systems College Algebra Student Instructions document detailing
software installation, getting an access code, enrolling in your instructor's grade book, and
completing/submitting assignments is attached.
Optional Text/E-Book: College Algebra, 2nd Edition, Paul Sisson (not recommended)

Homework:





Homework will be assigned for each section of material covered and will count 20% of the total
grade.
Homework assignments must be completed in the “Certify” mode of the Hawkes software.
Each assignment is mastery-based with two attempts on every problem with a predetermined
number of strikes permitted to achieve mastery. Each student has an unlimited number of
attempts to master each “certification”. As long as mastery is achieved and the certification is
submitted to the instructor’s grade book (your Progress Report) by the due date, the student
will receive a grade of 100% on that assignment.
In general, each assignment will be due according to the attached tentative schedule (see page 4
of the syllabus) at 11:59 pm on the date listed. Certifications submitted up to 2 days after the
due date will receive a grade of 75%, and those submitted more than 2 days after the due date
will receive a grade of 50%.
All homework certifications must be completed online or submitted to the instructor’s grade
book from a saved file. No printed certifications will be accepted.
You are strongly encouraged to complete the “Practice” problems in a section, which are
ordered by level of sophistication, before attempting the homework certification ("Certify"
mode) where the order of problems is random! Students who complete “Practice” have a
better fundamental understanding of the material and, in most cases, are able to “Certify” in
only one attempt.
Tests:

There will be four unit tests during the semester that will collectively count 55% of the total
grade. The test questions will be similar in format to the example problems presented in class
and the homework problems encountered in the "Practice" and "Certify" modes in the software.

ALL homework certifications for each test must be completed and submitted to the
instructor’s grade book prior to the scheduled test time or the test cannot be taken.
 You must present a photo ID to take every exam.
 It is your responsibility to make sure (prior to the test dates) that you are able to log on to the
classroom computers using your ASTATE user name and password! Contact ASU IT Services to
remedy any login issues.
 Each unit test will cover the sections of material listed below. See page 4 of the syllabus for the
exact test dates.
Test 1: Chapter 1 Review, 2.1a, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 2.6
Test 2: 3.2, 3.3, 3.6, 4.1, 4.2a, 4.2b, 4.5
Test 3: 4.6, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5
Test 4: 5.1, 6.1a, 6.1b, 3.5, 8.1, 8.7
Final Exam:



The mandatory final examination is comprehensive and will count 25% of the total grade.
ALL certifications for the entire semester must be completed and submitted to the instructor’s
grade book prior to the scheduled final exam time or the final cannot be taken. There will be
no exceptions.
The final exam percentage score will replace the lowest unit test grade provided the final exam
percentage is higher than the lowest unit test grade.
Final Grade Composition:


The cumulative percentage total for the tests (55%), homework (20%), and the final examination
(25%) is 100%.
The following scale will be used to determine your final grade.
A
90-100%
B
80-89%
C
70-79%
D
60-69%
F
below 60%
Make-up Policy:

Make every effort NOT to miss a test! If you miss a test for any reason a grade of “0” will be
assigned.
 Only ONE test can be made-up OR retaken during regular class time on Test Make-up/Retake
Day (see page 4).
 If you must miss a test for a scheduled ASU function, you must notify the instructor in advance
so arrangements can be made to take the test prior to the event; make-up tests will not be
given after events.
Attendance:
This class has required attendance based on the Arkansas State University Freshmen/Sophomore
Attendance Policy. In the event of excessive absences, a grade of “FN” may be assigned. Attendance is
the key to a student’s success in mathematics.
Calculators:
Any scientific or graphing calculator that is allowed on the ACT test is allowed in this course. However,
ACT prohibited calculators and cell phone calculators are NOT allowed. Students that attempt to use
these calculators on a test will be guilty of academic dishonesty. If you have a question regarding your
calculator, see your instructor.
Personal Computers:

Each student can load the Hawkes software on as many personal computers as they wish but
are responsible for keeping them up-to-date. Periodically, Hawkes Learning Systems may
publish updates to correct program errors, so students are advised to stay informed of these
updates to keep their software current.
 Each student is responsible for his/her own personal computer. Make sure that the date and
time on your computer are correct so that all certifications can be properly submitted.

If you encounter technical problems, contact your instructor, Hawkes Tech Support (1-800-4269538), or the ASU ITS Helpline (972-3933).
Academic Dishonesty:



Cheating on an exam or homework; theft or attempted theft of exam questions; possession of
exam questions prior to the time of the examination; talking during an exam; attempting to
access a website during an exam; or the attempted use of unauthorized aids (cell phones,
cheat sheets, unapproved calculators, etc.) shall be offenses subject to appropriate penalties.
On test days, you should NOT have your cell phone on your desk area (including the computer
tower), on your chair, or on your person (including pockets). If your instructor (or another
proctor) sees your phone in any of these places, you will be guilty of academic dishonesty and
fail the test. If you should bring your phone with you to class on the day of an exam, you
should turn it OFF and either 1) leave it in a closed backpack under your chair, 2) leave it in a
closed purse under your chair, or 3) leave it face down on the floor under your chair.
The penalty for commission of any offense set out above is an "F" for that assignment/test
and/or failure in the course and referral to the Office of Student Affairs for further action.
Student Services:
Students who require academic adjustments in the classroom due to a disability must first register with
ASU Disability Services. Following registration and within the first two weeks of class, please contact
your instructor to discuss accommodations and submit a copy of your modification card to your
instructor. Appropriate arrangements can be made to ensure equal access to the course.
Class Etiquette:
In order to maintain a positive learning environment, be respectful of your fellow students and your
instructor. To limit distractions, please make every effort to be on time and do not leave early without
prior approval (except of course in the case of an emergency). All cell phones and other electronic
devices should be turned OFF and put away during the class period. (See above for the cell phone policy
for exam days.) Please do not eat or drink in the classroom. No tobacco of any kind should be used in
the classroom and smoking is prohibited on the ASU campus in accordance with Arkansas Act 734,
known as the Clean Air on Campus Act.
Financial Aid:
If pending Financial Aid is going to cause a delay in purchasing the required access code please notify
your instructor. Special circumstances can allow for obtaining a temporary access code.
Note: This is a general policy statement and is subject to change by the instructor.
The following is a tentative schedule. It is subject to change by the instructor.
