Placement is based on Asset NS<32 or Compass PALG<34 Course Description: Developmental Mathematics Basics is intended for students who need assistance in basic arithmetic skills. Based on assessment of student needs, instruction includes performing the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents. Application skills are emphasized. Purpose of Course: This non-transferable course is designed to teach and strengthen basic math skills and serves as preparation for Math 032. Required Texts: Developmental Mathematics by D. Recognize the relative size of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and be able to rank them using the symbols <, > and =; 2. Perform computations on whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percent without the use of a table or a calculator; 3. Solve problems containing fractions and mixed numbers; 4. Develop estimating skills in order to eliminate careless errors and recognize reasonable solutions; 5. Instructional Agreement: This syllabus is an agreement between the student and instructor concerning course objectives, course content, grading and other policies and procedures particular to the course as well as any posted program, departmental, and divisional policies. It is also the student’s responsibility to become familiar with the Student Handbook/College Catalog found in the Student Resource area of Blackboard. Course Policies: Attendance: If you miss a class, you are responsible for learning the material you missed. Read the book, complete the assignments and learn the material before coming back for the next class. Note: If you are recorded absent for more than 20 percent of the course contact hours, (regardless if you have a failing or passing grade), you will be administratively withdrawn from the course. Coming to class late or leaving early is factored into this 20%. Blackboard and GTC gmail: Blackboard will be used to access online documents (syllabus, course outline, and assignments). GTC gmail will be used to communicate important course information. Students should regularly access both Blackboard and GTC gmail to keep up to date with course announcements and assignments. Homework/Quizzes & Certification: Homework will be done online using the Hawkes Learning System software. In this software you will study, practice and “certify” on each topic covered in this class. To complete each assignment you must demonstrate your mastery by passing the certification quiz at 80%. This will earn you 100% on your homework assignment. Each homework assignment for a class will be due at the beginning of the next class period. If you submit assignments late, you may still receive partial credit for the first 5 days after each due date, but there will be a late penalty of 10% per day subtracted from your score. Any assignments completed after the late period will be recorded at 50%. Your 3 lowest homework assignment grades will be dropped. Registering Into and Using HLS: New students using Hawkes Learning System should view the video in Blackboard on how to load HLS on your computer and how to register into your HLS class. There is also a document posted on Blackboard with written stepby-step directions that can be used. A returning student who has used HLS in a previous semester should log into HLS, and at the Progress Report page click on the button labeled Transfer. The new instructor’s name will be needed as well as the course and section number to transfer yourself into the new section. Activities: Consistent participation in class activities, problem-solving practice, group work, in-class quizzes, discussions (in class or on Blackboard), and application experiences is a central part of your learning experience. Good communication including clear and correct English is expected. The work shown contains little or no evidence of understanding of key concept(s) and contains multiple major errors. 2 Beginning Work shown contains evidence of understanding the key concept or concepts, but work contains multiple errors. 3 Developing Solution is correct and work shown clearly exhibits use of key concept(s) and steps, but contains minor/ careless errors. 4 Exemplary Solution is correct and work shown effectively uses key concept(s) and appropriate steps with no errors evident.
