During the New South time period the state of Georgia attempted an image change.
They wanted to be seen as an industrial center, instead of a state that only produced
cotton.
The state of Georgia helped the WWI efforts by creating military training bases
and installations are building victory gardens.
During WWII Bell Aircraft in Marietta built B-29 Bombers (war planes), the state
also served as military training bases. Our state was able to easily train and deploy
military members because of our climate, and the use of our railways and
shipping ports.
This period following the founding of our country marks a great change in the state of Georgia. Georgia
settlers were moving west because inventions like the cotton gin and railroad opened up farmland and
resources. However, this westward expansion and technological growth came at a cost. This period of
time would also mark great bloodshed and turmoil with the removal of the native populations.
The period of Reconstruction was time of great political, social and racial change in the Southern US
following the Civil War. Many historians would call it the second Civil War because of all the conflict and
social change that occurred in the South.
The Great Depression was a time period of desperation. People lost their land
and homes due to bad debt, the drought and boll weevil. The New Deal brought
programs that helped to build parks, roads and schools.
Though African-Americans had been fighting for civil rights before the Civil War, the “modern”
Civil Rights Movement finally achieved many
of the goals that African-Americans had been working toward for centuries. These included
achieving voting rights and the end to government sponsored segregation.
Becoming the
9th largest state in the United States, Georgia produced a President and a Speaker of
the House. Economically, Georgia became one of the wealthiest states in the South, and,
in fact, the entire United States. Atlanta, being the headquarters of many national and
international businesses was awarded the Olympic
games in this era.
Explain significant factors that affected the development of Georgia as part of the growth of the United
States from the time it created a new, independent government & the antebellum era. Evaluate the
impact of land policies pursued by Georgia after the creation of a new independent government. Defend
how technological developments impacted Georgia’s growth. Analyze the events that led to the removal
of the Creeks and Cherokees.
This period of history marks a growing divide between Georgia and
the northern states. While the northern states’ economy was based
on industry, the southern economy was based upon agriculture,
primarily on slave producing cotton. This ethical and economic divide
would push the nation closer to war resulting in the Civil War.
Georgia transformed from a rural to an urban state as the changes in farm
technology ended the need for a large agricultural work force. During this
time period, Atlanta became a large enough city to field three major league
sports teams.
The bloodiest war in American history was a defining moment in
military history because it is considered the beginning of modern
warfare. The War caused massive casualties, massive destruction to
the South and it change the face of this country. The War also gave a
new birth of freedom with the free of the slaves and introduced a
period of conflict known as Reconstruction.
Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of both the original Georgia
constitution and the Articles of Confederation. Assess how weaknesses in
the Articles of Confederation led to a need to revise the Articles. Describe
the role of Georgia at the Constitutional Convention including the role of
Abraham Baldwin and William Few. Describe the reasons why Georgia
ratified the new constitution.
The Roaring 20’s, known for new conveniences and flair, came to
Georgia, but were short lived. The boll weevil and drought
destroyed our cotton crops and negatively impacted our economy
during the 1920’s.
