Geology Rock Types By: Rich Saferian Three types of Rock Igneous Rocks Sedimentary Rocks Metamorphic Rock Igneous Rocks Igneous rocks are made directly from cooling magma Igneous rocks can be made under the earths surface or when the magma erupts from volcanoes can cool on the earths surface. Some examples are Granite Scoria Pumice Obsidian Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary Rocks are made from eroded pieces of the earth that come to rest in bodies of water. Over time layer after layer of eroded earth form together and form a Sedimentary Rock Some Examples are Sandstone Limestone Shale Gypsum Metamorphic Rocks Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been “morphed” into another kind of rock Metamorphic rocks were at one time either Igneous rocks or Sedimentary rocks. These rocks are formed by pressure being put on Igneous or Sedimentary rocks which in time changes them. Some examples are Schist Gneiss Web Links http://sln.fi.edu/fellows/payton/rocks/cre ate/index.html http://www.scarborough.k12.me.us/wis/t eachers/dtewhey/webquest/nature/rocks. htm Concept Map Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQUe9 C40NEE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQtPL GuRNrI
