University Course Catalog Description An introduction to sport and exercise science with emphasis in fitness, recreation, physical activity, and human performance. II. Course Overview This course will examine the various aspects of Sport and Exercise Science including exploring the occupations available and current controversial topics in the field. III. Course Objectives By the end of the course students will be able to: 1. Understand challenges and changes that have taken place in history and present day in Physical Education, Exercise Science and Sport. 2. Identify and understand sub disciplines of Physical Education, Exercise Science and Sport. 3. Understand current and future issues regarding sport and exercise science. 4. Develop and defend objective opinions regarding key issues in Sport and Exercise Science. 5. Effectively communicate their ideas verbally in a clear, concise manner. IV. Grade Dissemination Graded tests and materials in this course will be returned individually only by request. It is against UCF policy to e-mail you your grades directly. This is done in an attempt to protect confidentiality. IX. Course Policies: Grades Late Work Policy: Homework assignments and other late submissions will be assessed a half letter grade deduction for each day that they are late. Extra Credit Policy: There are three possibilities for extra credit throughout the semester; however, students will be able to attain a MAXIMUM of 10 points throughout the semester. The options are as follows: 1. Participate in a study conducted in the Human Performance Lab (10 pts). 2. Recruit an individual to participate in a study conducted at the Human Performance Lab (5 pts). 3. Read and complete a one page written review of an empirical article relevant to the students’ particular interest (10 pts possible). Grades of "Incomplete": The current university policy concerning incomplete grades will be followed in this course. Incomplete grades are given only in situations where unexpected emergencies prevent a student from completing the course and the remaining work can be completed the next semester. Your instructor is the final authority on whether you qualify for an incomplete. Incomplete work must be finished by the end of the subsequent semester or the “I” will automatically be recorded as an “F” on your transcript. X. Professionalism Policy: Per university policy and classroom etiquette; mobile phones, iPods, etc. must be silenced during all classroom and lab lectures. Use of iPods is permitted during the activity portion of the class; however, phone use is not permitted at any time. Academic Conduct Policy: Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. As in all University courses, The Golden Rule Rules of Conduct will be applied. At the instructor’s discretion, you may also receive a failing grade for the course. Confirmation of such incidents can also result in expulsion from the University. XII. Important Dates to Remember Spring Break (No Class) Final Exam XIII. March 4th Monday, April 29, 1:00 PM to 3:50 PM Description of Graded Evaluations Attendance: (60 pts.) Students will be expected to attend class every day. Each class period will be worth 4 points. Quizzes: (60 pts.) There will be a 5 pt quiz every week we have class. The quiz will be projected at the front of the room starting at 10:30 until 10:35. If the student arrives after this point, they will not be permitted to take the quiz. Assignments: (80 pts.) There will be three assignments throughout the semester: Occupation descriptions (30 pts. Each): Each student will complete two descriptions of their choosing. Occupation descriptions will consist of two components. The first component is a written review of the specific occupation; 1-2 pages (10 points). The second component is a spreadsheet highlighting specific aspects of the occupation. The spreadsheet will consist of at least seven key concerns relating to the occupation (can include, but is not limited to certifications accepted/required, salary/wage, etc.). Additionally, it will include three employers in the field, and what they accept/require, pay, etc. One paper (20 pts.) This paper will be on the students’ personal philosophy in regards to Physical Education, Exercise Science and Sport. We will go over this in more detail during class. Class Project: (100 pts.) The class project will consist of a 10-15 minute persuasive presentation on one side of a controversial topic. Students will select the topic they are interested in, and will be randomly assigned to the stance they will take (for or against). Each group will have 5-6 members. Topics that will be discussed are as follows: 1. Should performance enhancing agents be allowed in sport? 2. Should a four year degree and state approved licensing exam be required for personal trainers? 3. Should individuals be required to be a RD (registered dietician) to give any kind of nutritional advice? 4. Should children specialize in sports prior to age 14 or high school? 5. Should college athletes be paid? 6. Should Title IX be removed?
