Cities around Suzhou: Shanghai
Shanghai is located in the East China. It is one of
central four municipalities of China.
In the 19th century, Shanghai was only a small
fishery town. However, due to its good harbor
position, Shanghai developed rapidly and even
became one of the foreign trading ports of China.
After reform and open policy, Shanghai started to
progress vigorously, and then has become China’s
biggest economic center and the world’s biggest
trading harbor.
Also, because of its long history and deep culture,
Shanghai is also a good choice for tourists at
present. Now Shanghai is not only the national
center of high-tech, trade, finance and information,
but also the international center of cultural and
economic exchange.
Cities around Suzhou: Nanjing
Nanjing is an ancient capital of Six Dynasties with a history
of more than 2500 years, and also called Metropolitan of Ten
Empires. They are the Eastern Wu, Eastern Jin, Song, Qi,
Liang, Chen, Southern Tang, early Ming, Taiping Heavenly
Kingdom and the Republic of China. So Nanjing is renowned
as a historical and cultural city.
It has many historic sites including Ming tombs that are on the
UNESCO World Heritage List. The Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yatsen, designed by Chinese architect, was completed in 1929, to
memorize the "Nation Father" of China. Climbing up 392 steps,
you can enjoy the bird view of Nanjing.
Followed is Ming Tomb which is the tomb of Zhuyuanzhang,
the stone statues of officials and animals as the sacrifice. You
can also visit Zhanyuan Garden with 600 years history. Some
relics of Taiping Heaven Farmer Rebellion are on display there.
Then you can go to Confucius Temple. It is more like an open
market, next to Qinghuai River, snacks and souvenirs could be
found there.
Cities around Suzhou: Hangzhou
Hangzhou
is renowned for its tranquility and
beauty. It has many beautiful folk tales and legends
about how it came to being and how the West Lake
was formed.
One of the most beautiful tales was how heavenly
beings Jade Dragon and the Gold Phoenix found a
white jade on an island beside the Milky Way. They
spent many years sculpting it and it became a
beautiful pearl. All the trees and flowers touched by
its rays would flourish and blossom. However, the
pearl was discovered by the Heavenly Queen
Mother and she tried to take the pearl by force.
During the tussle, the Heavenly Queen Mother
accidentally dropped the pearl and it landed on the
earth to become the beautiful Western Lake. The
Jade Dragon and the Gold Phoenix followed the
pearl to the earth and transformed into the Jade
Dragon Mountain and the Phoenix Mountain to
guard the lake forever.

Testimonials
Liu Weiyuan
2012 Winter Immersion Program Participant
School of Computing, National University of Singapore
“The gains derived from this trip are plentiful, and I’m thankful for being given the chance to be selected for this
program. This program has alerted me of the necessity to re-evaluate myself, in terms of my career path, bonds
that I form and could extend to even as far as daily choices that I make.”
Ho Huiling
2012 Architecture Immersion Program Participant
Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore
“Architecture is not just about buildings, rooms or space which had been always emphasized in school. We
have to see beyond all those elements and understand that the study of architecture is in fact about
understanding ecologies and creating art pieces that invoke resonance within us. This, to me is the most
valuable lesson that I have learnt during this trip.”
Romain Bonvarlet
2013 Summer Immersion Program Participant
EDHEC Business School
“This trip has ended, but the memories will stay forever. Thanks for everything! It is the most unforgettable
experience ever that adds color in my life.”
Thanesh S/O Manoselvam
2013 Summer Immersion Program Participant
Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore
“The whole programme was well planned and the lessons were conducted in very professional learning
environment. The thing I loved most about the programme was how much emphasis was accorded to field trips
and sightseeing activities. Learning was taken out of the classroom as much as possible and this gave me a
new and insightful perspective on the economy, culture and history of China.”
