Cell Cycle & Mitosis Puzzle
1. Cut out the pictures of the stages of the Cell Cycle.
2. On a piece of construction paper, glue the pictures in the correct order. DO NOT glue them down until
you are certain that they are in the proper order. Leave space between each picture for labeling.
3. Label the phase of each picture (Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase or Telophase). Many of the
phases will have more than one picture. Put all of the pictures for any particular phase together and then
label the group. Some pictures may be in between phases; label the two phases to which the picture
belongs to.
4. Under the labeled phase, on a piece of cut out lined paper, write a brief, but accurate, description of
what is happening at each of the phases IN YOUR OWN WORDS. It can be in list form.
5. To the diagrams, label the: nuclear envelope (membrane), centrioles, spindle fibers, chromatin, sister
chromatids, equator, poles, pinching in (cleavage furrow) and nucleolus. You do not need to label each
picture but be certain that each part is labeled somewhere on a picture.
After you have completed the puzzle, answer the following questions.
A. Why does DNA need to make a copy of itself before mitosis can begin?
B. What would happen if the DNA did not make a copy of itself first in Interphase?
C. Why is the Cell Cycle important to our survival?
D. Does the Cell Cycle and mitosis stop happening in our bodies ever? Explain your answer.
