Preliminary Major Theme Ideas and Other Random Notes:
Hi John/Team,
Remember the Titans (2000): What a great film! It is beyond me how I managed to
have not seen this movie until now.
This is really just an assembly of abstract thoughts. I know that many of us are already
making strides, but here are a few general ideas. I understand that some of this may not
directly link theory to adolescent culture. If anything seems useful to anyone, you are
more than welcome to incorporate into your mix:

Major Theme Ideas:

Intro: “Football is larger than life.”
o At the end of the film we reach the conclusion that the opposite is true,
however…as it turns out, through the transformative experience via
football, the students’ lives and their community were enhanced.

Moral Leadership: Should be rather simple to tie-in some adolescent moral
development theory here. The Hartshorne and May Studies. (Snowman, et. al.,
p.64-5.).
o Coach Boone
o Gerry Bertier, Team Captain
o Julius Campbell “Big Julius,” Team Captain

Values: Continuing Moral Development:
o Student’s collectively reflected upon and modified their values…focused
on common values and interests.
o God, religion
o (Football) Family. Who’s your daddy? Brotherhood.
o Shared Goals: Football, “perfection.”
o Accountability (Petey Jones’ fumble)
o Consequences

Individual Identity: Certainly Erikson’s Psychosocial Development theory at play
here. (Identity vs. Role Confusion). (Snowman et. al., p.
o James Marcia’s Identity Statuses. (Snowman, et. al., p-33).
 Identity Confusion:
 Foreclosure:
 Moratorium
 Identity Achievement:



Group Dynamics: Four Stages of Team Development
o Forming: Training camp: “Racial Integration” This element is very
important, especially when considering the social context, 1971.
o Storming: Conflicts: Add in…numerous.
o Norming: Gettysburg as a major turning point. One-on-one interviews.
o Performing: State Championship, team united, extended effect on
community.

Minor Themes:
o “Survival”: Coach Boone
o Strategy
Film Score: None. I could not really find anything related to the music but there may be
something there.
