ENGINEERED WOOD SIDING ADOPTION SOARS AMONG BUILDERS
AND REMODELERS
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 4, 2014) – Builders and remodelers often resist change when they’ve
grown comfortable with certain products. But they are quickly adopting LP® SmartSide® Trim &
Siding (treated engineered wood siding) because they seek a competitive advantage. They
want to protect their reputations and differentiate their businesses and like the beauty, durability,
warranty and ease of installation of LP SmartSide products. This cascading effect gives even more
builders and remodelers the confidence to use LP SmartSide products.
The number of builder and remodeler conversions to LP SmartSide products increased by
63 percent from 2010 to 2013. Since 2010, sales of LP SmartSide lap and trim have grown
an impressive 73 percent, from $173 million to $301 million annually.
LP SmartSide usage gains are in new construction nationwide and repair and remodel (R&R) in the
upper Midwest. LP SmartSide siding is replacing fiber cement as the upgrade choice from vinyl in
the North and as standard cladding in the South.
LP SmartSide products have more than 16 years of successful performance and offer a 5/50year warranty compared to some 25- to 30-year fiber cement siding warranties. Go to
www.lpcorp.com for complete warranty details.
LP’s proprietary SmartGuard® process provides additional strength to LP SmartSide products and
helps them resist moisture, termites and fungal decay. “Builders and remodelers are choosing and
recommending LP SmartSide products for exceptional looks and real-world performance in tough
climates. Consumers are demanding LP SmartSide products as they discover the benefits for their
own homes,” said Ben Skoog, LP SmartSide business marketing manager.
LP SmartSide siding exceeded all previous sales records in 2013, including the peak housing start
years 2004-2006. LP will continue its investments in LP SmartSide product sales, marketing and
technical resources to meet what is expected to be a record-setting sales year in 2014.

To help keep pace with demand from builders and remodelers, LP expanded LP SmartSide
production capacity at its Two Harbors, Minn., plant in Q1 2013 and is slated to expand capacity in
Q1 2014 at its Tomahawk, Wis., plant. These expansion investments total approximately $30 million.
The Two Harbors plant is increasing production by 25 percent. The Tomahawk plant is projected for
a 50 percent capacity increase.
The LP SmartSide brand is growing to keep supply matched to demand. LP is also weighing options
for future expansions given the medium- to long-term projections for the product line. LP is creating
more supply for high-growth products like trim, lap and soffits. Given the lingering challenges of the
U.S. economy, this attests to LP SmartSide’s growth with builders and remodelers as they gain
understanding of the benefits of LP SmartSide products and LP expands its in-markets penetration.
“LP SmartSide products are a business enhancement for builders and remodelers, helping them
differentiate and protect themselves from the price fluctuations of fiber cement or vinyl siding. Using
LP SmartSide products can be a profitable advantage to builders and remodelers,” Skoog said.
