What is wood modification via acetylation method?
Description of Acetylation
Acetylated
wood
element

Acetylation effectively
changes the free hydroxyls
within the wood into stable
and moisture resistant
Acetyl groups. This is done
by reacting the wood with
acetic anhydride, which
derived from Acetic Acid
(vinegar)

Acetylation dramatically
improves the fibreboards
durability, stability, coatings
performance and service life

What tests have been done on Medite Tricoya Extreme?
Processing
Medite Tricoya Extreme can be cut, coated, coloured, sanded, glued, machined
and fastened the same as any other high performing wood fibreboard – allowing
users all the freedom normally associated with MDF but in extreme applications.
Fabricating
The panel may be cut, machined and used in
exactly the same way as the rest of the Medite
(MDF) range.
Coating
Conventional water-based paint coatings may be
used to decorate the panel.
Laminating
Melamine papers, high pressure laminates and
foils can be adhered to the product.
Sanding
The acetylated wood fibreboard panel is delivered
ex-mill with a 150 grit sanded finish and can be
sanded with fine sandpaper to achieve a smooth
finish.
Gluing
Since acetylated MDF is drier than other wood
panel products and absorbs water in a different
manner, curing times of adhesives may be
different. Recommended adhesives are PU,
Epoxy, PRF and EPI.
Fixing
Due to some residual acetic acid in the panel,
stainless steel fasteners & fixings with A2 or A4
(EN1008-1) quality or AISI type 304 or 316
should be used
Fire rating
Panels achieve a fire class rating of euro class D
within the Euro classification as with most woodbased panel products
Coating performance warranties
 A number of coating manufacturers have successfully trialled the
acetylated wood fibreboard
 These coating companies now offer extended coating warranties
on exterior joinery and cladding manufactured from Medite Tricoya
Extreme and with a fully factory finished approved system.
 Warranties of up to 10-15 years respectively on opaque finishes
 Other leading coating companies are working on their own testing
and warranties
Service life cost
BMTRADA evaluated the service
life cost of cladding:
 Initial cost of coated MTE in line
with coated exterior grade
plywood
 MTE has much lower cost during
total service life than exterior
graded plywood due to low long
maintenance intervals
 Financial advantage from a very
early stage on
 No need for replacement or repair when maintenance is poor
