All of our schools have computer labs and access to microphones. The computer labs are equipped with Windows and have Microsoft PowerPoint software. The purpose of this activity is to have students practice newly learned PowerPoint skills in the computer lab and to introduce themselves to their new class in this “Back to School” activity. The students will come prepared to the lab with handouts of the templates already completed and ready to input into the PowerPoint template. Most of the students are familiar with accessing documents on the G drive where the template will be. The teacher will review things such as saving presentations, inputting a recorded introduction, adding a macro to their PowerPoint, and inputting information before going to the computer lab. The teacher will have also taken pictures of the students and asked them to bring in pictures that can be uploaded onto their personal disk drives ahead of time so that they are ready for the computer lab. The time may have to be extended based upon PowerPoint experience of the students, so the mini-quiz can be taken during another session or by using laptop carts in the classroom. Since we do not know the size of our upcoming classes, our class size says “TBD” or “To be determined.” Materials: Photographs, rubric, Template handouts (created by teacher), computers, PowerPoint, camera, projector (to display example PPT and for demonstrations) ©1997 Anne Arundel County Public Schools • 2540/17 • DPS/SG • MS Word 6.0 • Page 1 Instructional Delivery Opening Activities/Motivation The teacher will ask students for a show of hands for how many are experienced with PowerPoint. The teacher will then show the students the PowerPoint example presentation of herself to show what their end project might look like. Procedure 1. The students will then be given a packet of the slides in the presentation in a handout form so they can think about what they will do and write in their information so lab time is used efficiently. 2. The teacher will review basic practices such as logging onto the computer and accessing the G drive. 3. The teacher will have students log on to their computers and open the PowerPoint template from the G drive. 4. The teacher will demonstrate how to save their files as macro enabled and to make sure they are in “kiosk” mode. 5. Students will go through each slide using their handouts, inputting text, clip art, and photographs into their presentation. 6. The teacher will go around with the microphone helping students to record their sound clip and attaching it in their presentation. 7. As students finish adding information and graphics they may also change backgrounds and font styles. 8. The teacher will circulate around the classroom and assist students as needed. 9. When all the students have completed their information, the teacher will demonstrate how to link the quiz buttons to the correct macro using the projector and teacher computer in the lab. 10. Once students have added the macros and their PowerPoint has been approved, the teacher will then have students select a partner or assign partners for students to switch computers. (This may need to happen in another class period depending on lab times). Assessment/Evaluation Students’ work will be graded using a rubric that will be given to them in advance so that they know what must be included in the presentation. Closure Students will take the mini quiz and review what they have learned about each other from the PowerPoint. ©1997 Anne Arundel County Public Schools • 2540/17 • DPS/SG • MS Word 6.0 • Page 2
