This year we will be using the book list provided by the Providence Community Libraries. Our program is designed to help our students understand that reading can be an enjoyable activity. We also encourage students to recognize that reading is a skill that improves with practice. These books are available at the Providence Community Libraries. Most books not on the shelves at PCL may be accessed through the statewide inter library loan system. Please consult your local librarian for details. During the summer months, all students are required to do the following: o o o Read three (3) or more selections from the list Complete a project for (1) of the selections (5 possible projects are attached) Write a book review for the other 2 books (sample review attached) Projects and book reviews will be collected during the first week of school. If you complete the summer reading assignments for Nathan Bishop and are hoping to challenge your child with additional titles, please note that the PCL has created an extensive list of suggested summer reading. Enjoy your summer and happy reading! Your design will be seen in video stores throughout the country. Create a picture for the advertisement. Include main characters and the actors or actresses who will play the role. Include an exciting scene that will attract movie goers into the theatre. Write the genre of the movie (mystery, action, non-fiction, fantasy, etc.). Choose quotes (at least 3) from the book that will make people even more interested in seeing the movie. Write a brief, but complete review of the book (at least one paragraph). Do not give away the ending! Include the title, author, and director (your name). Book Jacket Create a new and improved book jacket for the novel you have just read. Model your book jacket after others that have caught your eye. Front Cover Title and author of your book New and original cover design Back Write a brief, but complete review of the book (at least one paragraph). Do not give away the ending! Inside As a professional book critic, write a review of the book. Include at least three reasons why you would or would not recommend this book. Rate the book using a five-point scale. (1 being poor and 5 being excellent) Indicate the audience that might be most interested in reading this book. Newspaper Cover Story You will become a reporter for the local newspaper in the town your novel takes place in. You must: Create the name of the newspaper. Write two articles about events that took place in your book. Write from two different characters points of view. Include a catchy title for your articles. Dear Diary When people keep a diary or a journal, they write their reactions to various events that have happened to them. Naturally, they tell them from their own point of view. Included in these diary writings are the emotions that they felt when these events occurred. Usually, individuals are very honest as they write about what has happened to them and how they feel about the events and the people who were involved in them. People can tell their diaries things that they might not tell their best friends. Pretend that you are one of the characters in the book that you have read. Write at least five separate diary entries discussing what has happened to you. People often react to what is said to them. Therefore, if possible, you might want to include a quote that was stated by one of the characters and why it upset the person that you are writing about. Comic Strips Pretend that the book that you have just read is being turned into a comic strip. You have been hired to draw the pictures and tell the story in comic strip format. You can create your comic strip on poster board, using an online cartoon maker (be certain you are able to print it out), or in an actual book format. You can draw the characters and the scenes or use the computer to get the pictures. If you have excellent handwriting, you can fill in the conversation bubbles by hand. Otherwise, do it on the computer and then paste them on your finished product. Your final product should have at least 10 boxes.
