The decision
process and
actions of people
involved in buying
and using products

behaviour.
Consumer buying behaviour is not concerned
with the purchase of items for business use.

Consumer buying
behaviour is the
buying behaviour of
ultimate consumers,
those who purchase
products for
personal or
household use.
Consumers usually want
to create and maintain a
collection of products that
satisfy their needs and
wants in both the present
and future.
 To achieve this objective,
consumers make many
purchasing decisions.



Consumer decisions can be
classified into three broad
categories:
Routine response
behaviour;
Limited decision-making;
Extensive decisionmaking.
Products are purchased almost automatically

A consumer practices
routine response
behaviour when
buying frequently
purchased, low cost
items that need very
little search and
decision effort.
This type requires time for information
gathering and deliberation.

Buyers engage in
limited decisionmaking when they
buy products
occasionally and when
they need to obtain
information about an
unfamiliar brand in a
familiar product
category.
Extensive decisionmaking



Involves unfamiliar,
expensive or infrequently
bought products.
The buyer uses many
criteria to evaluate
alternative brands
spends much time seeking
information and
comparing alternative
brands before deciding on
the purchase.
Impulse buying
Involves no planning but a powerful,
persistent urge to buy something
immediately.
 For some individuals, impulse buying may
be the dominant buying behaviour.

