Warren Feld (1069 characters)
Warren has been beading and making jewelry over the past 25 years, from bead stringing, bead
weaving, and micro-macrame to wire working and silver smithing. In 2000, Warren founded The
Center For Beadwork & Jewelry Arts (CBJA), an educational program in Nashville, TN. The program, and
its 12 instructors, approach education from the Design Perspective – a teaching focus on how to make
functional, material, and aesthetic choices. In 2008, Warren’s “Canyon Sunrise” necklace was selected
as Finalist, 4th Place, in SWAROVSKI’s Be Naturally Inspired Design Contest. His piece "Little
Tapestries/Ghindia" — was juried into the book SHOWCASE 500 BEADED JEWELRY, Lark Publications.
2012. He is working to bring the CBJA curriculum online as LearnToBead.net. He is currently writing a
jewelry design series entitled “How To Bead A Rogue Elephant.” Owner, Be Dazzled Beads in Nashville,

color play, adaptive of traditions to contemporary design, experimental.
Kathleen (945 characters)
Beadweaving since 1997, Kathleen designs jewelry with a particular sensitivity to color, color blending,
and wearability. As a teacher at the Center for Beadwork & Jewelry Arts in Nashville, TN, and as faculty
on LearnToBead.net, she has taught bead weaving stitches based on a comprehensive design-oriented
curriculum which includes the history, technique, and variations of a particular stitch for the past 7
years. Kathleen has appeared in Beadwork Magazine 4 times, Bead Trends, and Diane Fitzgerald’s
Netted Bead Work. In 2011, she was a finalist in the Seed Bead Jewelry Making Contest sponsored by
Fire Mountain. Kathleen is a Master Teaching Artist with the Wolf Trap “Early Learning Through The
Arts” program, and workshop leader for the John F. Kennedy Center’s professional development for
teachers program. She works closely with the Tennessee Arts Commission and The Tennessee

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner/Intermediate
PREREQUISITES: Comfortable using seed beads and needle and thread
VERY SHORT SEXY DESCRIPTION: (1-2 sentences; should mention primary technique)
Express the joy in your life with this South African ritual-style piece! Utilize several variations of the
Ndebele Stitch, including flat, 3 types of spiral tubes, rapid and slow increasing and decreasing.
SHORT DESCRIPTION: (25-50 words)
This Mother’s Celebration Bracelet is a symbolic representation of joy in a woman’s life, with great
interplay among color, texture and fluidity. We put the Ndebele Stitch through its paces: doing it flat

different Ndebele techniques for creating spiraling tubes. Design elements discussed: managing thread
tension, dimensionality, edging.

PRIMARY TECHNIQUE/S: Ndebele Stitch, Modified Ndbele/Brick Stitch, Book-Binding Stitch, Ladder
Stitch, Color Simultaneity Effects
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate/Advanced
PREREQUISITES: Comfortable using seed beads and needle and thread. Previous experience with
Ndebele stitch helpful.
VERY SHORT SEXY DESCRIPTION: (1-2 sentences; should mention primary technique)
Create a sophisticated, contemporary Etruscan-style collar! Layer two Ndebele stitched strips, slightly
curving the interior edge and embellishing with chain.
SHORT DESCRIPTION: (25-50 words)
In this Etruscan Collar, we incorporate contemporary design and beadweaving techniques to bring about
senses of sophistication, dimensionality, and clever craftsmanship. We discuss the roles of bead shapes
and color selections, particularly in terms of simultaneity effects, in this 2-layered Ndebele Stitch piece.
We use a modified Ndebele/Brick Stitch to attach our two Ndebele Stitch layers together and create a
curved interior edge, and then a book-binding stitch to add a chain embellishment.

WORKSHOP: CONTEMPORIZING TRADITIONAL JEWELRY: THE ETRUSCAN
BUTTERFLY BRACELET
INSTRUCTOR: Warren Feld
PRIMARY TECHNIQUE/S: Peyote Stitch, Brick Stitch, Simple Wire Working, Playing with Components,
Applying Strategies for Contemporizing Traditional Jewelry
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate/Advanced
PREREQUISITES: Comfortable using seed beads and needle and thread. Knowledge of brick and tubular
peyote. Some experience using a round nose pliers and wire to make loops.
VERY SHORT SEXY DESCRIPTION: (1-2 sentences; should mention primary technique)
Adapt the beauty and craftsmanship of the classical world to contemporary style! Learn to apply
contemporary principles of design, using Peyote Stitch, Brick Stitch and simple Wire Working, to create
and arrange Butterfly Bracelet components.
SHORT DESCRIPTION: (25-50 words)
What does it mean to “Contemporize” a traditional piece of jewelry? How do we begin to apply beadweaving techniques toward this end? How do you break down the elements of the traditional piece, in
order to better understand it? What path must the designer’s narrative take as the piece is
constructed? How does “Contemporizing” differ from “Vintage Revival”? In this workshop, we discuss
theories, strategies and their applications toward contemporizing an Etruscan Butterfly necklace. We
use brick stitch, peyote stitch and simple wire working to create a set of bracelet components. We play
with arranging these components into a contemporized piece.
This WORKSHOP is divided into 3 discussions:
1. Contemporizing Traditional Jewelry Through The Management of Design Elements
2. Working with Components, Forms and Themes
3. Arranging Components and Managing The Transitions From Component To Component Within A
Piece Of Jewelry
We will be making 4 components, as a way of helping us illustrate the more theoretical points, and
stimulate further discussion. These include,
A. A brick-stitched butterfly
B. A peyote-stitch-bezeled cabochon
C & D. Figure 8 and Cloverleaf wire-wrapped components
