Unit Description: The history of the ancient world is filled with the rise and fall of civilizations.
While some fell into obscurity, others continue to influence today's world. The civilization of
ancient Greece had an enormous impact not only on the ancient world but also on the medieval and
modern worlds. One of its most lasting contributions is the organized system of thought called
philosophy. The Greed word for philosophy means "love of wisdom." As the Greek philosopher
Socrates puts it (in one of the Dialogues of his pupil Plato), "The unexamined life is not worth
living."
Guiding Questions:
Students should be able to answer the following questions before the exam:
