( “light” = discovery, science) Walton -- the captain of a ship headed on a dangerous voyage to the North Pole. He tells his sister of the preparations for the voyage and of his strong desire to accomplish “some great purpose”—discovering a northern passage to the Pacific, revealing the source of the Earth’s magnetism, or simply setting foot on undiscovered territory. Letters 2 & 3: Another letter from Walton to his sister, 3 months later, and 4 months later Archangel, Russia Walton complains about his lack of friends. Feels – lonely, isolated – and too educated/sophisticated to find a sensitive shipmate with whom to share his dreams. He is a true a Romantic, with his “love for the marvelous, a belief in the marvelous,” his thirst for discovery, which pushes him along the lonely path he has chosen. In the brief third letter, Walton tells his sister that his ship has set sail and that he expects that he will achieve his aim.
