Day 1: Letters, Chapters 1, 2, 3
Walton tells his story to his sister: “I” = Robert Walton in this section.
Letter 1: A letter from Robert Walton to his sister, Mrs. Margaret Saville
St. Petersburg, Russia
Summary: Letter 1
What may not be expected in a country of eternal light? ( “light” = discovery, science)
 Walton -- the captain of a ship headed on a dangerous voyage to the North Pole.
 He tells his sister of the preparations for the voyage and of his strong desire to accomplish “some
great purpose”—discovering a northern passage to the Pacific, revealing the source of the Earth’s
magnetism, or simply setting foot on undiscovered territory.
Letters 2 & 3: Another letter from Walton to his sister, 3 months later, and 4 months later
Archangel, Russia


Walton complains about his lack of friends.
Feels
– lonely, isolated
– and too educated/sophisticated to find a sensitive shipmate with whom to share his dreams.
He is a true a Romantic, with his “love for the marvelous, a belief in the marvelous,” his thirst for discovery,
which pushes him along the lonely path he has chosen. In the brief third letter, Walton tells his sister that
his ship has set sail and that he expects that he will achieve his aim.
Letter 4: Another letter from Walton to his sister, 1 month later
North Pole







The ship stalls
The crew spots a sled on the ice driven by a gigantic creature.
Later, they encounter another sled stranded on the ice, with all but one of the sled dogs is dead,
and the man on the sled — not the man seen the night before — weak and starving.
The man refuses help until Walton tells him that it is heading north. The stranger recovers for two
days before he can speak.
Walton prevents his men from pestering the stranger with questions.
Walton and the stranger eventually become friendly, and the stranger tells Walton his story.
At the end of the fourth letter, Walton states that the visitor will begin his story the next day.
Walton’s letter’s – the framing narrative – ends and the stranger’s story begins.
