Offshore and Marine Industry
The Offshore and Marine Industry has seen stellar growth in
recent years. This industry is expected to continue growing
in size over the coming years as it increases its market
share [currently holding 60% of world market share in
Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO)
conversion and 70% in jack-up rigs] in the design and
fabrication of offshore rigs, semi-submersibles, other marine
structures and oil-field equipment.
Key players of this Industry (such as Keppel and
SembCorp) and EDB have expressed to CORE the urgent
need for a strong research and manpower training
programme. In response, CORE will be launching an
offshore engineering specialization, beginning in
AY2004/2005.

Demand for Offshore and Marine
Engineers
An EDB senior officer estimated that the Offshore
and Marine Industry would need about 30-35
engineers per year, and this number is expected to
increase in the coming years as the oil and gas
industry grow further.

Objective of Offshore Engineering Specialization
To empower a selected group (about 20 students per
batch) of CE graduates with key skills and knowledge
in offshore structures, hydrodynamics, seafloor
engineering, control and even chemical processes so
that they can join the Offshore and Marine Industry.

Some Changes to CE curriculum
Injection of some elements of offshore and marine
engineering into a good number of existing CE modules so
as to make students familiar with the offshore engineering
discipline.
For example,
• design a tutorial problem on undersea cables in EG1109 Statics
and Mechanics of Materials
• give assignments on analysis and design of offshore structural
components in Structural Analysis and Design, Finite Element
Method, Plated Structures modules
• highlight construction materials that are suitable for use in
offshore and coastal structures when teaching CE materials to
students

Requirements of Offshore Engineering
Specialization
CE students wishing to opt for this specialization must take
• CE4103 Design Project (on Offshore Structures)
• CE4104 B.Eng. Dissertation (on topics such as jack-up platforms,
FPSOs, very large floating pontoon structures, semi-submersibles,
seafloor engineering, and environmental impact )
• CE5703 Analysis and Design of Offshore Structures
• CE5307 Offshore Hydrodynamics (new) – surface waves theory,
wave forces on bodies, stability of offshore structures under various
wave and flow conditions
• EG1602 Vacation Internship Programme with an offshore and
marine engineering company/institute (12 weeks)

Specialization
and students are encouraged to read
• CN4243 Oil Field Processing (new) – separation processes,
dehydration, sweetening, fractionation, effluent treatment
• CE5308 Coastal Engineering and Sediment Transport (new)
– coastal wave dynamics, sediment transport, design of coastal
structures
• ME3242 Industrial Automation

Future Plans
CORE plans to mount more elective modules such as
• Fatigue and Fracture of Offshore Structures
• Offshore Dynamics and Marine Operations
Also in a few years’ time, CORE intends to offer a Masters’
programme on offshore engineering for graduates who
wish to build their careers in Offshore and Marine
Engineering and for engineers in the Shipbuilding and
Offshore Industry to upgrade their knowledge and research
abilities.
